Jesus Reigned Posted 9 September, 2009 Share Posted 9 September, 2009 I currently have a "standard" Sky box and want to get Sky+ as cheaply as possible. I don't want Sky+HD, or Sky multi-room, just bog-standard Sky+. I called Sky today to be advised that I could get it for £60 if I was able to recommend a friend to join Sky, but if not it would cost me £149 for the box and £60 installation. Whilst not a natural haggler I gave it a go, ie I said I was considering getting either Sky+ or replacing my hard-drive DVD recorder which has packed in, and what's the best they can do for me, but the girl I spoke to wasn't having any of it. Anyone got any advice as to the cheapest way for me to get Sky+; £210 strikes me as somewhat pricey?! Cheers.
Huffton Posted 9 September, 2009 Share Posted 9 September, 2009 Thought they were doing a free box for existing customers? I got it 4-5 months ago and only had to pay for installation. Just phone up and ask for the cancellation department, they'll soon change their tune.

Saint_clark Posted 9 September, 2009 Share Posted 9 September, 2009 get V+ or tell them you will be This. Tell them you will just cancel your current subscription and switching to virgin - I managed to get it done and dusted for £100 plus all the sports channels free for 2 months. hamster Posted 9 September, 2009 Share Posted 9 September, 2009 I also got a discounted monthly rate just by saying I was leaving them a couple of months ago. Also got the sports package at reduced rate by saying I didn't want it for the summer months.
Saint_Jonny Posted 9 September, 2009 Share Posted 9 September, 2009 Get the box off ebay and plug in yourself. Easy.
swannymere Posted 9 September, 2009 Share Posted 9 September, 2009 Get the box off ebay and plug in yourself. Easy. The normal Sky box uses one cable from the dish whilst the Sky+ boxes use 2, not sure if you need both or not but i assume this is how you can record 2 channels at once. benjii Posted 9 September, 2009 Share Posted 9 September, 2009 Yep - beat them with the Virgin stick. Virgin are currently offering the V+ box (which is technically superior to the Sky+ box apparently) for £49 upfront (inc installation I think) plus an extra fiver on their monthly subscription. bpsaint Posted 9 September, 2009 Share Posted 9 September, 2009 You'll need to get yourself a Sky+ box, pretty reasonably priced on ebay,as well as a second coax cable running to run from the dish to the box. Done the same thing myself for about £60.
Murdock Posted 9 September, 2009 Share Posted 9 September, 2009 I think you'll need to check that your dish has at least a double LNB (i think that's what it's called) or a quad one to enable you to connect a second cable to it. Like others have already said get a Sky+ box off EBay and away you go.
Smirking_Saint Posted 10 September, 2009 Share Posted 10 September, 2009 get V+ or tell them you will be Lol, when i was sorting a sky subscription out for the inlaws i tried this, the salesman told me to '**** off then' So, i phoned his manager and got sky free for 3 months as a 'sorry', plus got Sky HD, broadband, sky talk for 40 a month after that. Absolute Bargain.
chrisobee Posted 10 September, 2009 Share Posted 10 September, 2009 I got it for free when I joined in February, unfair you should have to pay £150 which is a lot anyway. It's really very useful though and I would really miss it now so get it by hook or by crook I say ! I'm not surprised though by their attitude, their Customer Service can be good but when it is bad it's awful !! It might well be a different person you speak to will be more flexible, that is certainly one thing I have found.

chrisobee Posted 10 September, 2009 Share Posted 10 September, 2009 One more thought, there are always a couple of Sky staff in the main shopping centre here looking for new customer, however I had a few problems after I first joined and they sorted them out and I saved a fair bit in the end. So much easier I find talking face to face, would be surprised if they did not have the same kind of thing in one of the Southampton shopping centres. chrisobee Posted 10 September, 2009 Share Posted 10 September, 2009 Yup ring up and cancel. That's what we done then got free box and only £30 installation. Yes, I thought of that but then you're without the TV channels until it's installed. Still reckon if you speak to the "right" person you might get a better deal. How long have you been with Sky? Jesus Reigned Posted 10 September, 2009 Author Share Posted 10 September, 2009 Thanks for the advice all; it would seem that I need to call back and play hard-ball!! The girl I spoke to did also say that I could get a box off my own back and get it connected (the two cables bit people have mentioned does ring a bell but I'm not a techy!), and they would then 'switch it over' for me free of charge? Not sure if I can be doing with the hassle of that though, as I wouldn't have a clue about the two cable thing myself??!!
Son of Bob Posted 10 September, 2009 Share Posted 10 September, 2009 Go for the Virgin thing. I rung up as our Sky + box is on it's last legs and told them I was cancelling my contract and going with Virgin as they are doing a free Virgin+ HD box atthe moment. Lo and behold an Engineer was out 48 hours later with free HD+ Box!

Saint_clark Posted 10 September, 2009 Share Posted 10 September, 2009 Question from me now, just looked on the Virgin website and it seems like you cannot just have the Virgin TV thing? From what it says on there you have to have the broadband with it as well - is that true?
