CB Saint Posted 21 September, 2009 Posted 21 September, 2009 In answer to the moaning minnies on here - some positives We unbeaten in the league for the last five games Only 5 teams have conceded less goals than us. Unbeaten at home in league How anyone complain about this is beyond me. Sure we need to sort out the attacking element of our game but good teams are built upon good foundations (ie defense). AP seems to have grasped this and is doing a good job so far.
trousers Posted 21 September, 2009 Posted 21 September, 2009 Any thoughts on why Steve McManaman was in the Directors Box as a Liebherr invited guest ? I won't believe it until I see Mister Neil's photograph....
Morph Posted 21 September, 2009 Posted 21 September, 2009 Wasn't that a direct question? I don't think it was meant as 'cryptic bollix' as you poetically put it. Correct, it was just a simple question. I have no idea why he was there. Regards Morph
mikey_boosh Posted 21 September, 2009 Posted 21 September, 2009 My ratings for Saints v Yeovil Town (2-0) Kelvin Davis 7 - Plenty to do here and he did all that was required of him perfectly as usual . W Thomas 5.5 - Tank's just not an attacking full back and it shows , he did his very best impersonation though . R Jaidi 6.5 - A big capable CB I'll be surprised if he doesn't do well for us , caught up-field out of position too often for my liking . N Trotman 6 - A good player already but when he gains experience and learns to concentrate a tad more he'll be quality . D Harding 6.5 - I like this lad so much , not only a very decent full back but consistent with it . L James 5 - Hard worker but I can't see what he offers us really as inherently better midfield players are available . D Hammond 7.5 MOTM - The best I've seen him play for us , the commanding midfield hardman we'd hoped for . M Schneiderlin 6 - Good vision and creative , but I can't say he's a game winning force as yet TBH . A Lallana 7 - Only just beaten for MOTM here , super work rate matched with real ability on the ball - what more can you ask ? M Saganowski 4.5 - Mr Nearly Man . Nothing ever quite works out for him does it , honest player but his 'touch' is just gone . R Lambert 7 - Excellent target man but needs the proper service , he sure knows how to take a penalty too (two) :-D Substitutes : PW N'diaye - 7 Offside too often but an instant improvement on Saga , there was a Camera like air of excitement when he gets on the ball . J Mills 7 - Another player who should be starting IMO , smashing little winger . P Wotton 4 - he came on , he ran about a bit . Conclusion : We demanded a win and that's just what we got so well done to Alan Pardrew and the team . If you want to know how we won this odd game the picture's not quite so rosy however , we didn't play that well for long periods in all honesty and were it not for two 'debatable' penalty decisions I'm far from confident the match wouldn't have ended in a draw again . We won because for the first time for ages we found an opposition that didn't have the gumption to mount a real counter attack after we went ahead - there a few teams as weak as Yeovil in this division so if we want to repeat this result consistently we'll have to play much better than this to be frank . I'm quite sure AP realises this . The 3 points are most welcome but has a corner been turned ? we'll see . Can't argue with that really. Especially agree that Mills should be starting. For a start he actually attempts to get to the byline and cross - something we're missing this season. He can also take a corner, don't understand why Lallana takes them - the contrast between his corners and Mills' was huge. I like Lallana (don't think anyone can doubt his talent) but he certainly isn't a winger. Maybe play him just behind, off Lambert? Hammond was certainly MoTM. Was initially impressed with Schneiderlin for the first time ever. Don't think we have anyone that has his range of passing and COULD be a threat in this league. However, he seems to lack confidence and consistency. For example, he made some really good ranged passes on Saturday, but screwed up the easier shorter ones.
LaptopSaint Posted 21 September, 2009 Posted 21 September, 2009 Didn't see the game on Saturday but from what I've read and seen so far this season, this is our team for Carlisle: Kelvin Wayne (presuming Murty still out), Jaidi, Rodney Trotter, Harding Papa (pushing up), Hammo, Morgan, Mills Lambert, Lallana With Mills taking the corners and Saga on the bench. I still have happy memories of his hat-trick at Molyneux but **** me that was a while ago. Thoughts? (Cue Lallana/Morgan bashers...)

However, that may be more of a home game team rather than away. IMO Lallana is not only wasted on the wing, he's a weak link playing there. I think he gets tired out too quickly running up and down the wing as he tends to fade out in the second half. He'd be much better suited to playing upfront and dropping into space behind Lambert to supply him with through balls and to run at the defense.
Saint Without a Halo Posted 22 September, 2009 Posted 22 September, 2009 Skates have the worst start by a club in the prem league, that's something i suppose. Be happier when they have the worst finish!
NickG Posted 22 September, 2009 Posted 22 September, 2009 or if their bad start runs for 25 games - that long without a point should relegate them!
Saint Without a Halo Posted 22 September, 2009 Posted 22 September, 2009 Saga - 4 - Static, game passed him by, he won't make the world cup like this. LOL Not really an issue as neither will Poland!
Saint Without a Halo Posted 22 September, 2009 Posted 22 September, 2009 Happy with the win but with the amount of possesion we had not to score from open play or even create a real chance is a worry. When building any good team you start from the back, get the defence right and the spine strong. Give the team the confidence that they will not concede and then work on the creativity and when to take chances going forward. Can i urge all fans to have some patience this is a "work in progress" and so far it is going well. We are building from a very low base but if it is a solid foundation it will reach the heights without falling over! a win is a win is a win so celebrate it and look forward!
Saint Without a Halo Posted 22 September, 2009 Posted 22 September, 2009 Wow, spot on. I hadnt noticed that. Good observation. Yet according to Strachan Oakley was a key part of the spine of his very successful saints team!
NickG Posted 22 September, 2009 Posted 22 September, 2009 when BT got called up to England squad Strachen said it was Oakley who should play for England and thought his form was best midfielder in country but in a non-flashy way (he put it better!)
Junior Mullet Posted 25 September, 2009 Posted 25 September, 2009 Much needed win!!! Hopefully this will give us the confidence to push on and win more games, consistantly. We musn't play next week thinking - "well we won last week, so we can chill out for a few games now since the pressure is off" None of that. We need to win consistantly, start getting up this league, uniting the fan base and enjoying supporting SFC again. C'mon!!! Sounds just like Pards.
alpine_saint Posted 25 September, 2009 Posted 25 September, 2009 Yet according to Strachan Oakley was a key part of the spine of his very successful saints team! Oakley was sh*t.
