The remains of a former football club chairman have been found in a bunker in the Southampton suburb of Shirley !

Police have refused to name the individual until his one and only sympathiser identifies the body !

Oh dear, how sad, never mind :)

He'll be too busy organising Army Group Steiner;)

But of course our dear friend will be telling us all that he was never those posters (despite Ponty and co. letting the cat out of the bag).

Maybe, like Hess, he'll claim temporary amnesia;)

Some people can't let it go. Regardless of your views on Lowe to deface club property is shameful and a pathetic attempt at trying to eradicate one's personal memories of Lowe. No doubt Mr Liebherr and the team will spend some money to replace or renovate the board as even they can't rewrite history.

In any event it is ignorant in the extreme to ignore the good Lowe did and whilst he made some major errors he was not exactly alone in the past 5 years in exacerbating the club's perilious position. Lowe was culpable but so were many others and throwing money at a lost cause doesn't distinguish any guilt IMO.

It's ironic that McMenemy's picture has been returned to the boardroom. He undoubtedly delivered our greatest moment but post his managerial days did more to undermine those in the boardroom than support them IMO and latched onto Crouch like a leech when the opportunity afforded him.

McMenemy was as damaging and divisive as Lowe during the past 10 years or so and IMO contributed very little to the cause. Perhaps both their portraits should be hung alongside each other in the boardroom as a testament to the fact that a combination of their talents is what is required by a football club chairman and that IMO neither Crouch or Wilde had the talent in either sphere and whose actions never really matched their rhetoric.

It happened and vandalising any historical record isn't going to eradicate the fact. Do we rewrite history by removing the name Ali Dia from our records or Vincent Pericard as examples of great footballing decisions? Perhaps MLT for trying to make personal gains from betting at the start of a game? There has been plenty of heros and villians along the way and to physically scratch them from history shows a distinct lack of maturity to say the least.

I was going to post that the Hitler comment was a classic but this tops it.

LMFAO Your comment "best of a bad bunch..." has to be classed as mental but amusing. Lowe IMO allowed his managerial appointments to take on a somewhat Crouchesque fashion .

If only,if only .....

Crouch appointed Pearson

Lowe appointed Gray and Wigley and Sturrock and Rednapp and Poortvleit and Wotte.

If only Lowe had made his managerial appointments in a Croucesque fashion we may not now be in the third tier of English football.

still no decent guesses on the saints Youth question.

Some clues.

The player still lives locally

He was a right full back

He was blond

You're going to get hammered here for your support of Lowe, and rightly so IMO. You and your incarnations have lauded him for ages and now when it appears as if we have a club that is starting to get itself back on it's feet you say you're not aware of defending him? Sorry but that doesn't wash. You've been blind and ignorant to Lowe's faults up till this summer but now expect to debate fairly? Just like Lowe your baggage comes with you and for you that means accepting you got it wrong, antagonised people needlessly and banged a drum that got boring long before the first beat.

When I questioned you (as Sundance) you failed to answer a single question and that's the thing - you actually don't debate when it comes to having to answer a question.

As for Rupert Lowe being eradicated? If only......

Ahhhh an anti-Lowe thread. How I've missed them.

I find it funny that the vast majority of posters on here seem to have a problem with balance. Lowe was divisive and that caused damage to Saints, equally he did some good things for the club too.

Had his time come? Yes. Were his intentions honourable? I think, yes.

Was what was good for Saints FC, good for Rupert Lowe - also yes.

But it's history. The future is brighter than recent history, in part because we have a stadium and a training ground to be proud of. Rupert Lowe, in part, made that happen and, for that reason, I think he shouldn't be hated.

I think petty vandalism sums up the whole affair, from the train to the carpets, some of the issues that generated tens of thousands of posts on here, were just petty.

Going back to the orignal post.

Why the fook is there a honours board for chairmen and directors in the first place? Honours boards in football clubs are for players that have broken records and/or been chosen to play for their country. Just goes to show what a bunch of megalomaniacs have been running our club over the last few years!! Out of interest, is there also one for team managers? If so, that would have kept the plinth makers and sign writers in full-time employment.

Yes you're right; it is all about balance. But to state as Nineteen did that on balance Lowe did more good things than bad, is not balanced, it is just ludicrous, when on the minus side it includes relegation to the third division and administration.

But it's history. The future is brighter than recent history, in part because we have a stadium and a training ground to be proud of. Rupert Lowe, in part, made that happen and, for that reason, I think he shouldn't be hated.

As you say, in part he made the new stadium happen, although again in the interests of balance, it must be qualified by saying that he ****ed up Stoneham and had to be bailed out by Southampton City Council. Yes, the training facilities are good and I'll assist you further by pointing out that you omitted to also credit him with the top class catering and the Radio Station.

