Advertising, marketing and PR.

Just thought I would ask on here. My cousin is an advertising and marketing student at bournemouth university and is currently seeking a placement either for next year or for six weeks in the summer. Does anyone work in these fields who would be willing to take on a student for this period? Help out a fellow saints fan?

I am not based in that area so I can't help directly but when I started out I volunteered for The National Trust in a similar capacity. It would be worth contacting the local regional head office or individual trust properties to see if they have anything suitable. It really helped me out, I got experience and a foot in the door.

There are some posters on here who are quite prominent members of the EDL. With all the negative PR surrounding them at the moment, perhaps your cousin could get in contact with them and see if he could possibly help repair their tarnished image?

There are no decent full service media agencies in or around Southampton (Lawton are the best and they specialise in recruitment).

Most big London Agencies (Carat, Media Edge CIA, Mediacom, Maxus, Vizeum etc) will offer a placement with expenses paid if he's good enough. If he's serious about getting into that business he's going to have to be prepared to move to London anyway so it will be good practice.

Remarkable Group in Winchester are on the up, winning lots of CIPR awards. I am friends with the CEO, Stephen Pomeroy. He is worth contacting.

Aren't you a journalist?

Indeed, hence my assertion that working in advertising, marketing and PR is working for the devil.

However, one day, I will probably end up giving in and trying to move into corporate communications or PR. It's much more financially rewarding, doncha know.

I am sorry you feel that way. Don't tar us all with the same brush.

Surely there are professions far more noble than a journalist though?

I'm sure you're all lovely people and most of the PR people I speak to are very helpful. However, a lot of the time, it would just be a lot easier if I could speak to somebody in authority direct, rather than having to go through a press officer to get a watered-down version of the truth.

As it happens, I feel that working in the 4th estate is pretty noble. Aside from all the human interest stuff, which generates the sales, there is a lot of important work done to ensure various authorities are held to account and the public knows what is going on. The people who work on local papers generally work quite hard for what most people would consider low pay. The jobs are particularly low paid compared to most people who work in PR.

I'm not bitter.

I've done my time as a journo although still freelance a bit. I much prefer my PR role as it allows me to be an expert in a particular area. Plus the PR company I am with are very nice and most newspaper employers are a bunch of ****s.

I even manage to get paid twice occasionally for freelance articles - by the magazine/paper and by a client.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just to make people aware who responded to this thread, my cousin is now responding to the various emails and things. He has been delayed by one or two things (most notably the New York marathon which he took part in as well!) so apologies for the delay but it should all be sorted this evening. Thanks again :)
