Possible move to Southampton

Hi,

I am being made redundant at the end of this month by Barclays in Poole. The job prospects are pretty bad down here in Dorset.

Mrs WS and I are considering moving up to town to improve my job prospects (I work in IT), but haven't got a clue where to start looking for somewhere to live!

Can anyone suggest areas in Southampton to look for property, budget around 250k?

Thanks!

Wimborne, is there nothing in JPMorgan for you? Not sure what skills you have but will happily put for forward for anything of interest. If you PM me some details of skills I could have a look to see what's available.

Depends on your needs. If you're looking for a older period property then Upper Shirley is nice and you'll get a roomy 3 bed detached Victorian place in a nice road. In other, less desirable areas in Shirley you'll get a 4 bed detached for that. Inner Avenue and Highfield are also nice places for older character properties with similar prices to Upper Shirley. If you want quiet then Basset is a nice suburban area and you'll get a 3 or 4 bed for your money depending on area and quality. At the other end of the scale you could get yourself a very nice city centre flat at that price as there is an over-supply of flats and prices are competative. You'll get a top end build in a nice central location at your budget.

Trouble with this thread is that everyone will disagree with each other on the best location. What are you looking for? Close to city? Quiet cul-de-sac?

Good point! We are fairly rural at present, so probably not suited to city

Thanks, I will do that

Thanks, that helps a lot. I only come into town for the football, and have worked as a field engineer so know the business areas.

try HCC for an I.T job

Good call, looked at their website last week but nothing suited

Why would someone want to do that? Ocean village is a very nice place.

Yeah, very nice, very pricey and properties too small. All imho opinion of course. Oh, I would also not want to live near a bunch of yachties who wear their jumpers draped over their shoulders with the arms tied together on their chest in any weather.

Shame you can't stretch to £310k, I know a fantastic investment property, detached, 4/5 beds, O/R parking for 2 cars, 130 foot garden, workshop, summer house, shed, kids 2 storey playhouse, 3 recps, study, utility room 2 baths. near to motorway, airport and rail, v good sec school. needs some work, but nothing beyond keen DIY.

Shame really, but will quite likely come to market proper middle of 2010.

Oh, and it's suburban location.

South Stoneham is one of the best routes into town without a doubt.

Blue Star route 2 between eastleigh and city centre.

UniLink routes to airport*, and both hospitals (direct) and again city centre.

Regular trains from Swaythling station to parkway* (airport), Eastleigh, Salisbury and into city centre.

* you can get to virtually anywheer in the country from parkway station, with FREE parking at weekends if you want to do a day trip to London.

M27 just around the corner with 2 routes to get to it, great for avoiding rush hour traffic once you learn how to time it right.

2 routes to the M3, again it's down to time of day which one's best.

Matchdays? Terrible traffic down Thomas Lewis Way, and a bit of a log jam around Bevois Valley, nd te level crossing in Empress Ind Ect. BUT, again, I can do it in 10-15 minutes usig my 'short cut'. Most games I pick up a friend in Hedge End and still see vehicles that I passed going the 'direct' route when I am turning into my road after dropping him home after. same applied when I lived in Regents Park, which imho is another nice area to live in but without the get out of town quick options.

Just my two penneth.

We have been up today to look around the area, we quite like Totton.

Anyone got any thoughts, what is public transport like, especially on match days!

Close to M27 and soton so good transport links, can't say much else really. Most people i know have a real thing against Totton, don't really know why.

Looked anywhere else ??

I believe that Totton was once England's largets village, hence the inhabitants have a strange superiority/inferiority complex. They resemble Bournemouth and Eastliegh supporters a bit; they have their own team, but for some strange reason their local team is their second team. It must be difficult to cope with this contradiction for some.

Although Totton is a nice place to live, not least due to it being literally minutes from the New Forest, for the people of Southampton, it is a slight inconvenience that we tolerate as it has the best pizza take-away shop in the region.

All in my humble opinion of course.

