Anyone know what the bookies are saying right now?

10 favourites to go down @5/1, those with shorter odds are-

Wycombe

Stockport County

Tranmere

Exeter

Yeovil

Leyton Orient

Carlisle

Hartlepool

Walsall

29/1 for promotion, only Exeter, Leyton Orient, Stockport County, Yeovil Tranmere and Wycombe have longer odds.

Lambert 9/1 to be league top scorer behind Rhodes of Huddersfield and Beckford of Leeds

Early days of course but is interesting to see that 78% of our fans expect us to finish from 12th to 20th. Only 5% expect top 6 (we know who those people obviously are) and 7% think we will be relegated. After reading the posts over the past few day's i have to say i am surprised at that and shows our fans are not expecting as much as people would lead you to believe.

  • 2 weeks later...

My view is that we are building a team to go up in the automatic places next year, but if things go well we could sneak and it would be a sneak into the play offs this year. i would be happy with a 10th finish with a good squad built for next year. However next season may not be a walk over league especially (i know there are problems with them) if Notts County come up with money. But the atmosphere at saints seems great already and we have not set the world alight!

I've thought all along that we will have a really good 2nd half of the season & just miss out on play off place, but be in a good position to go all out next year for automatic promotion. Ap having put all the pieces of the jig saw in position for next season. Although I would love to be wrong & get a play off place this year & get promoted at Wembley, all right back to reality.

It's a long shot but play-offs are certainly achievable. It will need championship form but we have the best keeper, a strong defence, our strikers are scoring and Hammond is immense in midfield.

The important thing is we have strength in depth which will be important when injuries and suspensions kick in towards the end of the season, we don't have to catch Leeds or Charlton, we just have to catch Swindon in 6th place.

The team should be firing on all cylinders soon now that the bedding in period is coming to an end. Realistically we should win more often than not.

If we've closed that gap to the play-off places to about 6-8 points by the end of January we can go into the transfer market and get the squad geared for a push.

With our resources and the team we've got we are likely to become stronger at the back end of the season whilst many clubs currently in the top half of the table will start to suffer from injuries and they will lack the funds needed to rectify problem areas in their team.

The play-offs are a realistic target.

amazing - thats almost (apart from the 3-6 place) a perfect normal distribution. Probably suggests that almost everyone has given the position that they really think saints will finish in, rather than where they really hope we'll finish.

So the most probable outcome is mid-table!

Presumably some statistician on here will say I'm completely wrong!

You seem right about the distribution - but that only suggests that the sample was relatively valid. To assume from that that the majority are better informed/more likely to be correct than the optimists/pessimists is going too far. But I'm not a statistician.

Last year's league table shows that any of the top three, minus 10 points would still have made the play-offs. Franchise Town (3rd place) lost 11 times in the season.

I think we'll just miss the play-offs.

There's no reason why our form shouldn't be in the top 3 in the league between now and the end of the season. I'm not sure if that would be good enough for the play-offs or not.

If we win two out of our next three then I will start to believe in play-offs but at the moment I think we will fall just short.

I have thought all along we would finish mid table I see no reason to change my mind. We have no devine right to win every game I think we now have a squad to compete in this league & think we will win more than we lose but this season has always been about building for next season.

There are some big clubs in this league this season I hope the likes of Leeds Charlton & Norwich get promoted as it will give us a better chance next season. We have to face facts that we were on - 10 with no pre season & started the campaign with a squad that wasnt good enough & we didnt have a very good start.

We now have a team that can do really well in this league & in the CCC when we get promoted I can see AP getting 1 or 2 quality signings in Jan & a couple more in the summer with a view to push on.

We have good owners a good manager good team & fantastic fans I just hope we can remain patient there are bound to be a few blips along the way 3 wins dont make us the best team in the league just as a couple of defeats dont make us the worst but we are on the right road to better times.

I still expect between 13th and 18th. 18th is the minimum i expect for this season. So anything above that is a bonus.

