sotonjoe Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 Let's say I've got an old fireplace which I covered over with mdf and then plastered, but now I want to rip it all open again and install a good old-fashioned open fire with fireplace and hearth etc, who on earth should I be calling? Is there such thing as a fire tradesman who can do the 'whole job' as it were? Am going to go to the Open Fire Centre in Shirley later on as they seem like a good start!
saint_stevo Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 hmmmm My old man would probably do it for you. I should probably as about flue's and stuff
sotonjoe Posted 12 September, 2009 Author Posted 12 September, 2009 I should probably as about flue's and stuff come again mate?
sotonjoe Posted 12 September, 2009 Author Posted 12 September, 2009 who knows mate. cheers though. turns out the open fire centre in shirley can do the whole job anyway so it's all gravy.
hamster Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 I am clueless about flueless, but you could ask the fire brigade's advice re sweeping the chimley, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't offer a free service.

hamster Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 sotonjoe, although the shirley place can do the whole job, I'd always recomend getting at least two estimates, here's a good site for getting estimates: http://www.ratedpeople.com/ You could post the job under a couple of categories and check out the reviews of anyone who contacts you, it seems to work quite well.
hamster Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 We dont. I'm not surprised. Ergo I was correct. Get in.
saint_stevo Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 ask advice, but there are no chimney sweeps employed a home fire safety visit would be as far as it would go
hamster Posted 12 September, 2009 Posted 12 September, 2009 ask advice, but there are no chimney sweeps employed a home fire safety visit would be as far as it would go We had one last year, free smoke alarms WOOT. There are some very tall, hunky firemen working in our area acording to mrs h, I hope you were not one of them. They wanted to put one up in our bedroom but couldn't get it to stay up, so I had to get my tools out later on and do the job properly.
