hamster Posted 12 September, 2009 Share Posted 12 September, 2009 (edited) I can't remember the question, it was about a castle or something, and I think Jillyanne was referring to one of the contestants, not the town of Deal... aha, a castle, could it have been about Deal castle, Walmer castle, Richborough castle or maybe even sandown castle, there are quite a few dotted around to protect the lovely little town? Although Deal is the loveliest town in the world, the town's motto is something in latiun or greek; 'befriend the stranger' I think. The casual visitor should not be fooled into thinking the local inhabitants are a soft touch, I can't remember his name, but some chap once wrote of my fellow townsfolk something along these lines: "Deal is the most villainous place. It is full of filthy-looking people." He didn't say it to their faces though, pussy. I don't think Dickens liked it much either, he was a ***** anyway, born in Pompey and lived and loved in Chatham. He wouldn't know a decent maritime port if it bit him on his filthy skate bum. William Pitt's excise men regularly got their arses kicked by the towns people too. I know it is fairly easy to get hold of a few packs of duty free fags in most places around the UK, but in Deal, official figures would make you think that the place is full of non smokers, to this day not many people buy their baccy from the shops down there (he lied ). Being serious about it though, for a long time Deal was the sole naval protector for the country, and what we today call smuggling, was in fact a legal right bestowed upon the town by royal charter. I think that the original charter is in the museum on the beach, where the timeball tower is. If you are still reading this, I was actually born in a house built on the original site of the napoleonic dockyard just a stones throw from the beach. Sadly pehaps, I am quite proud of that fact. Writing this has made want to get myself down there for a pint in the best pub in Deal, the Deal Hoy, and in the morning I'm gonna sort this out. We are all a product of so many things and people that have gone before us, and if I could write properly I would love to write a book about the place and people that I come from, in fact I would say that my dream job would qite likely be working for the Deal tourist board. It is quite touching actually that someone had taken note of my previous ramblings, and remembered that I am a Man of Kent, let aone which little town I was born in. Cheers RednWhite. Walmer castle rings a bell, but can't remember the question, sorry. You would have surely got it right though!! I read it all, it's cool that you have such enthusiasm for the place I reckon. It's not sad either! I am from Netley Abbey, and for some reason I am well proud of where I am from, and I love it down there (I moved away when I was 10, probably the reason I love it so much is cos I miss it) and, like you, could easily talk about it all day long. I get down there as much as I can. I'll be sure to visit that pub if I ever find myself in Deal No worries Man of Kent, I always remember little things like that for some reason "It's always good to remember where you come from and celebrate it. To remember where you come from is part of where you're going."
hamster Posted 12 September, 2009 Share Posted 12 September, 2009 /\ Netley holds a very special memory for me RnR but that's another story I would love to spend a halloween eve at the castle ruins too, I've heard it is very creepy, do they still do those events there? hamster Posted 12 September, 2009 Share Posted 12 September, 2009 Just went to the Deal Hoy website, have a look if you want a laugh, I could be wrong but I am guessing that they did not spend much money on it: http://www.dealhoy.co.uk/ It's a great pub, with some gorgeous beers on tap, and although we love it, I probably wouldn't send a tourist in there, it's an acquired taste. They also have some really cracking live music nights in there. It's owned and run by a couple who run it as a kind of hobby, as it is the only pub I have ever known that closes on New Years Eve so that they can have a night for themselves, veryt strange in this day and age especially that ANY pub can afford to turn away the NYE revellers money! Talking of being proud of your hometown, I had a Deal website use one of MY photos to respresent Deal a while back, I was so proud.
hamster Posted 12 September, 2009 Share Posted 12 September, 2009 I used to deliver to the Prince Consort years ago, really got on well with the couple that ran it, Elaine and Tim.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 12 September, 2009 Share Posted 12 September, 2009 Hahah that is the best website ever!! Sounds like a proper pub then, therefore sounds good to me! Ah yes the Prince Consort, never went in there (as a 10 year old I didn't really frequent the pubs:() but went past it more than enough times on my way to the Victoria park, which is a great place

I'm surprised that you haven't been approached to manage the 'home' team on Sunday to be honest. It's young 'uns against old crocks at Fleming Park.
