saint lard Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Decent result, but could have been more. APs preparation for the game seems to have been good, his ability to respond to events during the game is starting to look questionable. This seems to a re-occuring theme thus far.

ericofarabia Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Decent result, but could have been more. APs preparation for the game seems to have been good, his ability to respond to events during the game is starting to look questionable. A little bit of backtracking there maybe re your remarks at his starting line up But you'll not be the only one to query his lack of re action / substitutions once it was obvious Charlrton had come up with a plan B in the 2nd half. Maybe it is a good sign that we feel disappointed at only a draw at Charlton when you compare it to the reaction of the Brentford and Colchester fans at the end of the games at SMS, you'd have thought bthey'd won the league
Alain Perrin Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Personally I think bringing Waigo on for anything more than a cameo would have been risky. Imagine if he'd messed up an conceeded a goal. Blod him for 2 minutes and let him tear it up next week. The future's bright, the future's red and white.
Elmore Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 You cannot question AP on here. But by God you can moan and whine all the time.

Totally agree only thing I was disappointed with today was lallanas in ability to deliver a corner. He either floated it or couldn't clear the bloody first defender crowds
saint lard Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 You cannot question AP on here. Well,i'm bloody going too. Timings of substitutions for one. The ability too hang onto a lead has thus far been unaddressed, and close out a game once in front. To find the ability to score more than once. To effectively change the course of a game with some tactical nous. It's a game of opinions, could not go today i admit. Nevermind i'm sure the season starts here....again.
ulstersaint Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 OK, we are still looking for a league win but there are some positives: 1. No proper pre-season, so it was going to take a few games to get it together 2. No heavy defeats so far and we're looking more solid at the back 3. Pardew has brought in his own players and they are looking good (esp' Murty, Harding, Trotman, Hammond, Lambert) 4.Jaidi is a good signing and will add experience, height and power to the back four 5. A point at unbeaten Charlton is a good result 6. Home game next week
kpturner Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Sitting at Charlton station now after the game. Pretty solid performance overall - dominated the first half and should have been 2 up. Dominated start of second half too. Main difference in the second half was that charlton had a fast outlet when our attacks/corners broke down whereas we had no such outlet. In fact the equaliser came when perry lobbed the ball straight to the keeper. He launched it straight to shelvey in space, cross, Davis came out and missed it, and it hit burton and bobbled in. All charlton after that until last 10 when we started creating chances again. Felt very secure when jaidi came on whereas charlton defense turned into the keystone cops. If we could deliver a corner we could have nicked it. Couldn't really judge papa, but he did tackle back in his cameo. Good result IMHO given the disallowed offside efforts in the second half.
Mr X Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 pleased with a point to be honest. But noone can deny we are relegation form at the moment 5 points from 21!!!!!!!!!!!!
teamsaint Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Totally agree only thing I was disappointed with today was lallanas in ability to deliver a corner. He either floated it or couldn't clear the bloody first defender crowds you really have to wonder what is going on training wise on our (his )corner delivery. Sure MLT could get Lallana delivering better in no time. Really good to see him score, though. Will be a class act, and deserves some reward for his recent hard working performances.
saint_stevo Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Makes me laugh the criticism from people who didnt even see the game. Aimed at?
ulstersaint Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Totally agree only thing I was disappointed with today was lallanas in ability to deliver a corner. saint_stevo Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Mills should take corners on the right, and MS on the right, whipped in IMO
alpine_saint Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Aimed at? Ignore him, he comes out with it every week
SW11_Saint Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 First team to take points off Charlton, and a good away point - shows what we're capable of, and we should now only get better. Need to get the 3 points at home now, and where we can away, and we'll be fine.
saint_stevo Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Ignore him, he comes out with it every week Oh, one of them eh Normally a good point, in our current position, not good enough. How many times can we take the lead, yet fail to win?
brianoneils slidingtackle Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 I'm happy with a 1 -1, I expected to get hammered in this game and Im happy to be wrong again :-)
John B Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Why bring Waigo on in the 91st minute? Seems pointless I wish Redknapp had bought on substitutes in the last minutes when we were winning. It wastes time probably
saint lard Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Makes me laugh the criticism from people who didnt even see the game. 5 points from 21 available. 11 points from safety. Damn those statistics. When can i commence my critisim? More importantly, when can i get worried reference the possibility of further relegation?
Delmary Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 A great result against the top side. Can't wait for next Sat's game.
brmbrm Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Why bring Waigo on in the 91st minute? Seems pointless It wastes a bit of time when the other team are most likely to score.
saint_stevo Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 thats great, holding on then rather than trying to sneak it? Woulda been good to see what he was capable of though, maybe 10mins
glkdcdes Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Why bring Waigo on in the 91st minute? Seems pointless gives a certain class of supporter with ignorance and a losing mentality the chance to make a pointless comment?
saint_stevo Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 gives a certain class of supporter with ignorance and a losing mentality the chance to make a pointless comment? Ignorance? To what? Just seems a bit of a wasted opportunity to throw an unknown quantity on the pitch and see what he could do. Zip it.

