chrisobee Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 Anyone know if there will be online highlights of the goals anywhere? They'll be on here at some point, also on Sky I believe ? http://www.the90thminute.com/soccer/2009/10/johnstone-paint-trophy-southern-and-northern-section-round-2-recap-and-video-highlights-tuesday-october-6-2009/
Crab Lungs Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 I could have told anyone for free that Perry is rubbish, Thomas limited and Gillett woefully short of confidence. OK, didn't go but I've seen enough of these players to form a pretty balanced opinon, and from the reports on here I'm pretty much on the money. Not a great fan of Gillett but would imagine he is unfancied under Pardew and therefore pretty low. Irrespective, like The9 said, can't help but think the game was setting him up for a bit of a fall. Anyway, it's clear to say we've probably only got about max 14 players who can play consistently to the standard of L1 (or Champ) and the rest are duffers.
Viking Warrior Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 Two additional points firstly did AP sudden departure from the club lastnight on other busines have anything to do with trying to lure George Burley back as DOF. just to Keep Happy Chappy Alpine happy? Also Alpine your first names not Geoff by any chance? The other point I want to raise was the lighting at SMS or more two the point the giant TVs. I thought the flood lighting was pretty poor but could help notice that everytime the Skandia ad and Flybe ads were on there was a surge of bright light in the ground then back into a dismal light. I wonder how much this affected the players especially as there were so many hi balls played. I don't know if this sudden surge of bright white light from these two ads affected the players but it started to irritate me. Did anyone else notice
derry Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 I have noticed the change Mike but I'm not sure I'd agree about the lights as I've never queried their power up to now. I remember the original lights at the Dell which I think hosted the first floodlit or first competitive floodlit match in the country and the at least two newer improved systems which I don't remember being anything like as good as these. I haven't been to any of the new top grounds but they don't seem much different looking at the tv picture. I'll pay more attention now you've mentioned it next time they are on in the dark.
Viking Warrior Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 The lights may not affect the players but I did notice the sudden brief surge of light being emmitted from the TV screens,. I probably noticed it more as it was a dire night weather wise as well as the football. The young lad behind us made me chuckle particularly the comments re the ref and spec savers. Cleary he is destined for great things in the northam X factor vocal competition:rolleyes:

I haven't been to any of the new top grounds but they don't seem much different looking at the tv picture. I'll pay more attention now you've mentioned it next time they are on in the dark. I noticed that every time the ball went above the floodlights it was much harder to see - (and that happened a lot!!!). I missed the penalties as I had to get the last train home (watching the reports on here as I walked back from the ground), but we should have been 4-0 up after 12 minutes. After that I was just hoping that nobody got injured, what with a league game just 3 days away. I understand the interest in this competition but with the small, work in progress competitive 1st team that we have at the moment and bookings mounting up and not much cover (as discussed above by many), games like that could conspire against us (eg Kelvin/Post incident). I would have done an Arsene Wenger and put out a team of reserves/fringe/promising academy players for this stage of the competition - a chance for them to prove themselves and avoid the cull. Once we get past January and have a deeper 1st team squad, then fine. And before anyone hits me with the 'does that mean you won't go to Wembley etc etc' line - of course, that's why I left work early, travelled 300 miles to and from a game I knew I wouldn't see all of and walked 5 miles home in the ****ing rain from the station at my end at 1 in the morning. My concerns are the 'here and now' - we are starting to produce in League 1 and I for one do not want anything to jeopardise that.

Cabrone Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 Playing 1 up front at home to f**king Torquay? FFS Pardew grow a pair! Couldn't agree more. Pardew has thrown away points through his needless negativity so far this season. AP - stop fretting about losing and start thinking about winning! We have the strikers to do the damage - play them!
DrZuess1979 the 2nd Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 Anyone else notice we had the highest attendance yesterday
Saint_clark Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 Anyone else notice we had the highest attendance yesterday Not surprising. I'd like us to get over 10k for the next round, and the club should help by lowering the ticket prices to a fiver each.

AP - stop fretting about losing and start thinking about winning! We have the strikers to do the damage - play them! What a stupid post. Only backward Brits still think 4-4-2 is a good formation. Sort your own life out and realise that 4-5-1 (played properly, not as the backward Brits used to play it) is the best formation around.
Thedelldays Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 Not surprising. I'd like us to get over 10k for the next round, and the club should help by lowering the ticket prices to a fiver each. They are not going to do this whilst they had the highest gate. FFS

dubai_phil Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 Out of interest, when was the last time we had such a one sided MoTM poll? Just under 73% must take some beating, specially for someone who had his own thread about being karp a week ago

stevegrant Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 And I wonder how many who voted for him weren't at the match but saw he scored two goals and thought he earned it To be fair, with two goals he did at least contribute, which can't be said for most of the rest of them.

