Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 18 September, 2009 Posted 18 September, 2009 Wow, that is amazing. Really, really made my day. Thanks!
the_barmy_saints_army Posted 18 September, 2009 Posted 18 September, 2009 if thats the dell its bloody amazing for 1934
brmbrm Posted 18 September, 2009 Posted 18 September, 2009 That's really wonderful. And they play with bowling balls!
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 18 September, 2009 Posted 18 September, 2009 (edited) Nostalgia hey !!! One sponsor very prominent was Toomers, in London Road is where I bought a number of boots and never thought at the time of their association with Saints, until that is my first pair of Patricks. "Cup fighters"......"Southampton have a Football nursery" amongst others, brilliant Edited 18 September, 2009 by INFLUENCED.COM
rpb Posted 18 September, 2009 Posted 18 September, 2009 Pompey are on there too ... http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=28218 Why do players back then look so old for their age?
Nineteen Canteen Posted 18 September, 2009 Posted 18 September, 2009 if thats the dell its bloody amazing for 1934 True but not so good for 1994.
Nineteen Canteen Posted 18 September, 2009 Posted 18 September, 2009 Pompey are on there too ... http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=28218 Why do players back then look so old for their age? Lifestyle - played football and worked for a living.
rpb Posted 18 September, 2009 Posted 18 September, 2009 Lifestyle - played football and worked for a living. I loved the 'unstopable' shot! I know that they had big toe caps back then ( I remember playing in them!) but did centre forwards really toe punt the ball when shooting?

Got to remember they were playing with a small medicine ball and a pipe and a packet of ready rubbed in their shorts. Toe punt or not did you see anyone deliberately try and kick the ball out?

Toe punt or not did you see anyone deliberately try and kick the ball out? Very true - if you enjoyed skillful football it must have been terrible to watch every week, though.
John B Posted 19 September, 2009 Author Posted 19 September, 2009 Very true - if you enjoyed skillful football it must have been terrible to watch every week, though. There were huge crowds cheap tickets no aggro and good football
Norm Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 If you look closely, you will see Art behind the Milton Road goal!
Wes Tender Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 Got to remember they were playing with a small medicine ball and a pipe and a packet of ready rubbed in their shorts. Toe punt or not did you see anyone deliberately try and kick the ball out? No. And the board and chairman at that time would have been there out of a sense of public duty too, not to line their pockets.
Toadhall Saint Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 Very true - if you enjoyed skillful football it must have been terrible to watch every week, though. Its all relative really - given the grounds, boots, football etc then these guys would have been classed as skilful.
Badger Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 That is an excellent find. "A famous and time honoured team of the south...." ..." these fine chaps have a reputation second to none ". No ego's there. The club had its own snooker and billiard champions.Wonder if they had a handbag thief amongst them ?
eurosaint Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 Bert Scriven, now there is a name to conjure with ! I guess he's now been replaced by Papa Waigo N'Diaye ?
Pancake Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 Yep, a good find by Al de Man and posted else where...
Victor Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 Can just about imagine MLT being a "market gardener and pig breeder" in his spare time whilst a Premiership player, but not many of the others!
LostBoys Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 Super stuff - great shots of the Milton Road end and Toomers where I bought my footie boots.
SaintRichmond Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 Pompey are on there too ... http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=28218 Why do players back then look so old for their age?[/QUOTE] Anybody who plays for Pompey would look old for their age IMHO:cool:
Mr Sparky Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 So sad that a family firm like toomers has now gone. I used to work their part time in the late 80's early 1990 time and it was so old fashioned then. You could get anything from footy kits, boots , ice skates , hockey gear to a pack of cards, poker dice and fishing stuff. These big stores gobbled up the little shops a bit like Tesco and co putting all the bakers and butchers on the heap. I feel sad now, and i bet i am in the minority here.

No you are not in a minority, of those old enough to remember the era of Toomers, or Patstone & Cox anyway. Another thing that started the decline of such shops was the branded shirts.A relative of mine knew one of the senior bods at Toomers in the 1970's.He suggested to him that it must be 'boom time' at Toomers after we won the cup.Surprisingly it was not.Admiral now supplied all kit to Saints free - so a major customer was lost - and furthermore Admiral's terms of trade were far more severe than they as an independent trader hasd been used to.
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 i bet i am in the minority here. Age would dictate that emotion, I bought the best boots, ever, at Toomer, they were New Balance and very comfortable with the softest of leather, staff, which must have included you around that time, were very helpful and as you highlight the range of gear was superb

Toomer Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 1934,wonder if my dad was there he would have been about 15 then.
rpb Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 So sad that a family firm like toomers has now gone. Holt & Haskell in Shirley has survived - it seems to specialise in cricket gear though.
Nineteen Canteen Posted 19 September, 2009 Posted 19 September, 2009 Super stuff - great shots of the Milton Road end and Toomers where I bought my footie boots. Not a bookie, then?
Badger Posted 20 September, 2009 Posted 20 September, 2009 Just watched the skates edition from 1934. http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=28218 They even feature a dog in goal.Perhaps they could do with him again.
