Weston Saint Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 -----------------------------Taylor (Birmingham)-------------------------------- Delap (Stoke) -----------Baird (Fulham)----------Higginbotham (Stoke)-----Bridge(Man City) Walcott (Arsenal)------------Quashie (West Ham)----------- Bale (Tottenham)-------- Surman (Wolves) -----------------Jones (Sunderland)--------------Crouch (Spurs)------------------------
Matthew Le God Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Swapping Bale and Surman would make more sense.
Andy_Porter Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Would get relegated. Would beat a few teams every now and then but any 4-5-1 side would destroy them. No height in defence, no power through the middle and no presence at all. Would be ok going forward but that would be about it. Taylor Baird - Higgingbotham - Williamson - Bridge Theo - Delap - Surman - Quashie - Bale Crouch Might be a bit better like that, still doubt they would stay up, lack a proper centre back in there really.
Weston Saint Posted 8 October, 2009 Author Posted 8 October, 2009 Have to admit I think my team would struggle to stay out of the bottom three.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Have to admit I think my team would struggle to stay out of the bottom three. Then draft in Kevin Davies and James Beattie?
krissyboy31 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Then draft in Kevin Davies and James Beattie? and Kevin Phillips off the bench, when they need a goal in the last 10 minutes.

once_bitterne Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 What a bad move it was bringing in Paul Jones when we had Maik Taylor! Jones is long since retired and Taylor is still plying his trade in the Prem!
Pancake Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 What a bad move it was bringing in Paul Jones when we had Maik Taylor! Jones is long since retired and Taylor is still plying his trade in the Prem! Surely a good move, as without PJ between the stick we would not have moved for Niemi when we did...
once_bitterne Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Surely a good move, as without PJ between the stick we would not have moved for Niemi when we did... How many years of Jones did we have to endure to get to Niemi tho! In any case, he might have been a better keeper than Taylor but he was far more injury prone! I don't think we would have done much worse in the WGS era if we had Taylor in goal.
Andy_Porter Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Who's Williamson? He's the centre half playing for Pompey, played a handfull of games for us before we released him. Was struggling to think of another ex Saints centre back in the prem. Maybe Andrew Davies if he's still alive.
once_bitterne Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 How can any team exclude Beattie? One that has Crouch and Jones? On current form I would struggle to pick BT over those two.
Weston Saint Posted 8 October, 2009 Author Posted 8 October, 2009 Then draft in Kevin Davies and James Beattie? Thought about Beattie but we already have Jones & Crouch who I would put ahead of him. Likewise Kevin Davies. We had Davenport on loan for a while and he could go into the central back. Better now that he was then but I have tried to limit it to players with Saints on full contracts.

Lowe did well to get our money back on him. A good player but always injured.
The9 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 -----------------------------Taylor (Birmingham)-------------------------------- Delap (Stoke) -----------Baird (Fulham)----------Higginbotham (Stoke)-----Bridge(Man City) Walcott (Arsenal)------------Quashie (West Ham)----------- Bale (Tottenham)-------- Surman (Wolves) -----------------Jones (Sunderland)--------------Crouch (Spurs)------------------------ I think I'd be swapping Bale and Surman for a start. Then Get Delap in the middle instead of Surman, Baird to right back and Andrew Davies alongside Higgi. Or play 4-2-4 and chuck Beattie and Phillips in there instead of Surman and Quashie.

rallyboy Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I reckon Theo might ask for a move after two games, and looking at that defence, if Phillips is coming off the bench it will be when we need four goals in the last ten minutes.
Weston Saint Posted 8 October, 2009 Author Posted 8 October, 2009 He's on loan at Sheff Utd.Right thanks, so he does not qualify at present.
VectisSaint Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Thought about Beattie but we already have Jones & Crouch who I would put ahead of him. Likewise Kevin Davies. We had Davenport on loan for a while and he could go into the central back. Better now that he was then but I have tried to limit it to players with Saints on full contracts. Thought Davenport was seriously injured in a knife attack by his sister's boyfriend. A team that includes Quashie will get relegated...
Weston Saint Posted 8 October, 2009 Author Posted 8 October, 2009 Thought Davenport was seriously injured in a knife attack by his sister's boyfriend. Genk Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Does Baird even get a game at Fulham? Get him back here on loan!
The9 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Does Baird even get a game at Fulham? Get him back here on loan! Came on as a sub last week, I happened to notice on MotD2 on Sunday. He'll get a few more cameos for as long as they're in Europe.

