Saint_John Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 I know i'm going to upset a few but I don't think his fitness will return to the levels that Nigel requires. IMO he should have retired/left last summer. He has started five games this season and as a team we have failed to score in any of them, and didn't look like scoring for long periods Plymouth 0-1 Swindon JPT 0-3 Rochdale 0-2 Swindon 0-1 and NA 1st game MK Dons 0-2.
beatlesaint Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 Apart from the first goal at Oldham and the long range goal he scored at St.Marys he has done nothing. Ridiculous statement.
Ekelund24 Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 "Best player in the squad by far", I don't think so. Lallana is miles better than Connolly has ever been. Not convinced of that, Lallana is a great player but Connolly was a goal machine in the early 00s, albeit mostly in the Championship!!! Plus he was selected in the Eire World Cup squad in 2002 I think he played 10 mins but that is more than Theo got in 2006!! I will change it from "Best Player" in the squad to "Best Footballing Brain" his movement is superb and his vision is superior to everyone else in the squad, other players are more skillful but he is the best link player we have
Smirking_Saint Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 Yes, but he is arguably our best striker, if only he didn't spend so much time in the treatment room. The midfield just had absolutely nothing to play the ball to. As for the fact he was picked for a world cup squad in 2002, what a rediculous statement, you do realise its now 2011 ???
Saint Fan CaM Posted 21 March, 2011 Posted 21 March, 2011 Not really judging here, but surely if Connelly was anything special now he would get picked. He's not even making the bench when we have few strike options.

Matthew Le God Posted 22 March, 2011 Posted 22 March, 2011 It may have escaped your notice but, yet again, he is injured! It may have escaped your notice, but he has been back in training for while now and you can see him training in the last few match build up videos.
Saint_clark Posted 22 March, 2011 Posted 22 March, 2011 Was perfect for us in a season of rebuilding. Can still perform at this level for lower clubs so we should just let him move on at the end of this season.
NickG Posted 22 March, 2011 Posted 22 March, 2011 think last upate was training but not fully recovered, nearly there.

I do realise that is 2011 but the original point was that Lallana is better than Connolly ever was, and I was pointing out that he played in the World Cup which is a pretty big achievement for a player albeit 9 years ago. He also scored a ridiculous amount of goals for Wimbledon in the Championship and has played for a few teams in the Prem as well, which I am sure Lallana will do for us in the future The point is that he is never going to be 100% and hasn't been since he joined if he was he would be still playing at a higher level than League 1. Watch the goals from Walsall away last year and Norwich at home and see how well he links up play. This year he hasn't played as well as he can but when he played in the season every player was **** due to poor management, last year I think he played a part in 23 games and we won 15 which is pretty impressive. He is a lot better player than you see but everyone has opinions on players, I don't really rate Gobern and think this is his level, but thought that Tefler did a good job!!
madruss Posted 22 March, 2011 Posted 22 March, 2011 Anyone else think they might be delaying Connolly's return to the squad until after Barney's court appearance? If Barney does get sent down, DC would be a useful option to bring off the bench
SFC Forever Posted 22 March, 2011 Posted 22 March, 2011 No I don't think like that. We should have let him go last summer and brought a replacement in.

Connelly for me is similar in style (before anyone takes me to task to daring to compare the two) to SKP. his movement, awareness, control and passing are exceptional (for this level) plus he's a niggly little fooker. If he was fully fit he'd be starting alongside Lambert in every game FACT, it's only his injuries that have apparently held him back this season and I hope he can play an important part, even as a cameo, in the last few games. Oh and I really rated Telfer as well, both as a player and a person.
Saint_clark Posted 22 March, 2011 Posted 22 March, 2011 It's not a fact that Connolly would be starting every game if fit at all. He is a good player for this level but he is not as good as people like to make out.
SaintNeil90 Posted 22 March, 2011 Posted 22 March, 2011 You didn't go to Walsall away last year did you? He was the best player on the park and has been in most of the games he has played in, if he wasn't injured, before we signed him he would be playing at a much higher level, lower prem team probably. If he got 100% fit tomorrow he would be the best player in the squad by far Actually I did but I cant remember it He would not be the best player at all, he is too old. Lallana is a far better player.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 22 March, 2011 Posted 22 March, 2011 It may have escaped your notice but, yet again, he is injured! It may have escaped your notice, but your foot is in your mouth!
Chez Posted 22 March, 2011 Posted 22 March, 2011 he's very dent at this level, but it took him quite a lot of matches to get match fit and effective last season, I'd say about seven, so even if he returns to the first team squad we won't see him back to his best as he won't get games to get his sharpness back. In the end it was a gamble in the summer by Pardew that has not paid off for us.

Actually he scored 6 goals in his first 8 appearances (including a quality finish in his debut) so if it took him a while to get match fit i'd rather he stayed unfit.
SFC Chris Posted 23 March, 2011 Posted 23 March, 2011 Anyone else think they might be delaying Connolly's return to the squad until after Barney's court appearance? When is his court appearance? Much chance of him going down... surely not?
Lord Duckhunter Posted 23 March, 2011 Posted 23 March, 2011 Not much chance and certainly not before the end of the season.
