Wade Garrett Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 A succesful club is not made over night, it takes time. Is 10 games enough time? No it isn't. 15-20 games is though.
Professor Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Is it true Pardew has a great squad and just needs to get them to perform? Some of the squad are excellent players, but isn't the problem that the rest are much the same as each other. Davis, Jaidi, Harding, Hammond, Lambert pick themselves but the other six places get filled by players who are not that good and as a result the manager tries different combinations almost every game. Give him better players and Pardew would do OK but with too many average players he seems to be struggling. Personally, I don't think changing the manager would make much difference, but if the wins don't come I think he will go as that is the way of football.
Lumypie Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 I read this site on a daily basis but rarely post but today i have had enough, I have been to all but 1 home game this season and compared to the millwall game there is a marked improvement in the fitness (still a little bit more needed but considering lack of pre-season they are getting there). The defense looks far more solid (we wont come up against 2 faster or mobile strikers than Rovers front 2 all season) and we are starting to play much better football (thought that was one of the best games i have seen in ages last night regardless of the result) So even though we lost, to a wonder goal, i came away feeling quite positive, logged on here and read complete rubbish written by people who werent even at the game Grrrr!!!!
a1ex2001 Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Parew has one of if not the most expensive squad in the league and even if you ignore the points deduction we are showing all the form of relegation candidates, say what you like about lack of pre season and the -10 hanging round our necks but put quite simply we have not been good enough one lucky win all season is all he has produced. He continues to overlook Holmes and Gillett in favour of Mills, Mellis and Wotton which but simply is stupid when everyone can see who the better players are, substitutions last night were a joke. Face it people we are deep in a relegation battle and we need change now.
brett24 Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 I really believe as soon as we get out of the negative points, we will go on a winning run. I think Saturday will be the start of the run, can see us getting 3 points against the Gills. If we have only picked up one more win in the next 5 games, then I may change my mind about replacing Pardew, at the moment we need to stick with him.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Were you at those games?? Yes, I was there against Yeovil and whilst we had more possession, it took 2 penalties to beat them plus they worked our keeper more IMO. Not there against Carlisle, but a close mate was and his view was that, apart from Mellis' chance, there wasn't a lot of threat again despite the possession.
corky morris Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 I think its fair to start judging a manager after 10 games. The facts are we have won 9 points out of 30 & that is not good enough. I dont want him fired, but he & the players have to take a look at themselves & say are we doing all we can? I dont think they are! Pardew has forgotten about Holmes & Gillet which is a mistake IMHO, but i dont believe either to be a world beater - simply better than the players that are given chances week after week.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Frank Drebin Alan Pardew My immediate thought after the game. Currently talking a very good game; shame his team aren't playing any good ones. Lucky to beat Yeovil, lucky to nick a point against Carlisle and got what we deserved tonight. Don't get me wrong, I really want Pardew to succeed but the doubts are ever growing in mind... "Can you describe him?" "Brown hair, slim, moustache, 'bout 5 foot 9". "My god, that's a mighty big moustache."
Give it to Ron Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Parew has one of if not the most expensive squad in the league and even if you ignore the points deduction we are showing all the form of relegation candidates, say what you like about lack of pre season and the -10 hanging round our necks but put quite simply we have not been good enough one lucky win all season is all he has produced. Replaced by? so if he does not work after 10 games then sack him.....then another manager 10 games and sack him......4 managers a season again then...great stuff.
oggiee Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 amen to that, the usual sack them after 2 games brigade will never change. just let them have their rant . Fortunately he will not be sacked, those who run the club know better and thankfully don't have the IQ of an ant. Yep, win at the weekend and everyone will be saying how the playoffs arenow the minimum :-D
RedAndWhite91 Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Replaced by? so if he does not work after 10 games then sack him.....then another manager 10 games and sack him......4 managers a season again then...great stuff. If we do that we might as well get Lowe back in as Chairman. That's the sort of thing he liked to do, and look where that got us.
