Ok I will say it. Papa was god awful

Typical over-reactionary post. "God awful" is an utterly ridiculous description of his performance.

One thing's for sure, he looks better up front that wide right, as he drifted out of the game far too much when playing on the right. That said, he scored a goal (I also thought it was already in but you've got to give him credit for beating two defenders to the ball to make sure) and he had a great bit of play down the right to set up Schneiderlin, who I can't believe didn't score.

There were a couple of opportunities when he was caught offside when I actually blamed the midfield for taking 2 or 3 touches before playing him in, where he was anticipating an early ball. Although the 2 or 3 times he was caught offside just before being subbed looked to me as if he was completely knackered. To be expected I suppose with his lack of games of late.

It wasn't a polished performance for sure. but there's certainly enough there to suggest he'll settle in, get better, and provide us with a dimension we currently don't have. "God awful", he most definitely isn't.

I thought he was pants, but has potential to make it work. I've already posted on here that for him to be a success he'll need to 1) Close down defenders 2) Learn to head a ball and 3) Learn the offside trap.

I thought what you did about the midfield, but that was in the previous home match when he was attacking the Chapel for the last 20 minutes - got a good look at him in front of the Northam on Tuesday, and he was NEVER on-side, and it wouldn't have mattered if the passes were first time or 5 seconds late, as he was never the right side of the last defender.

Oh, and he definitely didn't score, the lino had already flagged for Lambert's header being in.

However, plenty of time for him to adapt, can't judge a guy on one performance when he barely knows the country, never mind the team.

Does anyone remember when Kenwyne Jones came on against pompey and played on the wing he looked like he had never played before! So lets hope this guy comes good!

I'm not sure he ever had played on the right wing before. Well, except against Birmingham at St Andrews...

It wasn't ALWAYS a case of him wandering offside.

The majority of time times he was caught were when he had made a springing run from the midfield and our players had not been quick enough to supply him with the balls he deserves.

Give him a week or two to catch up with the speed of the English game and for the rest of the team to learn when to pass to him and we will have a quality striker on our hands.

I seem to recall questioning other poster's hastened glorifying of Waigo before he had even played for us. Shock, horror: he isn't a world class striker! Having seen him against Gillingham he doesn't seem the most skillful player in the world but he is certainly spritely; much better than Paterson or any of our other 'wingers'. I thought he got better today as the game progressed. A decent member of the squad who will score a fair few and make a few assists this season.

Anyone get a decent view of the offside when Hammond broke in the 2nd half and knocked it to Papa who looked like he would have scored? Seemed harsh..[/QUOTl

we were almost in line, and he looked easily level. People round me went bonkers at the lino.

a player who will frustrate and thrill.I would play him every time as he will create something from nothing.Papa well done

I would too as he keeps 2 or 3 defenders busy and occupied he is an outlet that we haven't had to use his pace.

Did you hear 'Mills?' on Radio Solent who said he was rubbish and should be sent packing? I wonder if any other club has as many numpties at football fans as we do.

I did I wanted to phone up and say my piece.@show him the Waigo to go home' I think was the fools quote. He did some delightful stuff.Id like to see his goal as it was a bit obscured but it seemed he may have done something sublime to score.

Papa will soon be having 2 defenders on him at all time and this will mean that there are less defenders to mark Lallana and Lambert, which will mean goals from them. Thought the 3 upfront worked very well today. IMHO the only slightly weak link today was James, can not wait till Murty is back.

similar in his unorthodox manner to Wanchope.

Thats exactly what I said today...he is so gangly and awkward he confuses defenders who dont know which way he is going to go....nor does he to be honest ;-)

I think he might turn out to be a bit of a Wanchope (I mean this in a good way!!!).

He strikes me as someone who perhaps plays on instinct and doesn't know what he's going to do half the time; and if he doesn't the opposition defenders sure as hell won't either!!

I am going to make myself unpopular now - I remain very unconvinced about Waigo. Unorthadox is not the word he really does not have a football brain and unforgiveably he bottled a couple of challenges today. I can understand why everyone wants him to do well because he is different, unpredictable and very watchable but I will be very surprised if he is still in our first team a year from now.

Sorry.

To be fair I didn't see him bottle anything; I actually thought he got stuck in at times.

And have you seen the size of his legs?!

I'm not slating him but two negative points today;

1: His touch is AWFUL at the moment and really needs to adjust to the game at this level.

2: Pace? Really? Gillingham defenders murdered him for pace on more than one opportunity. About six of us in the Northam laughed at his apparent 'pace' (or lack of!)

