S-Clarke Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Might as well start it early... Tough game this will be...one of those cramped intimidating grounds that we have struggled at so much in recent seasons. Listening to Pard's preview on Saints player, he's got an almost full squad to choose from. Morgan, Thomas and Lallana are back in the squad and ready to play and i assume Connolly will be involved in some capacity too. On southend's front...their main man (Lee Barnard) who has 10 goals this year is fighting to be fit and looks v doubtfull, along with their best defender Mvoto who's on loan from Sunderland. Pard's preview... http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10280~1821270,00.html
St Marco Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Remember going there in 2006 i think and getting beat 2-1. Then we kicked their ass 4-1 on the return leg. A very intimidating old traditional stadium. If the players are serious about getting out of the drop zone before xmas then they will have to adjust to playing at places like this, fast, and winning them. They are no mugs, lost only 1 game at home all season. It will be tough. But they have lost 3 of their past 4 games so now is a good time to play them. I expect a win here, our squad on paper at least is far better then their's. The lads will have to fight for every ball. I think we will win this one 1-3
wightman35 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Barnard and Mvoto's being doubtful is probably a bit of spin to lull the opposition. Expect them to play! I won't, however, complain if they fail the fitness test. Provided our first choice central defenders are up for it, all will be well.
Colinjb Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 We like the Southend fans, right? Right. Now, do they like us?
S-Clarke Posted 8 October, 2009 Author Posted 8 October, 2009 Right. Now, do they like us? They love us - i remember they bought spongebob (i think?) to the game in the champ. also remember that Southend love-in after our last game in the playoff season? That was slightly cringe-worthy though tbf.
Colinjb Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 They love us - i remember they bought spongebob (i think?) to the game in the champ. also remember that Southend love-in after our last game in the playoff season? Ponty Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 They love us - i remember they bought spongebob (i think?) to the game in the champ. also remember that Southend love-in after our last game in the playoff season? That was slightly cringe-worthy though tbf. Oh, I dunno. Remembering that is better than fondly reminiscing about Stanley knives and half-bricks on Milton Road, like some seem to do.
jawillwill Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I hope Spongebob's there this time round. He was fantastic. Really made my day on an otherwise boring afternoon when we thrashed them to scrape into the play-offs.
dubai_phil Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I just think the karma is ALL wrong. You simply CANNOT have a match clashing with Rock Bottom's legendary Karaoke Night which even attracts former Saints Legends - (See Superstar Budgie in Action in Avatar) Such a tough choice, have run out of Magners, and London Pride and only Tsing Tao left (a nice beer on it's own) but not for footie. Really tough to call, bad karma or DP singing bad karma chameleon. Think it will be late fitness test after lunch, on form and stuff we should win this nicely but not easily, just hmmmmmmmmm
Legod Third Coming Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I hope Spongebob's there this time round. He was fantastic. Really made my day on an otherwise boring afternoon when we thrashed them to scrape into the play-offs. The pink thing was better tbh.

Draino76 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 BTW I can go! I need 2 tickets. Can anyone help?
Draino76 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Also, Southend main striker is out. L2 top scorer if I heard correctly.
Arizona Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 As for the football, I'd go with: Davis James Jaidi Trottman Harding Waigo Lallana Hammond Mills Lambert Connolly
dubai_phil Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 ------Davis------ James--Jaidi--Trottman--Harding -------Wotton-- Hammond------ Waigo--------------------Mills ----------Lallana---------- ---------Lambert--------- I'd prefer Holmes out wide but if he was down to play why wasn't he in the squad on Tuesday. Won't see 4-4-2 IMHO at the start of a game until we get Connolly fit - 3 or 4 weeks I guess Yes Wotton sounded pants on Tuesday but with this formation he allows Hammond to play more so until Mellis is back he's in as Gillett ain't got it at the moment
timebomb Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 They are not expecting to win according to their forum. S-Clarke Posted 8 October, 2009 Author Posted 8 October, 2009 What's up with Mellis? Eng. U19 duty i think shame we have to split the attack up after the gills game
glkdcdes Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Tempted to go. Can we buy on the gate? we returned 200 tickets so should be enough. im buying tickets on the night and have been assured by there ticket office that there will be tickets left.
saint_stevo Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Dougie Freedman is that? He is bound to score
Draino76 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Dougie Freedman is that? He is bound to score Southend chaps at work say he is out.
Draino76 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 we returned 200 tickets so should be enough. im buying tickets on the night and have been assured by there ticket office that there will be tickets left. cool
Genk Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 we returned 200 tickets so should be enough. im buying tickets on the night and have been assured by there ticket office that there will be tickets left. So we have only sold roughly 800? That's quite poor
saint_stevo Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Southend chaps at work say he is out. O'Donovan will score then, as he was linked with us.........
RonManager Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 So we have only sold roughly 800? That's quite poor That's the Friday night 'can't get home effect'. We'd take masses more if it was a Saturday game.
saint_stevo Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 how far to southend? How much are tickets? crutch friendly stadium? wanna give me a lift?
