Soton City Council Leader, Royston Smith, said publically on Tues that the City will support a Saints World Cup bid

1. Too late?

2. If not would you, as a Soton ratepayer, be happy to spend £200k out of taxes on a support document as Liverpool have done for what should be a nailed on application in their case?

I guess, if successful, we'd be awarded maybe a couple of group games and possibly nothing much more. Without any knowledge this would be hard to weigh up but a summer spot, near the sea and tourist attractions might bring a fair bit of support and a healthy return on £200k investment.

Plus some help from the Football authorities to improve the ground, surrounding facilities, raise capacity etc?

I think it might well be worth the punt. If you don't ask then you don't get.

**EDIT** Might ML be philanthropic enough to share the initial burden of the £200k with the council? Another chance to raise the profile of the club and city.

Might be worth asking what the Southampton Area spend on marketing to foreign tourists each year. Getting a WC base would be far wider reaching than the few pages on the Visit England Web Site

Just the Hotel Occupancy levels for the games would bring in a bunch of revenue - just remember to charge a Local Council "Visitors Development Levy" on the room rates during game time

The SCC have wasted far far more on significantly more stupid ideas and plans so I don't think this paltry figure should bother anyone.

Plus, the potential for revenue from Tourism would be astronomically high. Having said that, I'm sure they won't stick around long when they've done their beans in West Quay, aviation museum and, er, the Tudor House.

1. Don't know, only time will tell.

2. Just sack one of those odious council execs who does bugger all and you have your £200k. Alternatively, tell the odious councillors that they will only get bus fares or parking paid for, instead of their £18k(ish) a year. Not public service, more like line your pockets.