SnailOB Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 i posted the other week and stated i was nervous had a bit of a debate with ST Marco on this issue Also confirmed i liked the work that had been done with the club so far and was not calling for Pardews head. That said - couple of games later and i'm still nervous Not convinced with performances at the moment and the results quite frankly do speak for themselves. The time for excuses (no pre season, new players etc... etc..) is over. The little intricate football being played at times shows that the players ARE getting used to playing with one another but sometimes this tippy-tappy football is over done. As a football fan i never thought i'd hear myself say this but i think at times we need to play more direct football. Other posts have moaned about offsides for Waigo but how many times has that 'killer' ball been delayed ? When was the last time we actually saw a saints player run into space at teams with 10-15yd gap between player and 18yd box ? Everyone else seems to do it against us. We seem to want to walk the ball into the box/back of the net - no wonder Lambert isn't scoring and looks ****ed off (and some posters class this as a lack of commitment !!) IMO We cannot support Spiderman and Adam in same side Full backs can't tackle (really fed up with the back-tracking, hands out by the side crap we are seeing - someone stick a tackle in by the half way line for crying out loud.) Crossing is still poor Corners are worse If we can't sort this out then we will not see much marked improvement. This is league one and just relying on pretty footbal will not win us games - didn't we say the same thing about the dutch experiment ? Lets remember - only win so far has been from 2 penalties (both somewhat debatable) Yes, progress is being made BUT results are not forthcoming. Do i want Pardew out today - NO Am i STILL nervous - Definitely What should we do - I don't know i'm not the manager, Pardew is so lets hope he has some pretty damn good ideas - and soon.
Chez Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Think about how we played last season, think really hard about how awful we looked game after game after game. Do you really think we have moved on very little from that? ......Honestly? I'm not overly happy with the results we're getting, but I've seen some good things so far this season. There's been little spells (true only little), but there's been little spells of passing the ball about, that in my opinion have been some of the best passing we've seen by a saints team for a few years now. I am worried, but I still think it's a confidence thing the team need to get past. I still think Pardew is the man to sort us out. the side now reminds me exactly of the side JP put out. We passed teams to death but lacked a real cutting edge and then were often caught on the break, especially exposed down the wings. The passing from JPs side in the first half of last season was JUST AS good as we saw last night. I don't want to think about how bad it got later on (under JP) and then under Wotte and I pray we don't have to watch **** like that again for a long long time.
nick1579 Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Good post Snail. I think (and always have done) that the role of the manager is overstated. It's the 11 men on the pitch that decide the result. Finally someone has pinpointed a few problems with the FOOTBALL, not the manager.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Good post Snail. I think (and always have done) that the role of the manager is overstated. It's the 11 men on the pitch that decide the result. Finally someone has pinpointed a few problems with the FOOTBALL, not the manager. I agree with that. My Mum always said "Why are they just blaming the manager, he's not out on the pitch playing the football". I think players hold a lot of responsibility when times are bad for a club. This is generic by the way, I'm not slating our players here.
St Will Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 I agree with that. My Mum always said "Why are they just blaming the manager, he's not out on the pitch playing the football". I think players hold a lot of responsibility when times are bad for a club. This is generic by the way, I'm not slating our players here. You're absolutely correct (or your mum is). As sportsmen, the players will benefit more if they take responsibility. By doing so, it gives them more of an opportunity to learn. I'm sure that's what they're doing anyway.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 You're absolutely correct (or your mum is). As sportsmen, the players will benefit more if they take responsibility. By doing so, it gives them more of an opportunity to learn. I'm sure that's what they're doing anyway. It also takes pressure away from the manager if they take responsibility. And yeah, although last night was horrific with Bristol's last minute winner, I hope it hit the players hard and makes them realise that it is their responsibility to win games, to take chances, to defend well etc etc.
a1ex2001 Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Replaced by? so if he does not work after 10 games then sack him.....then another manager 10 games and sack him......4 managers a season again then...great stuff. Why 4 managers a season? I wouldn't want to sack one that was getting us points? Blindly standing by a manager who thinks Wotton is better than Gillett and Mellis and Mills better than Holmes is ridiculous. The team are badly setup, poorly prepared and his substitutions are laughable. 9 points from 10 games is relegation form in any league even when you start level with everyone else!