Bald Headed Jesus Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 There is a simple formula to follow on here: i) We lose or draw - knives out, Pardew out, unacceptable ii) We win - begrudging admiration "but only means anything if we win the next one" No comment on the game itself because they were not there. Ad inifnitum.
St Marco Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Great result by the lads and in all honesty think a draw was the right result. First half we played awesome and played some of the best football i have seen for sometime. We are at our best when the other team are trying to play too. We maybe should have taken some of our other chances, which seems to be our story at the mo. The formation change and team selection was spot on in my book. When i saw both Morgan and Mills in there i thought we would be too lightweight in midfield but having 5 in there made a big difference. We passed the ball around and looked the far better team. Going 1 up was the least we deserved as we were great. Davis had feck all to do. Second half started the same and we looked good but we had a total feck up at the back which resulted in them scrambling it in. After that we all thought here we go again. Typical Saints. And they did just that. You could see the nerves creep in and players started to go missing etc.. If this was last year or the year before we would of lost it. We had a bit of luck especially with the shot that hit the bar. Charlton dominated majority of the second half and i think a lot of us were just waiting for that 2nd goal. But Pardew made the changes with i think was Mellis and Jaidi and with that we started to play again. The final 10 minutes we were all over them and finished the game the stronger team. Was good to see Papa and Jaidi play and i thought Jaidi did pretty well. He is a big bloke who did not **** about, he cleared well and cut out passes well. Came up for some of our corners etc.. Both the new guys have obviously not played a game in 3-4 months so will take time for them to get to full match fitness. But from what i saw i think they could go on to be good signings. All in all before the game i thought we would lose, a game that came to early for us in our building process. We aproached the game in a very professional manner and for me that is what stood out the most. Charlton at times wasted some good counter attacks and a crap manager would of gambled and tried to go for the win. But the reality was we were trying to push forward but due to lack of pace at back we were getting caught. It was a case of trying to either stun the game and take a point which would of been a good result, or gamble and potentially lose. I think we made the right choice. In my book this is our hardest game on the fixture list and have now gone through a sequence of games against teams fancied for promotion. We now go into 6 games which are a lot easier and i expect we will now win majority of those. So a good result and a solid professional performance. It was worrying to see the confidence wobble after their goal but they recovered well. Lallana did pretty well i thought but maybe it is time to let Morgan take the corners. Next week is a must win game and i think we will. Listening to radio on way home you can't help but laugh listening to some of the people saying it was a bad result etc.....
Legod Third Coming Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Er, anyone go today? Stone fecking wall penalty. Last minute. We should be sat here with three points. Useless, useless officials. Ratings: Kelvin - n/a Trotman - 8 Perry - 7 Harding - 7 Thomas - 8 Mills - 7 Morgan - 7 James - 6 (poor today, shame) Lambert - 6 (really no service but didn't go looking and didn't hold the ball up) Hammond - 6.5 Lallana - how do you rate him? What was his job?? Waigo - too brief Mellis - should have had a penalty Jaidi - looks a class apart. Good game, good point. Onwards.
glkdcdes Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 all hail glkdcdes- UBER FAN not at all. Just absolutely sick and tired of the the half a dozen or so mind bogglingly dull negative [maybe attention seekers for al i know] posters that only ever want to make often totally un informed negative comments. Is there a way i can block these people so when they post i dont have to be polluted with their whining drivel.

