Whitey Grandad Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 I'll take the win, even if it was a bit embarrassing having the two penalties handed to us on a plate. I'd have been even happier if we'd scored a goal from our own efforts and the midfield didn't look quite right to me but the defence looked solid, except from the set pieces, and things are slowly turning our way. I sincerely hope that Papa is not going to spend the rest of the season offside. 2-0 to the referee.

St Marco Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 Just back Took a video of Lamberts second goal Lucky i was sitting in the Kingsland that game (swapped with a mate for a game, never again). Right firstly how ironic that those who have been *****ing and moaning all week about everything find it so hard to simply say a line or two of positiveness. We play crap and lose = moan We play crap and draw = moan we play good and lose = moan we play good and draw = moan we play good but get a awful decision against us i.e a penalty = moan we play **** and get an awful decision against us = moan we play okay and get an awful decision for us = moan we play okay, clean sheet, 2 goals = moan etc etc Seriously is Play well score 5, clean sheet, top of table, michael jackson does half time show, le tissier comes out of retirement and goes in goal saving 6 penalties, 5 managers sacked and 6 employed in 90 mins = happy..... I am convinced now some people are right in that a few are total wind up merchants. Right now that is out of the way. We played quite well i thought. First half we were the more positive team trying to play the ball down and into people's feet. The midfield and defence looked solid and their only chances were from 40 yards or so out, which tamely went to Davis or to the guy near the corner flag. We had a few chances but nothing really major. They seemed more intent on launching the ball and stopping the game as predicted. The penalty was up the other end so i could not tell if it was a penalty but from speaking to people there they say he was brought down clearly. So 1-0 thanks Rickie. After that im sure most expected us to go on and thrash them but again we did what we do and try and sit back a bit and let them come to us, creating a few little errors but nothing major, was all under control. Second half was the same as the end to the first in that it was a bit boring to watch. No real quality because of the way Yeovil were trying to play. With their 2nd penalty we were right there and still did not see it very clearly. We all felt the linesman had given for offside. However the defender did try and move his shoulder and the ball deffinatly hit him. It was a harsh penalty to be honest. But those be-moaning that are idiots, we have had that happen to us this year and it has cost us (Trotman). So to not be happy about it is laughable. After the 2nd goal it killed the game off really. Both teams knew it was game over. They hoofed the ball and basically every single time Jaidi or Trotman got to it. The game was stale and petering out. The subs changed that a bit with Waigo doing pretty well i thought. Looked bright and wanted to get forward. His booking was a disgrace. So all in all not our best performance but that does not matter. We have played far better and got feck all from a game or have drawn. The 2nd goal killed the game and we did not have that need to push things. If we were at 0-0 at that point i think we would of still won late on. It is hard not to feel sorry for Yeovil as it was a harsh penalty but we have left places with the same feeling and it is nice for it not to be us for a change. But overall we were by far the better side, we passed it well and tried to create the spaces. They had pretty much no real shots as all were either way off target or bounced lamely into Davis hands. We ourselves did not create anything either after the goals until Waigo came on but we looked the more likely to score in my view. So thank god we got a win, winning ugly is something we have not been able to do for sometime and these are the type of wins we need to get out of the drop zone. Lots of pluses in that our defence is awesome, our midfield is great but our attack needs a bit of work on. But it will come. Onwards and upwards. BARCELONASAINT Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 Good to see an honest assesment from Pardew about todays game. He knows we didnt play well for long periods today and got the luck which so often deserts us. Confidence is a such a huge thing for any footballer and anyone who plays the game at whatever level will know what i'm talking about. The players go onto the pitch knowing we have not won a league game for months, they know we are expected to win this game easily and they are anxious they do not make mistakes that prevent us from winning. I thought the game today was generally garbage with a few odd exceptions but that win will have shaken off the fear factor from most of the players now and they know we are one win away from having a positive Saints point tally!! He is playing poorly too I counted at least five Yeovil headers where they could have scored. I'm sure it's something that will be worked on. At least our defence must be quite intimidating when seen from ground level. We must give away less free-kicks, although it doesn't seem fair to criticise. The referee gave them a lot of free-kicks when all our players were doing was standing their ground.