beatlesaint Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Defence is too weak and central midfield isnt the greatest. We would go down
Weston Saint Posted 8 October, 2009 Author Posted 8 October, 2009 not sure of the critera for your selectionThey have to be a present part of a Premier first team squad and have previously played for Saints under contract (not loan contracts)
sandwichsaint Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Taylor Baird Beattie(!) Higgy Bridge Surman Delap Bale Crouch Walcott KJ Would beat the team at the top of the page 'We're gonna win 4-3, we're gonna win 4-3 .........'
L1Minus10 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Taylor, Delap Baird Higginbotham Bridge ---Quashie --------Bale -----------Walcott ----Jones -Crouch -Beattie ****ing go for it.... 4-2-4
Cabrone Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 That team might just avoid relegation but it would have to score quite a lot as the defence and midfield look fairly porous. I'd also get BT up front and put Jones just behind the front two.
RinNY Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I think what that ex-Saints team really shows is how unnecessary relegation really was! When you consider that at that time Niemi, Lundekvam, and Dodd were still playing, there's no obvious reason why we shouldn't have been able to compete. Baird, Higgy, Delap, Qhashie, Crouch, Beattie, Philips have all shown they're Prem quality players, and with Jones and Walcott up and coming and Oakley recovering from injury, we had a squad that should have been quite capable of keeping us in the Prem, and I still don't see why they didn't, other than crap managers after WGS left, and poor morale.
krissyboy31 Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 Taylor Baird Beattie(!) Higgy Bridge Surman Delap Bale Crouch Walcott KJ Would beat the team at the top of the page 'We're gonna win 4-3, we're gonna win 4-3 .........' Beatts at CB??!! If one of the strikers were to go back into the back 4 it would be Jones because that is where he started his career.

Give me a in form Beattie over an in form Jones anyday. Remember that year when he was top English scorer in the Prem just after Van Nie;storoy and Henry!

Mouldy Coat Posted 9 October, 2009 Posted 9 October, 2009 very weak defence other than Bridge, Higgy might be ok, but only ok.
John Cool Posted 6 March, 2010 Posted 6 March, 2010 My attempt at an ex-Saints team with (mostly) current Premier League players .. Ex-Saints XI GK - Paul Smith (Nottm Forest) LB - Wayne Bridge (Man City) CB - Fitz Hall (QPR) CB - Danny Higginbotham (Stoke) RB - Chris Baird (Fulham) LM - Gareth Bale (Tottenham) CM - Andrew Surman (Wolves) CM - Rory Delap (Stoke) RM - Theo Walcott (Arsenal) AT - Peter Crouch (Tottenham) AT - Scott MacDonald (Celtic) Subs: Kevin Davies (Bolton) James Beattie (Stoke) Kevin Phillips (Birmingham) Ricardo Fuller (Stoke) Kenwyne Jones (Sunderland) Rudi Skacel (Larissa) Maik Taylor (Birmingham)

Dazza82 Posted 6 March, 2010 Posted 6 March, 2010 He's the centre half playing for Pompey, played a handfull of games for us before we released him. Mike Williamson now plays for Newcastle
madsent Posted 6 March, 2010 Posted 6 March, 2010 Does Baird even get a game at Fulham? Get him back here on loan! Came on as a sub last week, I happened to notice on MotD2 on Sunday. He'll get a few more cameos for as long as they're in Europe. He's played in 38 of Fulham's 45 games this season. The times I've seen him on TV, whether he's played right-back, left-back or midfield, he's been tidy and done his job. Roy Hodgson certainly seems to have changed his mind on Baird.
VectisSaint Posted 6 March, 2010 Posted 6 March, 2010 Any team that includes Quashie would get relegated, he is utter crap. That's probably why he does not play in the Premier League and therefore would not qualify for your team anyway. He is currently doing his best to shaft QPR. I imagine Warnock will suss him quickly and move him on asap.
Ludwig Posted 6 March, 2010 Posted 6 March, 2010 That side would struggle, poor defence, weak midfield.
Thedelldays Posted 6 March, 2010 Posted 6 March, 2010 Does Baird even get a game at Fulham? Get him back here on loan! yes..he generally plays RB quite a bit...in a team that are fantastic at the mo
