SuperMikey Posted 25 May, 2010 Share Posted 25 May, 2010 You've probably all heard this by now, but... U2 HAVE OFFICIALLY PULLED OUT OF GLASTONBURY 2010 Apparently Bono could risk neck-down paralyis if he doesn't recover properly from the back surgery he had recently. I wasn't going to see U2 anyway, but it's a bit of a b!tch for all the fans who were dying to see them, including Eavo who'd been trying to book them for over a decade and a half apparently. Rumours are flying round the internet at the moment as to who the replacements will be, and the most likely at the moment seem to be Coldplay or Radiohead, as they're both in the UK at that time. Others include AC/DC (who are due to play a gig in Spain the next day), The Rolling Stones (who apparently rejected the offer of a Sunday headline slot because they weren't offering enough money), The Chemical Brothers (supposedly playing next year instead), The Small Faces (reformed with a new lineup including Mick Hucknall, GAG) and Depeche Mode (who will have just come off a world tour). My personal choice would be Rage Against The Machine, they played in '94 and have their free 'Rage Factor' gig a couple of weeks after the festival, it'd be the perfect warmup ala Kings of Leon in '08 and Springsteen and Blur last year, who all played Hyde Park shortly after playing at Glastonbury. swannymere Posted 25 May, 2010 Author Share Posted 25 May, 2010 I have to say i'm a little gutted by this, i hope Dizzee doesn't get the headline slot; i like him but he isn't worthy of this slot yet. As for who could take it over i'd like one of the following AC/DC, Kanye West, Led Zeppelin (dreaming i know!), Kylie (she had to drop out before), Coldplay or Radiohead would be ok but i've seen them before in this slot. SuperMikey Posted 26 May, 2010 Share Posted 26 May, 2010 I am literally tingling with excitement caused by Gorillaz playing! They'll get Snoop Doggy Dogg on and probably Mos Def as well (they're playing at the same time, but they'll sort it out). Damon Albarn playing 2 years in a row! SuperMikey Posted 26 May, 2010 Share Posted 26 May, 2010 Just had a major rethink of the bands i'm seeing at Glasto, going to see a lot of smaller bands this year methinks. Gotten really into bands like Local Natives, Frankie and the Heartstrings and Strange Boys recently, so I was pleasantly surprised to see all of them on the lineup! Anyone else planning to see Four Lions at the Cinema Field on Thursday night? We could perhaps have a SWF meet?

swannymere Posted 27 May, 2010 Author Share Posted 27 May, 2010 Why not? Nah, Kylie, Led Zeppelin or even Coldplay would have been better, they've given into the media critics over the whole 'not appealing to youth' crap.
SuperMikey Posted 27 May, 2010 Share Posted 27 May, 2010 Led Zep would've been fantastic, but Plant has given up on that now. I think he thought it'd be a one-off, but such high demand has driven his band closer to a full reunion (obviously without JB) and him further away from one. Kylie is meh. Coldplay are awful. Gorillaz will be great, they'll have a myriad of special guests (conveniently most of the guest stars on their latest album were playing Glasto anyway) and any band with Damon Albarn in will never put on a bad show. SuperMikey Posted 22 June, 2010 Share Posted 22 June, 2010 Just a quick update on the Special Guest situation, there are some bands highly rumoured to be playing the three Special Guest slots at The Park stage on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday is heavily rumoured to be Thom Yorke's (of Radiohead) band Atoms For Peace, which contains Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as many other famous musicians who play Thom's solo stuff from his album 'The Eraser'. Saturday is almost nailed on to be Biffy Clyro after the band's official Facebook page released a cryptic clue earlier by spelling the word 'Glasto' using the Celtic alphabet. Sunday is rumoured to be The Strokes, as lead singer Julian Casablancas is playing later that day onsite and the band play two shows on the Friday and Saturday in mainland Europe, so it's feasible that he'd bring the band with him to Glasto! Either way, it's promising to be a brilliant weekend and i'm highly looking forward to it!

It looks like Biffy definitely are playing Spudgun, they released another picture clue today which was solved and revealed to say Park Stage, Saturday, 6.40 (when the special guest slot is). My advice - get there early if you want to see them! They'll get a big crowd. So excited about going now, unfortunately I have two 150 minute exams tomorrow, so i'm going after they're finished, my mate is going at 5am to set up the tent and then come back...brave soul! Have a great weekend everyone!
