Pilchards Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 What has been the best away atmosphere you have witnessed? Im not talking about our own fans but the home team. I remember going to Manchester Utd and Liverpool thinking it was going to be amazing but they was so quiet during the game. My best are two teams, Newcastle United when we lost 2-0 about 15 years ago (Gazza was playing) when the Toons attacked the fans would all stand up like it was a mexican wave as the ball went forward, and when they scored it was so deafening as I have never heard U N I T E D get sung as if it was a echo from left to right. Also I will mention Pompey away in a league game as everyone of there fans was up for it (like us in the home games) As an away fan in that ****hole it does not help when the wind blows in your face with no roof cover either. What's your best away atmosphere and Im not talking a neutral ground like a semi final at villa park or Cardiff etc.
70's Mike Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Do not want to par take in a debate where the subject matter gives me pain
Red Alert Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I remember a night game at Coventry 2/3 years ago. Burley was in charge think we lost 2-1 if memory serves. Anyway, the cov fans that night were fantastic, really loud and didnt let us get into many songs at all.

Baj Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 West Ham away, 2001, hammers fans calling for the board to be sacked, we played **** all night, WH peppered our goal but couldnt score, 10 mins from the end, a quick break, Ormerod cross, Beattie stroked it in and the away end erupted. West Ham carried on singing sack the board, saints fans joined in. So funny.

As Coventry's always has been.
Hatch Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Man Utd was good pre-seating days. Liverpool is over hyped. Highbury was not called the Library for nothing
RonManager Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Stood in the middle of the Anfield Kop back in the 70s and had to cheer when they scored!! I'd aroused suspicion by nearly going mad when Tom Jenkins hit the bar.
Saint J 77 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Reading away last season seemed good.. but maybe thats because we won?
saints_is_the_south Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 West Ham away, 2001, hammers fans calling for the board to be sacked, we played **** all night, WH peppered our goal but couldnt score, 10 mins from the end, a quick break, Ormerod cross, Beattie stroked it in and the away end erupted. West Ham carried on singing sack the board, saints fans joined in. So funny. That was in the cup final season so 2002. In all the times I've been following Saints away i fail to remember a home support which really stand out. The only one that does come to mind is the Derby fans in the play off semi, we outsung them all game but when they did sing they were pretty loud.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Highbury was not called the Library for nothing Listen to any football talk show on the radio and their fans are always on there, really vocal. Go to a game at Highbury and they were scared to make a noise!
Andy_Porter Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I remember a night game at Coventry 2/3 years ago. Burley was in charge think we lost 2-1 if memory serves. Anyway, the cov fans that night were fantastic, really loud and didnt let us get into many songs at all. Was that their first game at the Ricoh? Was an ok atmosphere but only really one song.
Chez Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 the home fan support varies so much depending on how the game goes. If the home side is winning easily, as is so often the case against us over the last 20 years, then they be can really loud, but if we are on top, they more often than not go quiet, very quiet at places like Boro. I find that when we are the giant being killed in a cup game that is when home fans really suck the ball into the back of the net and goals against almost feel inevitable. One final thing, the big sides always saw us as small fry so no surprise that they weren't as up for the game as say our local rivals were.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Carlise 2 weeks back - home fans were so loud and sung there little hearts out 10/10!
ladysaint Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Stoke City away. When they sing Delilah they sound really good. WBA when they score and their boing boinging is quite effective.
saints_is_the_south Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Carlise 2 weeks back - home fans were so loud and sung there little hearts out 10/10! You are being sarcastic i assume!
SNOWY Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 The Steaua fans were impressive. That match also wins prizes for "cheapest beer" & the "wettest" game.
Saints foreva Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I was impressed with the Swansea fans last season when I went there.
SO16_Saint Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 WORST home support has to go to Aston Villa. Tryly truly awful support.
krissyboy31 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 WORST home support has to go to Aston Villa. Tryly truly awful support. Not back in the '80's and the Holte end was terracing it wasn't!
Pat from Poole Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 The Steaua fans were impressive. That match also wins prizes for "cheapest beer" & the "wettest" game. Ah yes of course, I stupidly forgot about Steaua fans. They showed that you can make a deafening racket without a roof and also whilst getting wet. They were something else. There was a stunning female local copper in the away end as well. I can't do a Rule 1 unfortunately though.
krissyboy31 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Olympique Marseille. That was a good (cough) atmosphere.
londonsaint1604 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I thought the Sheffield Wednesday fans were good at Hillsborough last season. Charlton are the worst I've ever seen.
The Fat Controller Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 without any doubt....Selhurst Park V Wimbledon and 13,000 Saints fans witnessing the great escape. Best aawy ground for atmosphere is St James's Park Newcastle, true fans not plastics fans like they are in the North west
oldsarum Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Olympique Marseille. That was a good (cough) atmosphere. Certainly was 1st time and only i'd ever seen tear gas used by police at a football match, the coach ride back to the airport was quite something too!, bl**dy mopeds everywhere, chucking stones, drain covers anything they could lay their hands on through the windows.
SaintRobbie Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Highbury when Delap scored the two headers and we thought we'd won the game and probably stayed up... and then they equalised. Any Fratton Park game - all were good fun regardless of the result. All the inflatable skates at the 4-1 drubbing even made it a good atmosphere!