Legod Third Coming Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Who would have stuck with Phil Parkinson, or Curbishley, or Lawrie. I still think that you cannot judge a manager after ten games. 15 maybe!
david in sweden Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 (edited) I honestly cannot believe the number of people starting to call for Pardew to go! How many managers in the last 10 years? and where did it get us? FFS I know it's not great at the moment but I really don't get why do so many people think change will automatically make everything better? We can't just keep scrabbling around changing manager twice a season, sooner or later you have to give a manager a chance to build a proper team. Changing managers isn't the answer. Last season we were down to ONLY two., which was an improvement on the seasons before when it was 3 or 4 changes... every season. Where do these impatient people come from ? A brand new team (well almost) and someone out there expects us to be pushing for play-off places already. We are not Premier League anymore and looking to change the manager before Nov. 5th. My goodness .. if only some of these people had been around in the distant past. Ted Bates (God rest his soul).. .and Lawrie Mac (thanks for 1976 LM ) had some pretty disasterous seasons between them, but fans weren't looking to oust them every few months. I can recall one " fan " (at The Dell) who'd regularly call for McMenemy's sacking every time we had a poor result ...( and there were a few of those,) BUT when LM did go ( to Sunderland) ..this " fan" was the first one to call him a traitor for leaving the club ! You can't please some people ! With a -10 points start and a brand new line-up... I'm giving AP my support as long as we stay in this division. Edited 30 September, 2009 by david in sweden
SnailOB Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 With a -10 points start and a brand new line-up... I'm giving AP my support as long as we stay in this division. so basically you have limitations as well then
david in sweden Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Football is about results, and what results have we achieved under Pardew?? 1 win in 10?? OK, I know all the excuses, but at some point the excuses lose their power, and responsibility has to be taken. It's just a question of when that point comes. Tbf, I was never in favour of Pardew. I've always thought he was overrated as a manager. I hated the way he forced his way out at Reading to go to West Ham: disloyal in the extreme. I thought he underachieved at West Ham: with superior resources to any other club in the CCC he just barely backed into promotion via the playoffs. And West Ham did nothing impressive under him in the Prem, until he was forced out. His period at Charlton was obviously disastrous. I was not at all in favor of him being appointed here. That said, since he's here, I support him. He's made some very good signings, without question. The problem is, with those good signings, and an excellent squad -- arguably one of the best 2 or 3 squads, on paper, in L1 at this point -- why are we still drawing or losing games? Why can we not win? Why can we not score more goals? Why can we not put together a complete game, of 95 minutes of focused, sound football? At what point do we say that it just is not working, that Pardew isn't the right man, that it's time to change while we still have enough games for a new man to turn things around? I'll say, we aren't at that point yet. I'm still backing Pardew to get it done. But I'll also say we are not far from that point. If we don't start winning winnable games within the next few weeks, and showing real progress (progress in terms of results and points that is; not progress of the "well, we played quite well in the first half" variety to excuse another dreary loss or snore draw) -- well, it'll be time for Pardew to go for sure. I'd say end of October is the limit ... Got someone else lined up - have you ? Let Marcus Liebherr know ASAP and he'll give you a blank cheque I'm sure. ...and how many new players do you expect the NEXT manager to buy in ...and how long will it take them to settle in..? ....I really can't believe I'm reading some of these criticisms ! Has anyone spoken to a Pompey fan recently ...btw ?
dune Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Alan Pardew should be getting the results our spending on players warrants by now. I'm losing patience because for all the talk he's not delivering. If we're still in the relegation zone at Christmas he's got to go, but for now we've got to stick with it.