SuperMikey Posted 28 June, 2010 Share Posted 28 June, 2010 WOW. What a weekend! Couldn't have taken it any hotter, only saw half the bands I wanted to because I had to shelter inside half of the time to ecape from the sun! Quick rundown of the bands I watched as i'm off to bed in a minute: FRIDAY Rolf Harris (Pyramid) - Really got the crowd going, good singalongs and funny guy Miike Snow (John Peel) - Got a huge crowd and played some good tunes Phoenix (Other) - Amazing set, loads of energy and one of the best of the weekend Local Natives (Park) - Brilliant songs, shame not many more people went to see them as they were definitely one of the standout sets of the weekend for me. Nice n summery! The Woodentops (Avalon) - Scary, just scary. The singer kept staring at me and my mate, whatever he was on, it would probably knock out a rhino. Newton Faulkner (Avalon) - Always brilliant live and no change here. Got the crowd singing along like madmen (and madwomen) when he played a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody Thom Yorke/Special Guests (Park) - Only caught the end of this as we were on the other side of the site when it started, but got there just in time to hear Karma Police and Street Spirit, fantastic! Gorillaz (Pyramid) - Yawn. I like Gorillaz, but it was so tedious and boring. Honestly. Damon, remember the crowd are there next time you're about to play a 5 minute banjo instrumental. SATURDAY Two Door Cinema Club (Other) - Really good sound live, lots of energy. Will be a really big band, trust me! The Lightning Seeds (Pyramid) - Anthemic rock tunes, some good singing from the crowd. Three Lions went down well before the game actually started... Biffy Clyro/Special Guests (Park) - Had a huge crowd, possibly the worst kept secret of the weekend. Played a good set though Steve Harley & The ****ney Rebels (Avalon) - Played to a big crowd and went down well, some big singalongs Charlie Winston (Avalon) - Definitely my favourite set of the weekend, he was absolutely amazing! He's a major star in France but despite being from Sussex, he's virtually unknown over here! It's criminal! Worked the crowd so well too Laura Marling (Park) - Drew a big crowd, most of whom just talked all the way through. If you go to see a band/artist - you tend to actually listen to them play! Heard most of her set from up the big ribbon tower Muse (Pyramid) - Only caught the last half hour, but it seems they went down well. Still absolutely loathe their new stuff though SUNDAY Dan Mangan (John Peel) - Just caught his set after returning from taking all the stuff to the car, went down really well but I think I was the only one who actually knew who he was there... The Temper Trap (Other) - Got a big crowd in the scorching hot sun, Sweet Disposition was definitely one of the best songs I saw of the festival Ray Davies (Pyramid) - Boring Goldhawks (Queen's Head) - Boringer Jack Johnson (Pyramid) - Boringest Faithles (Pyramid) - AMAZING! There was a fight near me just before they started though, first one i've ever seen at Glasto which is a shame.