Charlie Wayman Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 A win Jim but not as we used to know it. Yet another load of sheep's ballacks served up as prime steak, no wonder people were streaming out before the end even from the Northam. Another 94 minutes of talentless, unimaginative plodding. Good job we had a friendly referee, otherwise we would be playing still next Thursday before we scored a goal. Ratings: Davies 6 - B all to do Thomas 4 - at least he's reliably crap on the ball (Wotton 78) 5 - oh well! Jaidi 8 - that's more like it, solid as a rock Trotman 5 - lacked confidence and imagination on the ball but a half decent stopper Harding 8 - good performance for 94 minutes Lallana 4 - why oh why do we put up with this lazy, half-hearted idiot? Hammond 8 - good performance although ****ged later MoTM? Schneiderlin 7 - good on the ball, great positioning; made some great tackles and passes (Mills 71) 5 - lost in translation James 5 - has had better days, his final ball is beginning to look embarrassing Lambert 7 - tried really hard to hold up the ball and bring others in but never near scoring from open play. Still, he shot them dead, bang! bang! Saganowski 4 - not so much effort put in as in recent matches. Strange how he plays better when coming on later rather than starting? (N'diaye 71) 6 - looks to have some magical flair, fast with fast feet and a wicked shot or two

crouchi Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 Ponderous performance, Lallana and James were so slow, Saganowski going backwards all the time. Papa Waigo showed he's a cut above the rest of our strong hard working but fairly talentless team. Just look at the stats 3 shots on target to their nine. Without the penalties we would still be without a win. It can only get better, because as soon as we had a decent striker on running into space, the rest of it picked up. On a bad day we just look like a bunch of Wottons!
dubai_phil Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 Looks like my pre match routine is now going to have to include a bottle of Moet and Full English breakfast for lunch I'll have to see if Saints will sponsor this new routine Didn't seem to play particularly well but as we have been saying for weeks, don't care how the first win comes just so long as it does. Hope that sets it up nicely for the epic trek up to Carlisle, hopr the players give a performance and get the result that the loyal fans who are making the trip deserve. Only 16 points from the playoffs now Only team in the bottom 8 to get any points. COYS lol, well guess I'm banned again then. Was having the 9 holes of my life - 7 pars in 9 FFS, then went off and watched Dolphins and Pelicans frollicking amongst the OAP's in this strange town (Venice Beach Florida) 2-0 win hell I'd have taken 1-0 with the ball bouncing in off the ref's backside. SaintDonkey Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 Very happy with that. Thought Hammond was superb MotM without doubt, the defence looked very solid (although Harding probably had his worse game), Morgan mislaid a few passes but his movement was best I've seen from him. Lambert always looks keen and the Yeovil defence didn't know what to do with Waigo. Downsides - Lallana isn't a winger, decent player but not a winger - Mills was much better when he came on, we need to find a way to use him or we lose him. James isn't a winger either but that's a whole different debate. Saga didn't seem to want the ball
the boy from saints Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 COYR plus great attendance at St Marys. What was the attendance by the way? Papa looked like the most exciting player here for a while and had the best crowd reaction I can remember since Theo graced St Marys. Is this the first skillful player with pace that we've had since then? The 'Ole's showed how much in control of the game we were in. We didn't have to go mad as we were 2-0 up with no fear of losing. It was such a change to have minimal nerves as the game came to a close! An enjoyable stress free sunny afternoon...how un-Saints like!
