chrisobee Posted 24 September, 2009 Share Posted 24 September, 2009 Surely not - I sincerely hope not anyway. At least Briggs is bowling now - and very economically. Sometimes i simply do not understand Dimi's bowling choices. I have raised exactly that point in several recent threads including the game v Worcs and Dimi insisted on bowling Ervine. John B Posted 24 September, 2009 Share Posted 24 September, 2009 Me too ! It is so easy to captain the side after the event Yorkshire used seamers most of the time
SO5 4BW Posted 24 September, 2009 Share Posted 24 September, 2009 Slightly off the topic of this particular match but what do people think about Dimi's captaincy in general? I think it's becoming obvious that he was the wrong appointment when Sir Shane left. He shows no sign of 'growing into the job' as I hoped he would, he's not got any obvious aptitude for captaincy, and there's his breaks for the IPL which don't exactly give the message of 100% commitment to the HCCC cause. Pothas is the obvious alternative - any others? This has been a fairly sucessful season - but I can't say that Dimi's captaincy has been a major factor! Leicestersaint Posted 24 September, 2009 Author Share Posted 24 September, 2009 Well I have a lot of time for Dimi - he has been a great servant and one of our best players - but I simply do not understand his reluctance to use the spinners more readily and to vary things when the opposition are making runs. Pothas seems to be a good captain when he gets the chance.
chrisobee Posted 24 September, 2009 Share Posted 24 September, 2009 It is so easy to captain the side after the event Yorkshire used seamers most of the time No, if you read my previous posts this is a point I have raised a lot recently. It's a slow pitch, Hants only got a wicket when Briggs bowled more than one over and Ervine who bowled long before Briggs not only went for a few but bowled several no balls as well. I repeat my comment above on the Worcs game that even allowing for the reluctance to use spin it makes no sense to bowl an all rounder ahead of a specialist bowler. Really what Yorks did has no bearing on what we do. Like Leicestersaint I think Dimi is a fantastic player for us but I'm not convinced as to his use of bowlers. Yes, but it is hard to captain a side when you are keeping wicket, the one player in the fielding side who really has to concentrate all of the time and is involved in the game more. I suggest it might be time next season to look at one of the younger players but I'll trust the Hants management to decide if they do that and if so who they choose. I don't blame him for playing in the IPL, he's hardly received the recognition ( and salary) he deserves from England and he only misses the 1st few weeks and at this stage in his career I think he is entitled to look towards his financial future. Some players are just natural captains, I don't think Dimi is one of them.

Headingley is a seamers pitch mind you if Tahir was playing he may have bowled a lot. The club is trying to bring Briggs on carefully
Leicestersaint Posted 25 September, 2009 Author Share Posted 25 September, 2009 From Cricinfo: The score at the interval was 49, and the imminent landmark was reached immediately afterwards, as Sayers cut the first ball, from Tomlinson, to the boundary. Runs then began to flow, helped by a disastrous spell from Sean Ervine, who went for 35 runs in four overs, liberally sprayed with a wide and four no-balls. Sayers hit both his first two deliveries to the boundary and almost caught Rudolph, although taking most of the bowling. Rudolph reached his 50 off 99 balls, and three deliveries later Sayers joined him, off 123. Just before five o'clock, the news came through that Sussex had been dismissed for 243, and Yorkshire's bacon had been saved for another season; this was the third year out of four that they had earned a last-minute reprieve from Death Row. The opening stand went on to record 162 runs, at which point Rudolph fell for 68 (Sayers then 69) when he mistimed a drive to mid-on off Danny Briggs. David Wainwright saw out the day, leaving Yorkshire in provisionally the better position overnight.

Window Cleaner Posted 25 September, 2009 Share Posted 25 September, 2009 A Hants style collapse ! Wickets shared amongst all the bowlers in the end! not really, they were 277-7 and we took our time in finishing them off as per usual. We need it to wiss down with rain in Manchester tomorrow or we'll drop a place and presumably a few quid.

I meant having been 209/1 it was rather a collapse, I think you'd expect well over 400 from there.
chrisobee Posted 26 September, 2009 Share Posted 26 September, 2009 (edited) Hants 145/2 at lunch. I guess there is a chance both captains might want to make a game of it and Hants set Yorks a run chase but I somehow doubt it even though in this situation Hampshire have the possibility of a big fourth-place payout in the Championship if they did achieve an outright victory. However, both teams achieved their aim to stay in CC1 and with the FP trophy win none too shabby a season at all. Already looking forward to next season with hopefully one or two additions plus the young players all having had some experience. Durham are the team of course who set the standard but no reason why we cannot step up a level, I'd love to win CC1 especially after 2005 !!!