There was a fight near me just before they started though, first one i've ever seen at Glasto which is a shame. Are you saying it’s a shame you haven’t seen more fights!!!! I jest Interesting glasto for me, overall a good one (this was my second) but if I go again I’d only do it as part of a group, as I went with one other person and was a bit gutted having to either do what they wanted or go off on my own. At least with a few people there’s the chance that others would be up for a bit more exploring. So didn’t really get to see a lot of the stuff that went on, we only really moved around the main areas. I’ve learnt that sun cream seems to have a bleaching effect on clothing which makes me wish I hadn’t worn my favourite t-shirt! I also learnt that I am turning into a grumpy old man. Sunday was arse for me as the guy I went with announced when we got there that he had to work on the Monday so had to leave Sunday night. As I was the driver this meant I couldn’t drink Sunday and that combined with the tired legs and general tiredness put me in a grumpy mood as whilst everyone else was loving their day, I wasn’t really getting into it so much! I saw; Friday Detroit Social Club (John Peel) – Good – didn’t really know much about them but I liked. De Staat (John Peel) – can’t really remember so only word I can use is unmemorable! The Stranglers (Other) – Never knew much of them (or so I thought) so was surprised I recognised several of their songs! The Courteeners (Other) – ok, didn’t blow me away Kele (John Peel) – I love Bloc Party and I loved this as well. For me, highlight of the day Vampire Weekend (Pyramid) – Caught the last half hour, was pretty busy, average in my opinion Delphic (West Dance) – A very close second for my highlight of the day. Sasha (Glade) – Same old same old for me. By this time I was ratted so just followed the dance Saturday Tinchy Stryder (Pyramid) – Not my cup of tea but was alright to listen too whilst eating a bacon sarni The Lightning seeds (Pyramid) – Good stuff, again not my cup of tea, but when in rome and all that! Was there after Tinchy so stuck around Imogen Heap (Other) – Thought I would hate her, but actually liked her as she was a bit mental (but in a nice way) Beach House (The Park) – Jesus Christ, I wonder how many of their fans cut themselves whilst listening to this music. Must be heavily influenced by radiohead Stornaway (The Park) – Easy listening, ok Biffy Clyro (The Park) – Amazing. Totally rocked. As SuperMikey said above, worst kept secret ever, but I got there very early and roughed it near the front with the kids for Biffy. Editors (Other) – Personally I like the Editors so enjoyed this. Some good tunes but they weren’t as good as last year in my opinion Muse (Pyramid) – Fantastic. Busiest crowd I experienced (whilst not being near the front). Been told before that Muse are good live and they didn’t disappoint. Although I am not a U2 fan, when they came back on stage with the Edge and played the U2 track the atmosphere was truly amazing. Sunday We are Scientists (Other) - Loved them, great set, crowd full of knobs where I was, however I may have been more tolerant to their youthfulness had I been drinking. Saying that, I’m unsure as to why anyone can’t understand why them arriving late and standing inches (and I mean literally 3 inches) in front of someone totally blocking their view (when there was actually plenty of space) would lead to anything other than a ‘polite’ word in their ear! Faithless (Pyramid) – Fantastic – Great atmosphere, was Maxi Jazz crying when he finished? Looked very emotional!

SuperMikey Posted 28 June, 2010 Share Posted 28 June, 2010 Biffy were good, played quite a lot of old tunes as well which was good, although not many around me knew them. Wish they still finished with 'Jaggy Snake', that would shake the Glasto crowd up a bit! Having had time to reflect on the festival now, I think it was okay. Not great imo, and it could have been a lot better. Obviously the weather was a factor for me because I don't really cope very well in heat (i'm a big lad and burn like paper), but the line-up was overall pretty mediocre considering the occasion. '08 and '09 were much better festivals, I enjoyed them a lot more and the atmosphere was a lot nicer. Noticed an influx of 'Council Estate Trevors' this year shouting at their kids whilst supping warm Carlsberg on a slightly too small camping chair in the Pyramid field and there was a lot more loutish behaviour including some pr!ck drunkenly falling onto our tent and kicking my mate in the face in the process at 2am, which didn't go down too well... I've decided to volunteer as a Steward for next year, and may volunteer at a fair few other festivals as well, anyone got any suggestions as to where to try? I thought RockNess would be good, they had a great line-up this year and it's a nice site too, medium sized festival so not too many people to deal with at once. swannymere Posted 29 June, 2010 Author Share Posted 29 June, 2010 So i was right about the Gorillaz then? Apparently up their own arses sprung to most peoples mind! Didn't get to see many bands but my highlight was Sir Stevie of Wonder who had one of the largest crowds i've seen at the Pyramid, cheesy, but firkin' fantastic!!! Caught a tiny bit of Shakira as i was en route elsewhere and have to say that although not the usual 'Glastonbury fodder' seemed to have the crowd eating out of her