If people chose to hate him, I'm sure that is largely on the basis of his failure to keep us in the top flight, rather than for helping get us a new stadium.

The future is brighter because Lowe, Askham, Wilde, Crouch, Wiseman, Gordon, Richards and all those other charlatans are gone forever.

It does no harm from time to time to remember the part they all played in the club's worst period of history, but at the moment most are happy to remember how much worse things could have been and how welcome this new chapter is instead.

Surely all of us Saints fans are dreamers and fantasists at heart. ;) Despite the lowly position we now find ourselves, I still dream of a return to the top flight and fantasise about us taking Manchester United apart once again. 6-3 would be fantastic and one day we will do it again.

Wes I agree with complete sincerity to your comments in this post. The problem I have is that many focus solely on Lowe as the scapegoat of choice and ignore the roles of the others and that is hardly balanced (are my posts as unreasoned, insulting and unhinged as the hard core anti-loweites and internet thugs?) and hence the positions I choose to adopt.

We were doomed at the start of last season regardless of who was chairman or manager but I genuinely believe that Lowe's hard-nosed approach got us nearer to survival than fan-friendly rhetoric about promised takeovers or throwing money at a problem without an obvious resolution other than a stay of execution.

I know you won't agree with my last point and I know and understand your opinion that had we stuck with Pearson... I think we just need to disagree on certain aspects of the past but agree this new chapter is long overdue and most welcome. It's just a pity there has been so much bad blood spilled along the way.

Nobody can argue that the past decade or so has been dull or boring. In many ways, if one had not lived through the reality and read the book as somebody who did not know the club or its past recent history, one could be excused for holding the opinion that the events were a matter of fiction, as they were often stranger than the actual facts.

NC I try v hard to keep a balanced view on Mr Lowe but having been in his company when he was extremely rude to someone at St Mary's, for no apparent reason, perhaps my view is rather tainted.

I do accept he may have possessed business skills which would have been useful if he not been quite so egocentric.

One thing that I have not been able to get my head around from last season was the signing of Morgan Schneiderlin for a reported £1m when we were supposedly bust.

I also query the Forcast/Pulis signings but understand these may be tied in with Davies and Bale transfers but never explained as such.

Also the charade at the AGM when dear Rupert read out the anonymous letter of support was not the action of an individual with all his marbles intact.

Richmond all your points I had already addressed.

Spyinthesky - the letter was an odd decision but given the audience perhaps he felt it was necessary. In any event if Lowe's act was a man short of a marble what was Crouch's hissy fit all about or McMenemy taking his wife to fight his battles allegedly.

Wes, all very true but it would still make a great book and TV drama. Pity Leonard Rossiter is no longer with us as in his prime he would have made a great Crouch. Michael Wilde played by James Bolam, Rupert Lowe played by Jeremy Irons, Matt Le Tissier played by Hugh Grant (impossibly lovely apart from the odd faux pas), Nigel Pearson played by Vinnie Jones, Tony Lyman played by Christopher Biggins and Michael Fialka played by Sacha Baron Cohen - to name just a few. I suppose Crouch, Trant and the rest of his board could be played by The Ant Hill mMb from the Wacky Races and McMenemy by a villianous Alan Rickman or a bombastic Brian Blessed.

I think what Alan was trying to point out was that Saints doing well would also mean Rupes doing well.

Rupes ideas on what was good for saints can be argued as for what ever reason they failed.

To be honest I think much of the stratagy that Rupes tried to employ is still being done today. Work within our means and build from within. We needed the cash injection to get us onto the level we dropped off of but once we are there I dont think ML will be spunking millions and millions on us for fun.

The biggest difference I think is there is the choices that are made are different. Rupes plan was IMO a valid one but is choices to apply that plan was where he went seriously wrong. If ML has a similar plan but chooses the right people to make it a success then brilliant. So far he seems to have made the right moves and long may it continue.

..and then the circular argument regarding Lowe and his Associates continues.

The key thing for me was Lowe's decision making - but more worryingly, it was the uber-support from his backers, Messrs Askham, Richards, and the long term Saints fan, Wilde.

In any other industry a CEO with such a record of poor judgement (on management and playing staff issues) and results would not continue to receive such undoubting support.

I do however hold some grudging respect for him, simply through his sheer bloody-mindedness in thinking that he was the best person for the job.

In my view Lowe wasn't the dangerous one - it was the people behind him pulling his strings.

That maybe so but what was the alternatives at the time? Lovable and malleable (will the fans love me) Crouch? Wilde was a spent force amd unless the 3 buried the hatchet and agreed to work together Lowe's impenetrable and hard nosed approach was always the best of bad bunch. Bit like going into Greggs for a late lunch and chosing a sandwich from the remains of the earlier feeding frenzy, you've got to eat but you don't fancy anything on offer.