RinNY Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Got someone else lined up - have you ? Has anyone spoken to a Pompey fan recently ...btw ? Stupid response, truly stupid. So stupid, I can't believe I'm bothering to reply to it, but ... A decent new manager shouldn't need to buy lots of players: there are good players here, and good managers win games with good players: that's why many are disappointed with Pardew so far, he has good players but can't get them to win. No I don't have someone else lined up: how could I? I guess your position will be to just watch us turning possible wins into draws, and possible draws into defeats, as we have been doing for 5 years now and are STILL doing under Pardew, until we're playing Eastleigh home & away each season, eh? I haven't called for Pardew out. I'm simply pointing out that his results have been abysmal so far: forget the -10 points, we're playing relegation football regardless. He has had plenty of time by now to instill his methods and a winning mentality. If results don't improve over the next month, how much longer after that can we watch ourselves sink deeper and deeper into another relegation hole? Got an answer to that, or will you just refer to Pompey again?
Window Cleaner Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 the only argument from the apologists seems to be "but it will get better and you can't KNOW that it won't" Its kind of like the argument for the existence of god - "you can't disprove what i'm saying so therefore it has 50/50 credence with what you're saying" Dogma is the name of the game.

VectisSaint Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 What do you suggest? I suggest we replace Pardew now with Roy Keane. Then when that doesn't work lets bring in Paul Hart. Then we could try Wotte or Gray or Wigley, surely by the end of the season one of these will have discovered how to make Saints win. FFS, we need to stick with Pardew, I don't believe for 1 minute he will take us down, but I would even suggest sticking with him if he did. Promotion was not an option this season, next season is the important one. Some people need to learn a new word, FAITH.

sperm_john Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 im gonna stick my neck on the block and say, i actually dont think its gonna work with pards .. just imo
The Rover Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Replaced by? so if he does not work after 10 games then sack him.....then another manager 10 games and sack him......4 managers a season again then...great stuff. We could do it like the Beeb with Have I Got News For You and have a guest manager every week. Seriously I can't believe the fickleness of some of the posters on here (well I can actually). It's going to be a long hard season and with a bit of luck we'll end mid table with a stable team who are ready to make a challenge for promotion next time round. Those who have been going to the games will know that we are improving every week. Last night's game was very enjoyable; it's just a pity that it went Rovers way when they put Williams on. FWIW I think we'll struggle to beat a strong Gillingham side on Saturday but I'm still backing Pardew to get it right for us.
alpine_saint Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 im gonna stick my neck on the block and say, i actually dont think its gonna work with pards .. just imo Bit strong for me, but I reckon it aint looking too bright at the moment. Playing Melis on the left last night was like giving Leon Best the first peno in a playoffs semi-final, imo..
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 FFS, we need to stick with Pardew, I don't believe for 1 minute he will take us down, but I would even suggest sticking with him if he did. You talk about belief and faith as if Alan Pardew's appointment was akin to the second coming of Christ , personally I prefer the more prosaic qualities of responsibility and accountability . Reading the above there appears to be no amount of on the field failure you're not prepared to tolerate . If we were to lose every game between now and kingdom come that'll be fine with you as long as we keep the faith in Alan Pardew because everything will turn out all right in the end ....... I can't think of any other walk of like (the Civil Service excepted) where that point of view would be acceptable or even practicable . I can assure you if I failed to do my job in a timely and efficient manner I'd be out of the door before you could say "Saints failed to hold onto a lead" and I'd wouldn't have much cause for complaint . I see no good reason why any football manager should be regarded as above criticism or somehow immune from the consequences of failure , they get paid a lot of money - they have to deliver the goods .
eurosaint Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 I have a question for those who think that 10 games is enough time to be successful and not be sacked for lack of results : When you appoint a quality new manager to replace the outgoing one, what length of contract would you offer him ???
RinNY Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Yes, a decent manager should be able to take our worst team in f*ck knows how many decades and get them winning easily. If, in terms of the players available, they really are our worst team in decades -- which is debatable given last year's team -- that is entirely understandable and appropriate, since we are in third division for the first time in decades. Rather than comparing this team to the teams we had in past decades, when we were in the Prem or at worst the 2nd division, we might want to compare it with the other 3rd division teams, against whom they actually have to play. If on that basis you still think it's an awful team (I think it should be an excellent team in this division, on paper), then all the more reason to critique Pardew since at this point he has signed most of them. Strewth!