RedAndWhite91 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 how far to southend? How much are tickets? crutch friendly stadium? wanna give me a lift? 101 miles as the crow flies. £20 for an adult. The club caters for disabled supporters, not sure about away fans on crutches though. No, I'm getting the train. HTH.
Stubby Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 ------Davis------ James--Jaidi--Trottman--Harding -------Wotton-- Hammond------ Waigo--------------------Mills ----------Lallana---------- ---------Lambert--------- I'd prefer Holmes out wide but if he was down to play why wasn't he in the squad on Tuesday. If he's fit, I'd rather have Holmes at LM.
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Word of warning from East Anglia...it is going to pee it down from about 3pm onwards, bring your rain coats and hope that the pitch at Roots Hall holds up.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 As for the football, I'd go with: Davis James Jaidi Trottman Harding Waigo Lallana Hammond Mills Lambert Connolly That side looks Vgood to me! AP however played 1 up front at home to Torquay so cant see him playing with 4 attacking (Lambert, Connolly, Waigo Lallana) players in the starting 11 away?
S-Clarke Posted 9 October, 2009 Author Posted 9 October, 2009 Barnard and Mvoto's being doubtful is probably a bit of spin to lull the opposition. Expect them to play! But Mvoto isn't as he's gone back to sunderland for treatment - and according to their fans, they're screwed without him...
sussexsaint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 That side looks Vgood to me! AP however played 1 up front at home to Torquay so cant see him playing with 4 attacking (Lambert, Connolly, Waigo Lallana) players in the starting 11 away? See I disagree we have a strong attacking force now and a very decent back 4 and a keeper we should go at teams and try and pummel them
landford.saint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 RE.. Tickets for tonight... Just ordered 2 over phone for collection there... so must be some left...
Draino76 Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 RE.. Tickets for tonight... Just ordered 2 over phone for collection there... so must be some left... Me too. Plenty about.
sussexsaint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 So , sorry to ask again but 7.45 on a Friday - why?????
landford.saint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 So , sorry to ask again but 7.45 on a Friday - why????? Police request ... Dont know why .... Its not as if we are Leeds or Cardiff.
The Godfather Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 So , sorry to ask again but 7.45 on a Friday - why????? Local police moved it as soon as the fixtures came out.
Saint_clark Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 That side looks Vgood to me! AP however played 1 up front at home to Torquay so cant see him playing with 4 attacking (Lambert, Connolly, Waigo Lallana) players in the starting 11 away? But in that 4-5-1 there was 3 attacking players anyway. In the 4-5-1 at home to Gillingham there was Lambert, Lallana, Mellis and Waigo.
up and away Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 ------Davis------ James--Jaidi--Trottman--Harding -------Wotton-- Hammond------ Waigo--------------------Mills ----------Lallana---------- ---------Lambert--------- I'd prefer Holmes out wide but if he was down to play why wasn't he in the squad on Tuesday. But it really is not as complicated as everyone makes out, we simply have 5 in midfield when defending and subsequently circumstance and players preferences then come to the fore when attacking. Most of our players are struggling to put in an effective corner, so to believe the playing positions they end up in after a "to and fro" is completely deliberate is a little unrealistic. When 4 in midfield is good enough to boss the opposition I imagine that will be the time we stick with 2 up front, either by design or fault. I have been impressed with Pardew of late in that by having 5 in midfield when defending has gone a way to plugging those holes we previously have seen. The big trick being able to maintain a very effective attacking option to compliment it. Agree about Holmes as previously his tracking back really helped shore up the left side, while still delivering an attacking threat. Wooton will always cost us if put to the test, but he can be effective when others nullify his weaknesses. I am not sure Gillet will ever get it, in the position he has been asked to play, but he should have done enough by now to show he has a place somewhere.
Nick65 Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Getting the train from Liverpool Street to Prittlewell (nearest station apparently) - anyone know of any decent pubs round there ? Cheers
torsaint Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Thomas at RB. James in MF with Hammond. Connolly for second half. But what do I know!
Scummer Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 So , sorry to ask again but 7.45 on a Friday - why????? They play loads of their home games on Friday nights.
saintbenny Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Where is Holmes??If not injured and in the frame I can't understand why he did not get a run out on Tuesday...unless of course he was being saved for tonight?? My only concern with signing DC is that Adam L will now have to revert back to the midfield having come alive over the last couple of games playing ust off lambert. He is clearly not a winger and does he have the discipline to play as the attcking central midfielder??
Alanh Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 My only concern with signing DC is that Adam L will now have to revert back to the midfield having come alive over the last couple of games playing ust off lambert. He is clearly not a winger and does he have the discipline to play as the attcking central midfielder?? I think you just need to look at the signing of DC as an improvement to the squad and we will probable see a striker shipped out once he has proved his fitness as a result, possibly Saga. At the moment we can only really play Lambert up front from the start of a match as none of our other strikers are up to partnering him at the moment. That pretty much forces us into a 4-3-3 / 4-5-1 formationso the addition of DC (when he gets fit enough) will give us another option - to go 4-4-2 either from the start or to change the shape of a match. AL is pretty versatile and can play on either flank or through the middle so I only see DC as strengthening our squad overall.