However, there were some bright points to his play, very similar to a yound Nathan Dyer at times once he had the ball at his feet. One moment in the second half in the Kingsland/Chapel corner in particular when he lifted the ball inbetween two defenders and then produced awful final ball after awful final ball!

Cripes if thats not slating him I dread to think what is....no pace. dreadful touch, not up to the pace of the game, wasted passes, no final ball.

Yet you omit the fact he scored again, kept their defence busy all game, the mazy run that beat 3 defenders that nearly led to a goal...go and look for some positives they are their if you try hard enough.

There is no way we would have scored our third goal without his pace, he won the hoof out of defence laid it off and the from the cross Lallana beat his man and scored.

His pace was significant in much of our play today, but most importantly with this goal which gave us a the two goal cushion which finished off the game for us.

He may not be a world beater but he will cause plenty of trouble to opposing sides in this league if he keeps playing like he did today

He did not "score again" - the Rovers goal has officially been given to Lambert and it was 2 men he beat on that run - other than that your post has been noted.

I think we need to remember we're in League 1; yes LEAGUE 1!!!

No, Papa is not a world beater; if he was then he would never have come to us would he?!

He is a half-decent winger/forward who has a bit of the Wanchopes about him, and I think he'll fluctuate from being either really good or really bad.

And I agree he's maybe not as fast as I expected either, but I think he'll prove to be an asset for us in this division.

Bugger me thats a bit pedantic isn't it...it was 3 as he beat the keeper as well ;-)

Don't get me wrong he is not the finished article in a long shot but he is different to anything we have.

I can't understand why the Northam chant for Saga when Papa has had more attempts at goal in his couple of games and looked far more dangerous.

I thought he beat 3 not counting the keeper. We are a L1 team and expecting to have an accomplished player on loan from a CL club..,,,,amusing

He's extremely quick - not in that busy sprinters way but in a loping, massive stride way. Their LB was no slouch today but Papa's pace gave him some problems.

I like Papa and think he did well today, but he still hasn't scored yet! Today's was a clear own goal, wait until you see the tv replays. But to be fair to him he had to get into that position and if the defender hadn't made the challenge Waigo would have had a shot on goal, so not taking anything away from Papa.

He started a little slowly today but improved greatly as the game went on. He can't cross, but that's okay because I'm not convinced he's a winger anyway, so the sooner we play him upfront the better. Although saying that, in the second half he did beat his man a few times and got into the box, almost setting up a goal on one occasion.

He'll be good for us there's not doubt about that - and what a moronic thread title by the way.

Saw the highlights on SSN. They only showed it once but it's clear that it was an OG, but obviously only clear if you saw it at the time because the tv are still giving it to Papa!

Didn't cross my mind at the time, but having seen it a few times since on the telly it definitely looked like an OG.

At least we got to see the dance again I guess, and all good strikers should claim everything!

Saints highlights on just after 45 mins on The Football League Show by the way; we actually got a couple of minutes for a change, showed 3 or 4 chances in addition to the goals.

Give Papa time to be shaped into a team player by Pards and then judge him in 6 months. AP has already managed to work out where Lallana should play - the first big Southampton mystery to resolve - now let him mould Papa.

3 goals so far? He's contributing already anyway.

Reminds me a bit of Rory Delap... 'sometimes he's good, sometimes he's crap' ! :)

Really looks like an own goal yesterday on the highlights!

Hope he comes good though.

Regardless, he's got to be in that position to force the own goal. Bugs me that because it's given as an OG that suddenly he is deprived of any credit.

His pace got him into a dangerous position, the defender panicked and put through his own net.

The BBC website has it down as Papa's goal BTW.

Oh and in all seriousness if Papa forces a few more own goals but doesn't score at all, then he's still making a valuable contribution to the team.

No idea what he was like yesterday, but harping back to the offside thing.

On Tuesday when he moved into the centre, there were at least two occassions where he looked up, saw a Saints player moving forward with the ball and went off on a run.

On both occassions, he stopped, turned round and still the ball had not been passed to him. That was not him being unaware of the offside rule, that was other players not understanding the fact that he could run onto a ball over the top.

Our one touch style means it will take some time for the others to work out that occassionally the quicker 15-20 yard pass into space making a CB or FB turn is far more productive than another 6 one touches to achieve the same field position.

FWIW once he settles in I think he will be a perfect L1 player, inconsistent but with enough moments to be a positive in the side, make the most of it, he'll turn up somewhere on a thread in 5 years time having terrorised Chelsea or Man U somewhere having gone around on loans and ending up somewhere in Eastern Europe or "Arry's latest team"