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I was quite impressed with Derby the last couple of seasons, not only do they fill their stadiums but they are quite loud.
Depressed of Shirley Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Sunderland in either 81/82, not sure which. Third game of the season, and they had won their first two. Roker Park was full, and the noise incredible. We won 2-1.
Prince Jazzbo Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I know this may seem a long time ago. But I always remember playing at Oxford at the Manor Ground on Boxing Day in 1975ish, behind the goal was split between home and away, and had a very low roof, so it was really noisy. To be honest I couldn't see much of the game but the atmosphere was great. Also Orient in 1978 when we got promoted
Down and Out Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 The Steaua fans were impressive. That match also wins prizes for "cheapest beer" & the "wettest" game. And not forgetting the crumbling terrace and biggest badest riot Police I have ever seen....and that included the women officers too!
sandwichsaint Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Wolves away last season when we folded and they pretty much gained promotion, both ends of Molineux were absolutely rocking with us stuck forlornly in the middle! West Brom have good home fans. Highbury used to be great when it was standing on the North bank and at the 'clock end'. Bristol City are proper fans. Quietest? Middlesborough, Chelsea, Coventry (can't believe the nomination above for a 'good atmos' at Cov, I was there and it was pants), Blackburn.
The9 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Cardiff at Ninian Park You duplicitous bast3rd, after all the years I've known you! I'd have to say West Ham when I went to see them play Notts County in the FA Cup circa 1994. Midweek night replay, got the tube the width of London and my Notts Co supporting mate had his colours on ( until two stops prior to Upton Park). They were a very loud, furious home crowd, and I was utterly sh1tting myself in with the away fans when it went to extra time, and normally that kind of stuff doesn't bother me at all inside the ground. I believe Lee Chapman's late winner saved our lives. Kinda.
RonManager Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I know this may seem a long time ago. To be honest I couldn't see much of the game but the atmosphere was great. I was there, we also filled one side of the ground - 4-0 Saints
Arizona Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Hull made a decent noise when we got shafted there 5-0 a couple o' years back.
Nadia Sllim Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 About 79' I saw York City versus Barnsley , Barnsley fans made a racket in the open end and York fans were pretty impressive. I remember as a 14 year old boy spending the match watching the fans goading each other. To this day I do not know how my old man swung it for us to watch that match whilst on a family trip to Yorkshire?
shurlock Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Our 1-1 at West Brom (2007/08, monday night, penultimate game of the season) was a special atmoshphere. We started the night in the dropzone and they only needed a point to secure promotion - when Lallana put us 1 up with 15 mins to go we were so close to shutting them up.
egreog Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Try Celtic v Rangers.........most people who know will agree there is nothing in England to match it........albeit pretty nasty stuff!
Gemmel Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I went to the Leeds vs Millwall play off game at Elland Road and having done most big matches, this was far and away the loudest I've ever heard. The fact it was non stop as well was very impressive.
warsash saint Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Agreed that Man Utd was a decent atmosphere before all seater. They used to have the Utd fans sat right behind the away fans & always remember the whole grand chanting 'Hughsie' - was v.impressive. We always out sung the scousers when playing at Anfield. The roar at St James moments before kick off was impressive, the year I went there when we lost 5-1 (Nicky banger scored for us I think ?) .....mind you they still moaned at every referring decision. Elland Road was always a good atmoshere back in the day.
bungle Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Steaua. Put wimpy English football fans to shame. "Wah, wah, we need a roof to make noise" - no you don't.
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Not back in the '80's and the Holte end was terracing it wasn't! Agreed! It was also loud and quite lairy in their opposite end on the night of the 3rd Round replay in 1976. And we had some Spuds fans in with us because their replay, at Stoke, had been called off!
latter day saint Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Try Celtic v Rangers.........most people who know will agree there is nothing in England to match it........albeit pretty nasty stuff! hate to say it but i got to agree with that. definately lives up to the hype  only game i been to that came anywhere near to it was Ajax v Feyenoord. 1st time they played each other at the Ajax arena, in with the Feyenoord fans who decided to set fire to the concourse
Jules Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Blackburn fans are awesome. But they're all gone before the end.
saints triumph Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 that was in the cup final season so 2002. In all the times i've been following saints away i fail to remember a home support which really stand out. The only one that does come to mind is the derby fans in the play off semi, we outsung them all game but when they did sing they were pretty loud. that may be because the derby fans were being amplified and played back through speakers.
adelfas31 Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I really enjoyed Forest at the end of last season. Despire our plight, Saints fans were fantastic, supporting the team to the end and the respect shown to Wotte and the team at the end was terrific. And we had one last pop at Roops. 'Down cos of Rupert, we're going....' For noise, Newcastle on a Wed night if my memory isn't failing me, the year of, 'I'd love it, love it...' and they were pushing United for the title. We lost 1-0 I think, but we couldn't make any noise at all from start to finish - you just couldn't hear yourself with their constant noise.
SaintRobbie Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I watched Jamaica v USA in Kingston once. The blue cloud of pot that surrounded the stadium made for an interesting atmosphere. It was kopesetic mon.