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 Hate to put a dampener on things but I thought we were very poor today. Passes galore went astray, players got in each others way and it was a far from coherent performance. We only won because of 2 very dubious pens, end off. Obviously it is good to get 3 points and I am sure we will play a lot better and lose but don't get carried away by this win, because on another day Yeovil - as poor as they were - would have got a point and we would all be pulling our hair out. Thought Morgan was dire. He is starting to remind me of Oakley. You either liked him or hated him but I can never remember him actually doing anything. madruss Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 Well, bugger me,we get a result against Yeovil and all is good. Great we got 3 points..at long last. I'm chuffed we got the result but chuffing heck we won by getting 2 penalties, besides that we actually created very few goal scoring oppotunities. Once again we struggled to break a side down,we had no width and rarely tested their keeper. Apparently the season started today, according to some, well excuse me if i don't get too excited. We had two penalties against Watford last season and scored neither. Yet some are paying it's a bad thing that we scored two penalties today?unbelievable
St Marco Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 As i said in my post i disagree FF. We played okay considering what the other team were doing. When we scored the 2nd goal we did not need to push the game, we just kept possesion and let them chase it. The crowd were doing the o'lays etc.. We were solid at the back and solid in midfield, we restricted them to 30-40 yard shots that had no chance. If we had not got those goals we would of still been more attacking rather then defensive. We were getting to the line and trying to cross etc...we did some nice passing, some of it was scrappy but compared to their hoof it up field tactics i think we did fine. That move where everyone was passing it only for Saga to do a back heel to nobody summed it up for me, at times was brilliant but individual skill let it down. Chez Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 (edited) Obviously happy to get the win but in all honesty if the ref hadn't gifted us one or maybe both penalties (first was a dive, second may well have been handball after all) it would have been 0-0. We controlled the game well and dominated possession, but we didn't get to the byeline ever or cause them hardly any problems at all in the final third. Saga was poor and Waigo should have got longer. When he came on we at least got behind them a bit. Still we look very solid indeed and perhaps the attacking potency will come as a result. Davis 8 solid. Good catching from crosses and handled long range stuff with ease. Thomas 7 solid. Got caught once but more than happy with him at right back. Jardi 9 very solid. Powerhouse. He will get caught for pace somewhere but accept that and enjoy him winning headers all day. Trottman 7 like Thomas got caught once but solid. Stupid booking for kickign ball away. Harding 6 Gave the ball away more than any other player. On a different wavelength sometimes with his passing. Pretty solid, but never tested by the right sided player. Schneiderlin 8 first half 4 second. Lack of stamina is a concern as we often take him off and fall apart (we didn't today). Hammond 8 Was everywhere in the first half. Really gets stuck in but has ability on the ball. James 6 played in three positions but mostly at right midfield where he offered little going forward but was solid (again). Held an end so to speak. Not the answer at right midfield if you ask me. Lallana 6 With so many defensive options we need more on the attack, but there was little creativity. Some decent free kicks. Corners better bu not great. See Mills. Lambert 8 Won so many flick ons its not true. In the end two mean challenged him for every high ball. Decent pens. Saga 4 Get on the end of a flick on FFS. As I have always said, not quick and offers little unless chances are created for him - which we aren't. Offside a lot. Too similar to Lambert in that he drops deep. Lambert wins stuff in the air and Saga need to get on the end. Maybe they need more time to get a partnership going, but as soon as Papa came on we looked so much more dangerous. Mills 7 great corners. A real threat. Why he did not take them all (Lallana grabbing one and chiping it straight into te keepers hands) I willnever know. The boy is going to go far IMO. Papa 6 offside about 15 times in ten minutes but just that extra bit of pace and willingness to run beyond Lambert and get their centre backs turning was great to see after suffering Saga all game doing **** all. Looking forward to seeing more. Looks like he has a first touch. Edited 19 September, 2009 by Chez