Totton can be a pain if you work in Southampton. I travel every day from Southampton to the Waterside and the Totton by-pass going into town is often stationary back past the Rushington roundabout. It only needs a small shunt on the Redbridge flyover for everything to grind to a halt.

Upper Shirley is the place to live (no riff-raff, please).

We have found a few properties on Rightmove in Regents Park that look quite nice, would like a victorian semi or detached.

What is the Regents Park area like?

I know it is on my left when I come in from Redbridge, but have never driven through.

Cheers!

cheaper version of upper shirley. many of the houses are identical in terms of layout, just smaller in every dimension!

Also moving down to Southampton. Have been looking around the Shirley area as need to be closish to the general hospital. Have found a few flats to rent in Landguard Road. Anyone know if that is an alright area as i'm not that familiar with the area?

Nought wrong with Landguard Road as such, a bit busy traffic wise, but close enough to both SGH and Shirley for buses and pubs. Shirlay has a good range of charity shops and a few decent boozers, but you need to find them as the better ones are tucked away imo, apart from The Brigh****er, which is a Wetherspoons hence good for ale drinking.

If I were working at the General I'd go for somethiung in Upper Shirley if I could afford it as there is more space for parking and you are not quite so traffic-locked. Also, closer to the Common, which is lovely for walking, cycling dog-walking, bird-watching etc. And for a cheap boozer you ahve The Malvern.

If you are going to be regularly going out of the city, then heading north, you'd want Upper Shirley anyway.

If you are working at the Gen check out the UnilInk routes too, they are regular and have by far the most polite helpful bus drivers you will find:

http://www.unilinkbus.co.uk/networkmap.shtml

I would seriously recomend you go for a short let, whilst you suss the areas out, no disrespect to anyone living in those 'certain areas' but their are some where it is definitely preferable to be a 'local lad' if you know what i mean.

On yeah, and don't listen to that Deppo chap. he'll groom ya quicker than ou can say, "that Ice House, looks like a nice friendly pub with all those lovely hanging baskets, hanging there"

Lovely pub. Unfortunately I pulled someone in there, so can never go back.

Not sure if Deppo's comments are aimed at you but I'm surprised if so. Landguard Road runs from Shirley Warren to Tremona Road, which the General Hospital is on. Shirley Warren is commonly acknowledged to be one of Southampton's greatest dives so living on a road leading in / out of it certainly isn't advisable in my book.

If you move a little way away from the hospital, you should still find flats in a nicer area and within walking distance. There have been some new developments on Winchester Road recently.

btw, and fwiw, imho right now is THE best opportunity to buy that we will see for many years to come. If you are ever going to get a foothold on the property ladder, you should be looking to do it within the next 12 months.

People are have gotten really savvy to the estate agent and TV expert bull**** and I believe the market will grow nice and steadily for at least the next 6-8 yeras. There is a recession for us to emerge from too, so people who support a growing market from the bottom are calling the tune.

Us a bit further up the chain are waiting for you to lead the way forward.

Buy Buy Buy.

I also reckoin anyone with a few grand stashed could do a lot worse than to snap some great little BTL properties too

No it doesn't. It's off Shirley Road, town end.

Sorry to correct you but you like i did earlier got it wrong. It's miles from The Warren. But i must stress that The Warren is not as bad as people would have you believe. I have a few friends who live there and they wouldn't move if you paid them. It actually has one of the stronger community spirits in the City imo.

Landguard Road runs from Shirley Road through to Hill Lane:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=landguard%20road%20shirley&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wl

Not a bad area really, lots of bed-sits plus a few regular buses to the General. Having said that I would still recomend Upper Shirley or if you want a nice big house (shared) there are often rooms advertised just a few doors down from The Range trafic lights. I viewed one up there a while back and they are very nice inside, decent gardens and off road parking.

Added to that, my favourite bur route runs past your door, the number 22. I love the number 22 bus, I really do. It has a lovely little back road route.
