Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 30 September, 2009 Share Posted 30 September, 2009 After reading some very good press about King Monkey's new album I had high hopes. Sadly it doesn't live up to expectation. It's just another Ian Brown album and offers nothing new. I realise that some people don't want change and will be happy to get another record from him, but this is a major disappointment. One review I read suggested that whilst he's making records as good as this then the Stone Roses will never reform. I'd love to meet that journalist and find out if they actually listened to the album before writing their review! There is nothing here that is anywhere near anything that the roses ever did. Lead single 'stelify' is probably the highlight of the record. The low point being the truly awful cover of 'In the year 2525' which has you reaching for the skip button immediately. If you want a good Ian Brown ablum then buy 'Music Of The Spheres' or 'Solarized'.
Baj Posted 30 September, 2009 Share Posted 30 September, 2009 There is nothing here that is anywhere near anything that the roses ever did. I think the journo's point was whilst he's making good music by himself, there's no need to for him to reform the roses in desperation, not that Ian Browns music is as good as the roses, which it never has been. scott_saints Posted 30 September, 2009 Share Posted 30 September, 2009 If he wasn't in the Roses, then not many people would buy his records. This is because they are, well, average. And I'm a big Roses fan.
Ewell Posted 5 October, 2009 Share Posted 5 October, 2009 I am not going to defend Ian Brown as to be honest there is no point. You either love him or hate him and whatever I say is not going to change people's opinions on him. I love The Roses and always will as it was the soundtrack of my teenage years. From my point of view I think with what limited talent he obviously has he has made some very good albums, some not so good but as yet not a great album. Some of his singles are different class and there is usually at least one gem on each LP. F.E.A.R. and Stellify to name just two! His new album is IMHO on a couple of plays pretty good but then again what do I know!
Block 5 Posted 5 October, 2009 Share Posted 5 October, 2009 Not of fan of Ian Brown but I quite liked his work with UNKLE. My mate has persuaded me to go see him in Bournemouth, I shall go with an open mind.