That was so last year.
saint_stevo Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 There should have been an option for 'nobody' on the MOTM poll
chrisobee Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 There should have been an option for 'nobody' on the MOTM poll Well that option is essentially not to vote isn't it !
saint_stevo Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 Well that option is essentially not to vote isn't it ! No, because i dont think anyone deserved it!
RinNY Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 And I wonder how many who voted for him weren't at the match but saw he scored two goals and thought he earned it If he keeps scoring goals, may he get many more motm votes: never underestimate the value of having players with the knack of being Johnny-on-the-spot when the ball needs to be forced over the opposing goal line. You can't win games without scoring goals.

Viking Warrior Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 Im suprised that he got such a high % vote. I thought he was out of sorts. I think he 2nd he got was very fortunate as it seemed to go in from a rebound from a clearence off his shins. Still a wins a win. For me thats a 100% return on my first visit to SMS this season. Shame I have to go home on Sunday weather permitting,
derry Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 We played three in the middle of the field, which once Antonio drifted inside, became a no passing, no movement off the ball, lopsided shambles. We got what we deserved and were losing 2-0, once changed to a lop sided 4-4-2 and Waigo restored to the right side we at least pulled the game back despite having essentially one decent central midfielder.

They had been in our half twice, we had been camped out in the last third of the pitch and had about 6 corners by then! Far from faultless performance but no way their minimal possession warranted a two goal lead!

They had been in our half twice, we had been camped out in the last third of the pitch and had about 6 corners by then! Far from faultless performance but no way their minimal possession warranted a two goal lead! We didn't look like scoring in the first half. We had the most of the possesion in the first 20mins, other than that we had very little. The black guy in the middle for them bossed the game IMO Oh, and corners are useless to us. May as well just give the keeper the ball
chrisobee Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 Oh, and corners are useless to us. May as well just give the keeper the ball Wasn't that precisely what we did :smt102
NickG Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 think the standard of opposition made people get frustrated quickly -high expectations for hatful of goals after weekend - then two soft goals. Basically we were without our three "clever" players in midfield - Lallana, Mellis and Schneiderlin. Gillett / Hammond / Wotton all too similar. But it was still the easiest 2-2 draw I have ever seen!
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 Waigo scored 2 of the worst goals i have ever seen as well! Made me laugh You are a prize phallus.
saint_stevo Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 You are a prize phallus. Ouch......hardly screamers though eh. Poor touch for the first and tackled it in, and then he scuffed the tap-in for his second goal
RonManager Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 Highlights on Saints Player now. All the pens.
RinNY Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 Unless it is rasiak...right? Far from it: I always thought Rasiak did a good job for us with his goals, & didn't deserve the stick he got for all the things he didn't do when he DID do the one thing he was being paid to do: score! Any player who scores frequently, no matter how "soft" or crappy his goals, is a player who deserves praise and to be played regularly. It is THE most difficult and important skill in the game.
niceandfriendly Posted 7 October, 2009 Posted 7 October, 2009 (edited) It makes me laugh how some people slag off players because "all they do is score goals". Now Rasiak is gone, we need a new goalscorer to slate! So far Waigo fits the bill. Edited 7 October, 2009 by niceandfriendly

These people would rather have Brett Ormerod thrashing around looking busy with very little end product.
chrisobee Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 A goal is a goal, that's the end product without which everything else is of no value. Pretty simple really and I could bore everyone, including myself, to death with a list of players who rarely if ever scored from outside the box. For us though Ted MacDougall did little else but score goals and his partnership with Phil Boyer was a main reason why we were promoted in 77/78.

You get no more value from a 30 yard screamer than you do for a ricochet off somebody's left buttock. At least with scruffy goals, players are getting into positions in to the areas where they can cause panic/damage.

Davis came and not for the first time missed, square back four let player free for penalty, centre backs second best all night in the air, yes we got what we deserved for atrocious defending. Furthermore with the two easy chances Torquay had towards the end not hitting the target they could have been out of sight with us just out.

Was on Davis`s case through the whole match said that "davis was only good a saving pen`s because he`s a good guesser" WELL YES !!!!!! On this subject might I just add that although Davis generally does fairly well I think that we may be more solid at the back with a keeper who commands his area a little better.Whether anyone more competent would be available at a price we would be willing to pay is something completely different.

Davis is a superlative shotstopper. I feel though that he sometimes goes to ground too early on penalties and players who see it and can react just hit it the opposite side. His little will I, won't I throw it dance is a bit of a joke as everybody including the players knows he is going to chicken out and kick in due course. His communication, command of his box, and catching of high balls and crosses under pressure is poor. I thought the Bristol Rovers goalkeeper was excellent also Muller of Barnsley, Lonergan of Preston plus quite a few others whose all round game was much better, mostly free transfers compared with what we paid Sunderland for Davis. I wonder how well Bialkowski played for Barnsley in the two wins over WBA and Ipswich.
SFC Forever Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 I said on another thread that this game would have been a good one in which to give Bart a game. Having been played in two winning games he would have been ready and might not have thrown away/gifted torquay either goal.
chrisobee Posted 8 October, 2009 Posted 8 October, 2009 Put Le Tissier's name up on the next poll and I assure you he will get a higher percentage than that.... Surely you are not suggesting a poll might be rigged, shame on you !