hands, Dizzee sounded pretty good and Mos Def was pretty cool on Friday night. MGMT were disappointing but overall a good Glastonbury (remember kiddywinks, it's not ALL about the bands!) Great food, friends and memories. Best food venue - EarthHeart at the top of the hill between The Park and the Smallworld was the best place on site between 2am-8am and the best overall was Clara's Caribbean opposite Burrow Hill Cider. SuperMikey Posted 29 June, 2010 Share Posted 29 June, 2010 If you want to talk about food, i'm more than happy to oblige! Had a fantastic vegetable curry from Gastro Dome opposite the Leftfield, only cost a fiver as well and a huge portion, definitely value for money! Still got to cross off La Grande Bouffe, Piminister and Goan Fish Curry from my list of places to eat at, they're supposed to be fantastic. Barely drank any alcohol all weekend as I had a couple of pints of Brothers on the friday on an empty stomach and that coupled with the heat made me feel sick as a dog for most of the day. Would have preferred it to be a bit cooler, perhaps 18c-23c and a bit of rain to cool things off but apart from that it was a great festival! I remember you telling me about volunteering at the festival before Swanny, how did you go for it again? Thinking about applying through Oxfam but they usually get stuck with the duff jobs onsite like car parking, would prefer to be doing something around one of the stages if possible... IamLeGod Posted 3 July, 2010 Share Posted 3 July, 2010 Right I saw Gorillaz, and I have just watched it back. I fail to see how anyone was not blown away by this. It was without a doubt the most ambitious, wide-ranging eclectic headline set at Glasto in the 40 years! To achieve such a tight set in such short notice and manage to co-ordinate such a staggering array of guests in a matter of weeks is an amazing feat in itself. For those who say they didn't play the hits, minus 1999-2000 I struggle to think of anything they missed, and it was obvious they were going to play stuff off the album they released like two months ago. Tell me a band that wouldn't do that. It's not as if they have an extensive back catalogue, this was only their 3rd album. Plastic Beach is also an incredible album. Another criticism I've heard aimed at them is that they looked disinterested. Damon Albarn has a naturally moody face, despite this he looked as though he was loving every second. It's hard to do much whilst playing a keyboard. Mick Jones looked as though he was having the time of his life. Sean Ryder was clearly buzzing (and surprisingly coherent by his standards). Mark E Hall looked honoured to be there, Lou Reed is a posing git but still looked pretty chuffed. It's hard to accuse an orchestra of looking bored, its not as if they can do much other than play their instruments. Still think this was the absolute highlight of the weekend, and will go down as one of the most spectacular headline sets in the history of Glastonbury. It's hard to accuse an orchestra of looking bored, its not as if they can do much other than play their instruments. Still think this was the absolute highlight of the weekend, and will go down as one of the most spectacular headline sets in the history of Glastonbury. It was a bad choice of set IMO. Far too many slow non-glasto like things to start with, this doesn't mean that they weren't good but when in the party mood it's not what you want to hear. however, Snoop coming on for Clint Eastwood made up for that. SuperMikey Posted 3 July, 2010 Share Posted 3 July, 2010 Agree with Steve, while they may have looked good on the TV playing their slower songs, the 100,000 people that turned out to watch them left in droves after the first few songs. There were probably 70,000 left for Clint Eastwood, that's testimony to how they went down tbh. If you're making a session album in a studio, you can play the stuff that is more crafted and eloquent, as people will have all the time in the world to listen to it and appreciate it. If you're playing in front of a baying crowd of festival revellers, you have to play stuff to amuse them. I was really looking forward to Gorillaz, i'm a massive fan of their work, but I was bitterly disappointed by their set, and walking around the festival talking to people, that was also the general consensus. swannymere Posted 3 July, 2010 Author Share Posted 3 July, 2010 and will go down as one of the most spectacular headline sets in the history of Glastonbury. Sorry, but they were not even the best headline act of the weekend let alone in the history of the festival. ALOT of people trashed them including the media who normally blow smoke up there arses. The only other band who've fallen flat on their faces were Oasis, twice.
Junction 9 Posted 4 July, 2010 Share Posted 4 July, 2010 Have to agree with the majority, it was a poor choice and poor experience. I left about halfway through the set and thousands were doing the same. I am not a massive fan I admit that but I was still keen to see what sort of show they would put on. Dull would be the word I'd use to describe it, didn't entertain or hold my attention at all. To think I missed the Flaming lips for it (I think) is a bit giutting. Everyone has an opinion obviously but to say it's the best Pyramid perfomance in 40 years? Not even close. I would say I've seen in the region of 15-20 Pyramid headliners and it was in the bottom 3 along with White stripes and Oasis.