I don't deny he made mistakes but a tight fiscal policy wasn't one of them and the youth policy was his only viable option and bringing in the Dutch gave it initially an air of feasibility of doing something different to survive against the other also-rans in the league. Problem is of course was that JP was not up to the job and that Wotte could have done it on his own and I wish I knew the facts and Lowe's reasoning behind those appointments. The away victory over Reading was a false dawn and bought JP sometime he didn't really have IMO.

What is undeniable that after all the bad blood we are now building some foundations on a base of concrete and not quick sand but the revenues this club generates from it's fanbase will dictate it's long term ambitions as was the case this time last year albeit the ambitions now are not just about survival. That is a worry as investment won't come unless we help to prove investment is worthwhile and crowds of 17,000 are not going to cut it.

Fair enough, I get the feeling however that Admin was the only way that the revolving doors in the Boardroom were ever going to be shut.

We will get 20k + crowds, I have no doubt - once we start winning!

Ironically, a few weeks ago, Wigan had Man U at the JJB - attendance? 17,500.

It truly is amazing when you look at that and Poopey, that we can pull in the crowds in this league.

It doesn't matter how often you care to repeat it, it will not make it right. The youth policy was not the only option. In fact most would say that it was the policy of playing too many youngsters under inept Dutch lower level management that caused our demise. It was perfectly possible to have played a team of youth and experience combined without breaking the bank.

Ironic though that you applaud Lowe's tight fiscal policy and say that he was the best of the bunch to have taken the reins, but then you also say that in connection with his appointment of the double Dutch non-entities, you are unable to know what his reasoning was behind those appointments. Frankly, the entire total football exercise was total lunacy and many had the foresight to see that it would end in ignominious disaster. It might be a matter of opinion reviewing most of his tenure here as to what he did right or wrong, but this final chapter was idiotic, making it very hard to argue that he was the best of a bad bunch. I'm sure that others would have taken a more reasonable approach and employed tried and tested measures of a decent blend of players and a manager with experience at this level instead of the massive gamble that Lowe undertook.

As for the attendance levels and your assertion that unless they rise, investment from Liebherr will not follow, how do you know? Attendances are at a very reasonable level for this division and undoubtedly will rise with our further progress towards the Premiership. I get the impression from everything that ML has said that this is a 5 or 6 year plan, so it is hard to conceive that it has much to do with having a certain attendance level in the third division where the opposition is not exactly the most exciting spectacle.

Posted

The arguments are so peculiar. The fact for me is that I felt combinations of outrage, depression, incredulity etc. etc. over a period of years, and so did such a large number of supporters so that they stopped going to the games. In the end the club crashed, which was the only way to find an ending, since all those involved were looking for pay-offs and selling their shares before they were prepared to leave.

No argument in this world can change the way I felt, or the fact that I feel fine now, happy, purposeful, optimistic for the future, full of support for the club. Unless you think that this is just a random chemical reaction in my brain, which has had nothing to do with the appearance of the new regime, then accept that for many of us the old regime did horrible things to us.

Did RL really mean well? Do I really care? I'm happy and interested again, and that will do for me.

Shouty text and ganging up on individuals by cyber bullying or trying to rubbish them personally doesn't make your opinions have any more creedance than mine.

In fact Tame if I came on here and said that our Stadium was in Britannia Road you would try to argue it was off Northam Road. Correction you would latch on to the first person who came on and said - not strictly true. You are always the passenger.

LOL

You talk about cyber bullying but you are the one who bullies. I am the passenger now. Last week I was just pathetic. I wonder what I will be next week.

I just think you are a sick individual and I feel sorry for you.

Just relax, sit back and watch the daily 'debate' between SunnyD and Wes Tender it's like watching Eastleigh playing Brazil as Wes systemically demolishes the fanciful 'arguments' put forward by the forum entertainer. It's probably time some kind of handicap system was introduced as it's becoming a little embarassing. Don't get drawn into his little game and you never know he might get bored of trying to be Mr Oh-So-Controversial.

SWF is clearly his life. It's quite sad really.

Having a sense of humour is one thing, but it is genuinely disgraceful to compare Rupert Lowe to Adolf Hitler. For the vast majority of his decade as leader of the Third Reich AH (on the rebound as a failed artist) managed to unite the fractured German populace, resurrect the country to challenge in Europe, and harness the power of oratory and the media. RL (on the rebound as a sub-standard failed agent) in his decade as Chairman at SFC on the other hand, was unsuccessful in these, and many, many, many (emphasis added) other areas. Hitler also had a fanatical entourage of hopelessly camp social misfits and reactionaries who would defend his every action even after his demise; and in the face of almost universal condemnation.

Hang on...