Come back when you have grown some and can avoid personal digs.
Sheff Saint Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 We've talked about getting a winning mentatily going at the club but after the last couple of years it's nice that we are at least getting hard to beat. Baby steps. Yeovil will be tough next week, they'll be real pressure on the players to win that. I honestly think if we can win that, scrappy or not, we could easily win the next 6. Fingers crossed!

How dare these people.
Legod Third Coming Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 To be fair, we were out of the traps second half better than I have seen in a long, long time. Bloody typically, THEY then score totally against the run of play!

kpturner Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Er, anyone go today? Stone fecking wall penalty. Last minute I was watching with the prawn sandwich brigade in the east stand. Looked nailed on to me. I think the mellis "dive" just earlier cost us there.
shurlock Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 (edited) Just back from what is a local fixture for me. Haven't read any of the other reports but just to say that APs game plan worked perfectly. We essentially went 4-5-1 with Mills and Lallana playing slightly further foward in midfield and as a result had them playing in front of us for large chunks of the game. So much for the showboating some were calling for in the prematch. The game swung back and forth. We started the brighter and Mills should have scored from a nice floated ball from Schneiderlin; they then had a good 20 mins before we finished brightly and got the goal. We also started well second half - indeed, they looked like the away side, happy to hit us on the break with pace (which led to the equaliser). Their goal was slightly dubious -KD looked to be fouled - if not, he possibly should have done better; saying that, we had to soak up a ton of pressure and survived a few close-shaves; but this was no Huddersfield. To this extent, I thought AP's substitutions were excellent. Doubtless, people will be criticising him for not bringing Waigo on but I don't think this was the time or the place as we weren't seeing much of the ball and needed a few more bodies to stop the game getting too stretched. Both Mills and Perry were tiring, so Jaidi and Mellis freshened things up. Things calmed down after their arrival and if anything we had the better of the half chances. A couple of 'cheeky' penalty shouts at the end (Mellis certainly went down too softly for one) but a point was a fair reflection. My man of the match was easily Hammond - he was absolutely everywhere - indeed, he was further foward than Lambert at points. Also thought Mills had an excellent game; both he and harding stifled Sam and Mills has a nice tendency to ghost into space. Lallana also was very lively, though his final delivery continues to let him down. Thomas also impressed - some telling headers at the back post while he actually showed he was no mug getting forward (rather than taking the easy option and hitting it long) All in all, it was one of the best performances of the season (Birmingham also up there) and a decent atmosphere. Still need to be a bit sharper around set pieces (they kept playing short corners to bailey each time who managed to get away shots and nobody picked up on this) while another Hammond in the centre of midfield wouldn't go amiss (Surman would be ideal for this set-u). Otherwise, I think we have the nous and resources to kick on and impose ourselves. Yeovil is now a must win, albeit for different reasons. Edited 12 September, 2009 by shurlock best performance - lets not get too carried away

Graffito Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 A good competitive game between two strong sides. We were good value for the first half lead. They were better second half. We dominated the first 10 mins of the second half and then gifted them a goal which brought on sustained pressure. Unlike Saints, Charlton have pace and it caused us problems at times. We need some pace and to be a bit more creative to make more of Lambert but overall a pretty solid performance. Jaidi looked good when he came on.

mcjwills Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Wasn't at the game, but considering we were playing a team that had won 6 out of 6. I am well happy with a point away to them. Onwards and upwards as they say. Keep the faith, it will happen
WGC Saint Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 I should be happy with that point but still feel cheesed off that we let a lead slip and are still searching for our first win! Still, being the optimist that I am, I fully expect us to give Yeovil a good spanking next week and then go on a run of four or five straight wins........
kpturner Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 i wasn't there (crippled) but the bbc commentary said Kelvin failed to deal with a cross, was he at fault? He missed it while colliding with the CH and it just hit Burton and bobbled in. But you could take it back to our shyte corner, cleared to perry who lobbed it straight at their goalie when all the big fellas were still up for the corner. Goalie to shelvey in acres, beat defender, cross, **** up, goal!