Legod Third Coming Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 I have a question for those who think that 10 games is enough time to be successful and not be sacked for lack of results : When you appoint a quality new manager to replace the outgoing one, what length of contract would you offer him ??? 9 games. Simples.

If results don't improve over the next month, how much longer after that can we watch ourselves sink deeper and deeper into another relegation hole? Got an answer to that, or will you just refer to Pompey again? Well, I'm just as disappointed as everyone else that were not doing better. I've been a fan for over 50 years and seen bad times before, and this doesn't feel any better. You said you haven't called for AP to go..you then go on to say that you'll give him until of October. I was wondering if you meant it because you also say in your opening para. that you don't like him (past history etc)! A bit biased perhaps? Most people seem to think that Jaidi and Papa Weigo are valuable additions, but Jaidi has played only 3 games (1 goal) and Papa W. had his first full game yesterday - and scored. Not really a lot of time to turn it all around, and YES.... AP still hasn't got it right yet either, but I like him better than any manager we've had in the last 4/5 years. People on this site have stated that Rovers were the best side we've faced this season, I think that it can't be ignored. Half of the teams we've played already are better organised than we are, and some are in the top 6. (I'm disappointed that we don't have a big striker, but with John and Rasiak deciding to go, it'll be hard to persuade a good striker to drop to L1 for us. Lambert still looks a good buy and laid on both goals last night...not so bad.?) We have to take one game at a time, but if things haven't turned around by the end of October - I'm sure M. Liebherr will be looking at his options - after all it is his money that's kept us alive in the first place....I can't recall the last time we had a good start to any season ...no matter which division, or manager we had... I've learned patience and its still a long way to the end of April. (No more mentions of Po*pey, but it's one of the few joys in life at present !)
RedAndWhite91 Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 If we lose on Saturday, get rid IMO And who do you suggest we get in to replace him?
St Will Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 And who do you suggest we get in to replace him? Alpine.......through a new and innovative webcam coaching system.
John B Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 And who do you suggest we get in to replace him? Steve Coppell probably the first choice anyway
saint_stevo Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 And who do you suggest we get in to replace him? Coppell/WGS/Hoddle/Curbs........? Probably Coppell most likely
St Will Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Coppell/WGS/Hoddle/Curbs........? Probably Coppell most likely OK, let's just say that happens, and they get 9 points in their first 10 games. Then what?
saint_stevo Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Alpine.......through a new and innovative webcam coaching system. Not sure he would have done much worse in those first 10 games....
saint_stevo Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 OK, let's just say that happens, and they get 9 points in their first 10 games. Then what? Lets say we lose the next 3 with AP........Stick with him?
St Will Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Stevo, I think you're being a bit irrational to be fair. No disrespect.
St Will Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Lets say we lose the next 3 with AP........Stick with him? Answer the question....come on, if the next guy comes in and we get 9 points from 10 games, what next. Really. What next?
John B Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 OK, let's just say that happens, and they get 9 points in their first 10 games. Then what? Plan for life in League 2 I would have thought and recruit Sol because he will like our training facilities
saint_stevo Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Stevo, I think you're being a bit irrational to be fair. No disrespect. None taken. It's my opinion. It's just not good enough at the moment, whether we were 'excellent for 70mins' etc last night 9pts from 10 games is very very poor
RedAndWhite91 Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 OK, let's just say that happens, and they get 9 points in their first 10 games. Then what? Lets say we lose the next 3 with AP........Stick with him? saint_stevo answer the question! Don't ask another one!
saint_stevo Posted 30 September, 2009 Posted 30 September, 2009 Answer the question....come on, if the next guy comes in and we get 9 points from 10 games, what next. Really. What next? Well the new manager would obviously not have had a pre-season, would need a transfer window to bring in his own players, and need time to adapt to league 1.........
