2nd January - updates ×

Come the end of the January window I feel certain that we will have a bloody good idea of next seasons title winning side. Maybe one or two additions after the season ends to wrap it all up big time.

Indeed! He ticks all the right boxes when it comes to signing injured legends. High time we changed the name of Staplewood to Degadowood in honour of all past groin injury signings.

I'm slightly surprised at the overiding joy at the signing of an extremely injury prone 32+ striker that hasn't played for two years. I hope he can still cut the mustard, but I think I'll reign in my excitement for now. Best of luck David, if you find your range quickly the fans will back you for a long long time after.

Great signing! I expressed my first doubts about Pardew when we lost to Bristol but he's made some great transfer moves and I believe the results will come.

I still think we will stick to our 4-2-3-1 type formation for the majority of games with Connolly coming off the bench. It's been clear since Swindon away that Pardew wants us playing in that way and I don't think this signing will change much.

I'm glad we've signed a proven goal scorer but I can't see one of our midfielders dropping out for him regularly.

Hopefully this will give Saga a kick up the arse, well hopefully he will go on loan he hasn't done anything for ages.

I was the same but according to the OS he has been training with us for almost a month now and has looked in great shape.

Could be good if he stays fit. As posted earlier if we can get Voltz on a free as well and another midfielder we are in good shape for promotion this year.

Can't believe he is only 26! And still unattached. Have we been directly linked to him or is this just wishful thinking?

Potentially a very good signing, if he can stay fit & has the desire to get back to his best then as AP says could be one of the bargains of the season. So welcome David lets hope it all goes well for you & Saints.

As multiple accounts are against the forum rules I wouldn't complain too much.

Cheers Ponty, good job I finally found which old email address I set this account up with!

If he was anywhere near full fitness or about to be soon, there would be a host of CCC clubs knocking his door down. It's a gamble which I can fully understand, because if he does not get fit we will still be developing the younger players. If the gamble come off we really have hit it big:).

four pages of comments and not a single negative one about him or saints

this one isn't negative towards him or saints but doesn't paint a wonderful picture either. I'm not saying he won't do a job for us though...

"TBF go back a 6/7 months and Connolly was getting dogs abuse on here and people were saying we should pay off his contract, injured or not etc and there was loads of venom towards him when things weren't going so well.

Despite not many people realising around that time he was somewhere in Holland desperately trying to prove his fitness to a club.

I think since then a few may have cottoned onto the fact injuries have probably ruined him and he's been lucky to get a club after failing a trial at QPR among other places."

I wish I could but I cant, I was only there for two bloody days!

Btw I can now reveal my source, Puli* - have a guess

So not only is Anthony Pulis a dodgy footballer, he's a pretty bad source of information too judging by what you told us.

.and what makes it even MORE intersting IMHO is that we have a new strategy when it comes to the PR side of things.

Before it was always ..

The Sun or NOTW , or Sky tips that we are interested in player X

Rumours of club secret meetings with X (and his agent)

Pix.of X coming to SMS

X is discussing terms with the club.......a fee is rumoured.

X signs together with pux of him with number ...

...it was all a bit predictable and uncertain upto the end.

BUT NOW .suddenly a good signing (Connelly,) and he's been secretly training with us for 3 weeks. ........and it's stayed secret no ITK threads.

Great begosh and begorrah (!) another class international striker .

It gives it all more thrill and excitement. It may not be in the same class as the Keegan signing, but adds a lot of flavour

of secrecy and surprise to everything . well done AP!

This bit in the artical on the OS made me cringe:

"MK Dons (formerly Wimbledon)"

Isn't that because when he played for them they WERE Wimbledon, and some retards might check his record and go "hang on a minute....."

Fantastic signing, but not quite good enough for the usual forum mongs. It might be worth remembering that we are in League 1 for a reason, and that signing a player of Conolly's pedigree is a major coup for a league 1 club. We are definatley moving in the right direction. Well done Alan Pardew.

Indeed, you only have to look at other league one fans reactions to know that he is a brilliant signing.

what reaction have you seen?

I cant get too excited about this signing. Players never seem to come back well after long term injuries (Killer being a prime example) although I'm sure someone will quote the complete opposite.

Hope to be proved wrong but I'm not pinning my hopes on this one...just yet!

Does anyone actually know what is wrong with Connolly?

I thought he was supposed to be "back in training" a few weeks ago?

He is, has been in the videos on the OS. Just not been picked yet for the squad. Doubt he will be unless anyone gets injured, Lambert, barnard, Guly and Forte are ahead of him.

Yeah, but what a back-up (potentially, if he can stay fit for 3 or 4 games)...

Totally, can only be a good thing, even if he has an impact in 1 or 2 games.

Apart from the first goal at Oldham and the long range goal he scored at St.Marys he has done nothing.

You didn't go to Walsall away last year did you? He was the best player on the park and has been in most of the games he has played in, if he wasn't injured, before we signed him he would be playing at a much higher level, lower prem team probably. If he got 100% fit tomorrow he would be the best player in the squad by far

Yes, but he is arguably our best striker, if only he didn't spend so much time in the treatment room.