But i don't think were finish there that is just what i expect.

I think we will probably finish around 8th. Which would be very good. Our team is one of the better ones in the league. Add to that we got a transfer window in a couple of months so could add to it. I just think the -10 and the lack of pre-season really did us in for this year. We slowly got rid of it and that was down to preperation. The last 6 games or so have shown we are a decent team, only 1 defeat in the last 9 games. We will have some more twists and turns in this season but overall miss out on the playoffs by about 10 points. Which would be the final ghost of our recent history laid to rest.

I'd love to say play off position but not totally convinced despite the recent run so I've gone for the safer "just missed out".

Heart says maybe the play offs but this may be overly optimistic as, despite having done much good in transforming a bewildered and diminished/poor quality squad, Pardew's done so much but still has some way to go.

If we don't hit the play offs this season, I expect us to storm the League in 2010/11.

I may have skewed the results by saying top 6. It was on Friday, it was late, i was drunk, we'd just won. I'm sorry. I made a mistake.

But secretly i am hoping we do it!

Biggest indicator for me though is that we win a lot of matches after Christmas. If we do that and not go up it doesn't matter as we'll be ready for next season and should, er, walk this league.

It was still our lowest ever league finish,in that case what is our lowest ever football league finish then? We also finished 14th in Div 3 1n 1959,

Saints lowest league finish is 14th in Div 3 (South) in 1955/6, but due to the existence of Div 3 (North) that is the equivalent of coming 4th in League Two (around 71st/72nd out of the 92 clubs - assuming parity between Div 3 North and South).

The worst we can finish this season is our current position in 68th of the 92 as there are 24 teams from League Two below us, as well as any of League One we overtake.

Due to the late 50's restructuring, the 14th in Div 3 (with a Div 4 below it) in 1959 is the direct equivalent of 14th in League One now, but that's irrelevant, as it's not our worst finish.

Nice to get a chance to quote myself earlier in the thread too when some people were saying we're in a relegation battle :

We've played 4 of the top 6 and none of the bottom 6 (5 excluding us), and haven't lost to anyone below 8th (and even they haven't lost at home yet).

The effort and drive of the team, and the quality of the players comprising that team is significantly and tangibly better than it was even for the first match of this season, never mind last season.

We're not even in the bottom 4 on 10-match form without the 10 point deduction now.

Looks a bit better a couple of weeks later, doesn't it ?

Right thats cleared that up then - clear as mud. That said though, like you - I think we'll finish somewhere in this League...!

Expect and think are two different things.

The question was "Where do you expect Saints to finish". As stated i expect at bare minimum 18th. That is my expectations for the club this year.

That does not mean i think they will finish 18th just that at bare minimum that is the rank they must achieve.

capiche? :)

Would be interesting to see what people are thinking now. I for one would increase my prediction but still think it'll be tough (but not unlikely) to reach the playoffs. At no point this season have I ever thought we would finish near the bottom, too much dross in this division.

agree, it won't prove anything - draw or defeat won't be the end of the world but a victory will show we can go impressive runs including beating several in form teams and think people will be looking at us as serious play off contenders.

Most importantly, the run - with beating MK Dons would give us a vital ingredient we have been missing for years - winning mentality/confidence

Ask the question again in a months time and we will have a better idea, Winning three on the spin is great but if we could extend that sequence to six or seven then maybe we can be contenders. Big ,Big game against the MK this week and I for one wont give up on a play off place this season yet.

many changing their view?

I stand by what I said pre-season

Top 2 – Amazing

Play-Offs – Should be the target

7th-8th - Unlucky, win it next year

9th -12th - Disappointing

Below 12th – Very very poor

Since then we have signed Lambert, Hammond, Jaidi ect ect so feel that top 6 is more than achievable. The start we had hasn’t helped, but this league is really poor and a nice run of results will put us right up there.

AP wanted top 2 and im sure this is still his target. Id be happy with playoffs
