England one dayers

why oh why are we so 1 dimensional. Too predictable. All these games we have played we do the same thing with power plays and now, yet again today the last power play will be taken when the bowlers are batting! Madness.

Is it possible to have a specialist one day coach in charge of the one days and a seperate coach for tests? We are clearly very bad at one day games.

I also dont understand why we still dont play our best one day players, we always pick from the same pot and almost seem scared of taking risks both on and off the pitch.

Sorry, rant over

It has been that way almost forever! The farce in the 2nd ODI regarding the powerplay was absolutely pathetic. Then they pick players like Bopara and Shah who are so out of form it is not true. For me with everyone fit the team should be something like:

Strauss

Wright/Lumb ? - this is a real problem and they keep chopping and changing.

Pietersen

Trott

Collingwood

Prior/Foster

Morgan

Broad

Rashid

Swann/Sidebottom/Bresnan- Swann for sure if the pitch is good for spinners

Anderson

Assuming that you play Swann then England bat down to 10 and the bowlers are Anderson, Broad, Swann, Rashid, Collingwood, Wright and maybe even KP though I'd prefer 5 front line bowlers. We are not really spoilt for choice TBH !

Denly is another one to consider and would be at 3 when fit with Pietersen out for quite a while still.

Edit Oh for Trecothick to open, I'd feel a lot happier and the batting would be miles better so Wright or Swann could be omitted in place of a specialist bowler, Onions, Bresnan, Sidebottom ?

Agree but who would you pick?

Dimi is injured i think?

Napier was non playing squad player in 20/20 world cup but like Dimi can hit the ball for six.

Bell is consistant failure

Key might be answer but not mobile in field.

Basically without KP and Freddie England are a poor one day side.

But we won the ashes :-)

Dimi is playing for Hants today and to be honest I'm glad he's with us as we need him !

Can't we just give up 1 day cricket? Yesterday was so painful to watch it was untrue, thank god the football was on in the evening.

Well it's going the other way isn't it. The day they stop 4/5 day matches is the day I stop following cricket, hopefully not in this lifetime though !

Too many weak or average players. I don't think Bresnan is ant better than Dimi at batting, bowling or fielding! With Flintoff out of the side, Harmison not being bothered and Anderson blowing hot and cold, they have no serious firepower or wicket takers. Sidebottom is a medium-paced bowler who is sometimes OK in English conditions and slow in the field as well. How many of the England side yesterday would make it into yesterday's Aussie side - Strauss and maybe Swann and Prior.

Not even Prior if Haddin is available, Swann or Hauritz is a close call TBH. If I was picking a one day team from England/Australia and everyone fit it might be this:

Strauss

Watson

Pietersen

Ponting

Clarke

Hussey

Haddin

Johnson

Lee

Swann/Hauritz

Bracken

And even then I'd still be reluctant to leave out Feguson and maybe even White.

Geoff Miller has to go before he creates another 5-0 Down Under next winter - I can already see the foot coming off the pedal. We've won the Ashes in spite of his daft and maverick selections, based on many years of indulging in County politics and driven by facial fit over talent and form.

Well, this has left the England ODI side with only Strauss, Jimmy and Rashid good enough to be there (KP obviously is when fit, as would Freddie be assuming he recovers). Bopara and Collingwood wouldn't even get in the Essex and Durham sides at present and no wonder Middlesex are having one of their worst ever seasons with Shah to run everyone out. Prior is at best a number 7 batter and in a ODI side, it ought to be 8, whoever is behind promoting him to 3 should be banned from cricket for life. Cork found him out in the FP final as well. Swann is OK but keeping Rashid's seat warm. Leaves a lot of pressure on Wright - who bowled well last night - and he won't score a six-filled 90 or 100 every time.

The bowling last night was alright but the batting was pathetic. If the England ODI side played in the Pro-40 competition, they wouldn't win many games and would probably finish bottom of Div 2. Doesn't that tell Miller and chums that just maybe their selections are just plain wrong? Hampshire would beat them comfortably.
