***Big Ron Davies Update***

Any further news Tim?

Yes!! And thanks for asking Stinky: Things have taken a very slight upward turn, Chris is a bit more Compos Mentis today, she is telling Big Ron to "shut up", which is more normal behaviour.

However, she is still confined to bed, cannot even walk to the bathroom and is not eating. At this stage there is no way she can leave the urgent critical care at the hospital.

She is very weak, the quacks maintain that she MUST start to self feed and also actually show more will to...well you get my drift.

All the messages continue to be conveyed to this great Saints servant, so genuine thanks everyone. The one REALLY good thing is that Ron is coping better and a bit more positive and upbeat - the love is helping.

I'll give you more news as I get it

  • 3 weeks later...

As many of you know I have worked hand in glove with my friend and ex-idol to many of us, the one and only, incomparable Big Ron Davies.

When I returned from the UK this Wednesday morning Ron had left numerous voice-mails for me to call him, as had his friend (also called Ron). I duly obliged, however due to torrential rain in the Albuquerque area the phones were down.

This morning I finally got hold of Ron only to be informed the tragic news that Ron's dearly beloved wife, my friend Chris had succumbed to her illness and past on Sunday. After a long struggle Chris had fallen foul to kidney and liver failure (renal failure). Chris had spoken to us for a while of wanting to join her 'mom', who had also past quite a time ago, this was actually fairly comforting to Ron.

So please spare a thought for Big Ron, he thrilled and excited us. He scored against the very top defenders in twos and threes, sometimes even fours. He rose majestically at the far post burying ball, centre-back and sometimes even an odd goalie and he did it in a red and white striped shirt with a big number 9 on the back.

While we had had Ron, we had faith and belief, it was possible for us to beat anyone, literally anyone and anywhere too. We sang about him, marvelled at him and damn well appreciated him...like I said spare a thought for this fine, humble man now. Widowed too young, half crippled through a life of carrying one if not two defenders on his back for the cause of Southampton Football Club and it's fans. He sits in his trailer home, with two cats for company in the most modest of surroundings.

He calls you his Southampton 'friends' rather than 'fans' and despite being a long way off perfect, Ron certainly casts a finer and prouder shadow than many a player in today's football world.

I will make my business to pass on any respectful messages you may have for Ron

Sh*t Tim, this is bad news indeed!

She was Ron's bedrock, he worshipped her.

I sat next to her at the Ted Bates, Dell Diamond launch dinner and I have never seen anyone so gobsmacked at suddenly finding out her partner was so revered. As the evening wore on her jaw got lower and lower in sheer disbelief as our table was literally beseiged with fans. I told her Ron was the Joe D'Maggio of Southampton and then, suddenly it dawned. Her partner WAS a living legend - at least in these parts!!

I also told her Ron had been voted the best looking footballer in Football league Review mag (used to be included in most programmes in those days), beating George Best into second place and she gave me one of "those" looks as if to say "Now I know you are kidding me".

I am really worried Ron might not want to survive her departure - you have done a great job so far, but you might need to do a bit more. You know you have the support of the "Give It To Ron" committee.

Please send Ron my personal regards and tell him to hang in there, something he once was very good at!

I can only echo FF's comments. I had an inkling how much Ron needed Chris, and it now worries me also how Ron will get on without her. Indeed, GITR supports any positive action you can bring about Tim.

RIP Chris.

My sincerest condolences to Ron, he gave me some of the greatest pleasure and thrills I have ever had watching the Mighty Saints, he can be sure that his freinds will be there for him if he needs us.

I holeheartedly endorse this. Everyone in football knew Ron was the best header of a football in the world, possibly the best there's ever been, but I remember that 6-2 Villa game with big Ron scoring crackers with his feet.

Ron you are are such a hero to many of us fiftysomethings who watched you in our youths. Please accept my sincerest condolences.

I am truly gutted Ron to learn your sad news and tragic loss of Chris. We all know just how much she has meant to you all these years. Rest in peace Chris. May the Lord bless you, keep you and make His Light to shine upon you forever.

Sincerest condolances to you Ron, to all your family and loved ones. Remember, you are not alone. We Saints supporters hold a place most dear in all our hearts and we want you to know at this terrible time, that there is a home waiting here for you forever.

Poor Ron. Such sad news. Has he got any family out in the States to help him through this, or close friends? At least he will have the NHS to help him with his own health problems if he comes back here.

My first football memories are watching Ron and Terry Paine - they got me into this life-long addiction (is that good or bad???)

Oh dear Lord, how tragically sad for Ron. TT, again thanks for sharing this with us so eloquently and sadly.

As a fan my thoughts are of course with him at this time, as a human, I now worry for him, things could be very difficult in the coming weeks and he will need his friends to be there for him.

I know it is completely off the cuff and unusual, but with the interest in this story and the depth of feeling, could it be at all possible to ask if the "new" club and the local Media could help out and put together a benefit game.

Money is not going to help him now, but the thought of years ahead with only the cats for company in his trailer saddens me almost as much as any loss he will feel now.

Surely enough people remember him and could be bothered to help to at least give him somewhere where his memories are not so "claustrophobic".

Best Wishes Ron, it may seem unfair today, but the Man upstairs has kept you here for a reason, find it and use it.

RIP Chris and may you find your mum

Ron,

never had the pleasure to watch you due to my age but it's clear you are a true club legend and those can only be counted on one hand IMHO.

My sincere condolences to you at this difficult time, you are in the hearts & thoughts of saints fans everywhere.

Ron,

I'm so gutted for you. I know your world has fallen apart, but it's now you need your friends. Know that you have them in their thousands back here who will help in any way they can. I know you're a humble yet proud man, but please accept our support - that's what friends are for.

Maybe under the new regime someone from this site (maybe FF) could write a letter to Marcus Liebher describing this Legend of a man and what he meant to so many of us and just maybe some sort of testamonial could be arranged.

The Welsh Wizard

Can remember seeing you and Tommy Traynor walking in Shirley Road when I was a nipper Ron,that was how it was in those days you were our heros but very much part of the community, I must have knocked at your digs a dozen times to get your autograph if you were in you never said No, times have changed mate but your Legend will live forever that famous day at Old Trafford will see to that,I know it probably is too painful at the moment but try to think of some of those great days if things get too dark, hope to see you at St Marys again soon. God Bless and take care.
