SaintDonkey Posted 24 September, 2009 Posted 24 September, 2009 (edited) Trinidad and Tobago lost thei first game (no great surprise) but Jake at least set up their consolation goal (and got himself in the book). "Egypt could have doubled their advantage five minutes later, but Samuel made a fantastic flying save to deny Talaat at close range. T&T then broke quickly through Jake Thomson down the right hand side. The Southampton man cut inside, beating several Egyptian defenders in the process, and slipped a ball into the path of Rochford, who finished well. " http://www.fifa.com/u20worldcup/matches/round=253217/match=300090182/summary.html Annoying that you can watch the games live for free on Fifa.com, but not in the UK. Anyone know a Norweigan proxy server? Edit: interview with Jake here Edited 24 September, 2009 by SaintDonkey adding interview link
planetcory Posted 24 September, 2009 Posted 24 September, 2009 Egypt were the better team, but they weren't 4-1 better. Flattering score. Thomson was TT's best player on the night.

Hatch Posted 24 September, 2009 Posted 24 September, 2009 He scored an own goal as well, off his backside.
Saintandy666 Posted 24 September, 2009 Posted 24 September, 2009 How late can you switch nationality and how many times?
Whitey Grandad Posted 24 September, 2009 Posted 24 September, 2009 How late can you switch nationality and how many times? I think it's something to do with competitive games, but I'm not sure.
Whitey Grandad Posted 24 September, 2009 Posted 24 September, 2009 How late can you switch nationality and how many times? madsent Posted 25 September, 2009 Posted 25 September, 2009 How late can you switch nationality and how many times? Once you've represented your country at full international level, that's it. You can't change your allegiance. There have been exceptions since that rule was brought in, notably when the USSR and Yugoslavia split into their constituent countries. That said, I'm still not entirely sure why the Ukranian members of the USSR team were allowed to play for Russia and why they would choose to. I'm also not certain what FIFA would do if another Tony Cascarino situation happened and it turned out that a player was not in any way entitled to play for a country they have already represented.
anothersaintinsouthsea Posted 25 September, 2009 Posted 25 September, 2009 This game was shown live on Eurosport. JT played pretty well, only caught the last 35 mins but his use of the ball was good and he put in several very dangerous crosses. He flagged a bit late on as he was basically a wing back on pretty much the only T&T player on the right. Eurosport commentators mentioned a few times that he was the best T&T player and his own goal was very unlucky - the king that makes you look stupid but not really anything you can do about it. On a different note, the pundit was Russel Osman and after they spoke about JT being a Saint he mentioned that he would soon be playing at a charity golf day at Stoneham in aid of Kevin Moore - didn't quite catch it clearly but I'm sure he said that Kevin had alzheimers! Does anyone know anymore about this? Surely he's too young.
krissyboy31 Posted 25 September, 2009 Posted 25 September, 2009 Maybe we should play him as the 'fox-in-the-box'? He was lethal from 2ft out!!!
ottery st mary Posted 25 September, 2009 Posted 25 September, 2009 Jake Thomson is a VERY good player and sooner than later will be a great player for The Saints...Critics seem to take great delight in putting down very talented players like Thomson, Lallana, Mills etc....Shame on them.....These three and several others coming through will be top class players as we move up through the leagues. Not forgetting Pato.
dellgirl Posted 25 September, 2009 Posted 25 September, 2009 Jake had a very good match and had his strikers been a little more active particularly in the last quarter the score would have been a lot closer. I have always liked him and am sure he will go on to be an excellent player for us . Well done Jake your club is behind you.
The9 Posted 25 September, 2009 Posted 25 September, 2009 Once you've represented your country at full international level, that's it. You can't change your allegiance. There have been exceptions since that rule was brought in, notably when the USSR and Yugoslavia split into their constituent countries. You were more or less right until about 5 years ago, and its changed twice since then, to the point where FIFA are considering allowing changes from pretty much anyone, at any time (though the World Cup seems to be a benchmark, not wanting anyone to play in successive ones for different nations). The links are above. The Ukrainians in the Russian team were given the option to "continue" to play for USSR/CIS/Russia (as they had already represented them and the Russian Federation was considered the dominant entity which inherited the USSR's record) or to play for their "nation". I would imagine the decision was taken based on the number of international tournaments they felt they'd get to play in based on what they were used to, for the likes of Kanchelskis. It was a fairly unique situation, I'm not sure any of the Slovaks in the Czechoslovakia/RCS teams stayed in the Czech side, and war prevented anything similar happening in Yugoslavia.
The9 Posted 25 September, 2009 Posted 25 September, 2009 Would anyone who watched the match be able to confirm that Jake is, in fact, very quick ? Just a little difference of opinion from on here last week...
ottery st mary Posted 25 September, 2009 Posted 25 September, 2009 Thommo was grease lightning and appears to be getting faster....Watch out The Bolt..Thommo is after you.
Give it to Ron Posted 25 September, 2009 Posted 25 September, 2009 Would anyone who watched the match be able to confirm that Jake is, in fact, very quick ? Just a little difference of opinion from on here last week... That is why I find him so frustrating, when he plays for the Ressies and not just against the likes of Salisbury but against other clubs decent players he has had some absolute blinders on the right wing. He has left some players standing with his pace - I have seen him beat 2 or 3 players get to the dead ball line and cross really well. When he gets in the first team he looks like a rabbit stuck in the headlights of an oncoming 40footer......nowhere near the same player. He just cant seem to make the transition to the next level yet.
krissyboy31 Posted 25 September, 2009 Posted 25 September, 2009 He just cant seem to make the transition to the next level yet. Hopefully this competition (and playing at that level) will give him the confidence to do so!!

Does anyone know anymore about this? Surely he's too young. I heard them mention this as well, I did know about this but only because it has been mentioned on this board a few times in the past. Anyways, Good Luck to Kevin and hope the Golf day and the future all turn out well.

Anyways, Good Luck to Kevin and hope the Golf day and the future all turn out well. I am sure it has been mentioned on here before that he was unwell. I remember a boxing Day game at The Dell against Coventry and we were 2 down.....we got one back and Moore came up with a bullet header for the equaliser. A very under rated player IMO.

He just cant seem to make the transition to the next level yet. Well, yeah, but does he gets SLOWER when he plays at a higher level ? Pace is one of those things that even parks players can have, you don't get slower *without* the ball just because there are better players around - anyway, my point was that some dullard last week actually thought he was slow, he's not. Played badly for the first team I can't disagree with, but losing his pace when he plays at St Mary's not Staplewood? Nah...
ottery st mary Posted 25 September, 2009 Posted 25 September, 2009 Pato is already at AC Milan. Agree about Thompson though, and I really like Mills, top quality. I could not remember the correct spelling for Paterson/Patterson and new I would get slated.....Our Pato is much better than the Milan wannabeeee. To be fair..I have always rated your football knowledge...You are a top Saints supporter and the best poster ..except for me and TDD.:smt070 The right young players with the mix of experience and the top coaching staff will lead us back to the top.....Next three games 9 points. COYRS.
planetcory Posted 11 October, 2009 Posted 11 October, 2009 Starting for the senior team against Costa Rica tonight.
