seems sadly ironic when liverpool fans storming juve fans resulted in helping bringing in fences/pens...then it was these fences that killed liverpool fans

Heysel didn't result in bringing in fences/pens, they were already at Hillsboro' when 10,000 Saints fans crammed in there in the '84 FA Cup Quarter Final. And the first fences went up at the Dell in '79 - which Spurs fans promptly peeled!

Yes, I'm pretty sure it was 1978. I'm not sure if there were fences when Millwall came to the Dell in Feb 1978 as there was a whole load of trouble but there were when Spurs came in May 1978 on the final day of the season.

As you rightly say though they weren't a whole lot of good since in spite of both teams being promoted the Spurs fans proceeded to tear them down.

It may even have been the Millwall game which prompted the fences as I remember my Dad and I leaving our normal spot on the Archers Rd terrace and going to stand under the West Stand, certainly don't recall climbing any fences to do so !