John Boy Saint Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 At last a win, just need to get rid of the magnet down the left side expanding the play, the biggest frustration seeing Lloyd James probably our best crosser of the ball doing The Times crossword while school playground sheep football up cul de sac's was being played on the other side of the pitch. Nice to see the dice of dodgy decisions being rolled in our direction for a change, that said the ref looked out on his feet just before half time. Hopefully after 5 draws this will be a positive change of habit in the right direction. SFC Forever Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 Well I for one was relatively satisfied today. The team played with more urgency than recently and did seem to want the win more than Yeovil. Yeovil did make Kelvin produce some saves but none were of the really hard type. Kelvin did well and seemed far more confident with crosses than normal.-7 Thomas did well too in his new position except for a couple of errore. -6 Jaidhi seemed to use all his experience and was always telling players where to be for corners etc. Apart from the odd header he ruled in the box and it can't be just a coincidence that his presence gave Kelvin more confidence in our defence. - 8 Trotman did okay and is on a good learning curve which he will now be able to continue with some confidence - 7 Harding did his usual job and is always trying 100% - 6 James seemed lost at times and lightweight - 5 Lallana - Still being allowed to take corners freekicks tec. He was told to leave them for a while and the quality improved immediately. Did get a few tackles in today and worked harder than usual. - 6 Hammond was everywhere and though booked was my man of the match. He linked well with front and back line and is beginning to show us why AP wanted him -8 Morgan showed more heart than usual and may be coming to terms with the league - 7 Saga did a lot of running and actually seemed to be genuinely trying. Matchfitness will bring him more games and start the goals coming - 6 Lambert had his best game for a while and goals apart seemed to enjoy himself today. Good at holding up the ball and flickons and very nearly my man of the match - 8 Today we saw a few problems resolved. We now have a penalty taker. There is someone else who can take corners. Jaidhi will knit our defence together and help the younger more inexperienced players. The team is starting to attack the ball more though there is still a long way to go. All in all I am a lot happier than I was a month ago although there is still a lot that needs to be done.
teamsaint Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 having a solid back 4 gives us a great base to work from. Better passing and teamwork will come over time, especially if we get more adventurous at home. Notr playing Mills today was a bit of an odd one, maybe carrying a knock? Think Harding might be helped by having Mills or Holmes playing regularly in front of him. Although lallana has had a decent season till now, perhaps he needs to be rested or used differently. saint1977 Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 Thought we played some reasonable stuff at times today but lucky with the penalties. Back 4 and Kelvin were not over-worked but did what they needed to very well, impressed too with Hammond and Morgan who kept the ball well and distributed simply. However, we looked ponderous and narrow at times with a painful lack of width although we did get to the byeline more than some games this season. Useful cameo from Papa but we really need to bring in a couple of pacy loans still. We lost focus in the last 15 minutes of the first half and Leeds/Charlton/MK would have scored at least a couple of goals as Saints downed tools. We really have to get rid of that lazy, backward culture but the second half intensity was much better and we kept pressing right to the end which was an improvement. Overall we are getting better and look solid at the back but we cannot have Papa as the only pace outlet so there should be a couple more loans to give us that extra urgency to stretch teams. Didn't think Lallana was that bad today actually but I agree that Mills needs to take over set piece duty. I have my Carlisle tickets so looking forward to that. Arizona Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 W00T! Sat in a hotel in Latvia, just checked in on the result. Sounds like the dodgiest win since we beat Everton in 2002 but it was the result that mattered today. Fookin brilliant. One more and we'll be into possitive figures. Pompey making the worst start to a season in Premiership history kind of adds flavour to the meal too.
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 Very pleased with our first win since Easter. However, can't overlook the stats that said Yeovil had 16 shots to our 7 and we only had 3 shots on target all match - 2 of which were penalties. If anyone wants to have a pop at me for negativity please qulaify your criticism by addressing those facts first. From reading this thread I would suggest we still have some players who don't cut it at League 1 level. And they're all from last seasons squad of underperformers. Keep making changes Alan - you're headed in the right direction.
Saint_clark Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 Watching the replays made me realise just how fantastic Lamberts penalties were.
Smirking_Saint Posted 19 September, 2009 Share Posted 19 September, 2009 Watching the replays made me realise just how fantastic Lamberts penalties were. They were fantastic pens taken by the big man, he caused a few problems today. To the fact that they started to double up on him. Shame that we had nobody that 'read' his flicks and through balls, Saga just let the game play around him unfortunately. Still feel a bit 'dirty' mind, they were never pens.
