spyinthesky Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 Can anyone beat the mighty Saints? Davis £1m Thomas £1m (A Burley joke!!) Schneiderlin £1m (Where did Rupes find the money?) Lambert £1m Saga £0.6k Hammond £0.4k Bart £0.1k Total £5.1m plus Agents Fees/Sign on/Higher than average wages All great value!! Interested if anyone can compare with other L1 or, indeed, Championship clubs
eurosaint Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 Don't know if it's a relevant comparison but in league 2 (4th div) Sol Campbell is on £2mil per year for 5 years = £10mil which is roughly double what you just quoted for our whole team ! I have to say that I'm pleased we got the sensible businessman and they didn't !!!
Thedelldays Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 yet we still cant a beat a team made up of freebees and kids... oh well
Genk Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 You can't buy unity. When that first win comes, they will start to flow. Its all about confidence
Thedelldays Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 You can't buy unity. When that first win comes, they will start to flow. Its all about confidence same was said at man city
eurosaint Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 same was said at man city I don't really see your point ? Are you saying that when we get a bit of confidence we will become like Man City and be unbeaten in the league ????
Thedelldays Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 I don't really see your point ? Are you saying that when we get a bit of confidence we will become like Man City and be unbeaten in the league ???? no..now we cant win as we dont have unity.. the same was said about man city at the start on various talk shows.. "city may struggle due to too many ego and new players" etc.. havent they won every game..?
eurosaint Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 no..now we cant win as we dont have unity.. the same was said about man city at the start on various talk shows.. "city may struggle due to too many ego and new players" etc.. havent they won every game..? I think that Genks' point was that unity is inspired through confidence and that confidence will improve after our first win ! I think it's fair to say that you can't buy unity, but should you win a few games straight off then it's a different ball game ! (sorry, this is getting a bit fuzzy but hopefully you get my drift ??)
Saint_clark Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 no..now we cant win as we dont have unity.. the same was said about man city at the start on various talk shows.. "city may struggle due to too many ego and new players" etc.. havent they won every game..? Difference being that Man City didn't have a completely wrecked infrastructure and downbeat feeling following a relegation AND administration.
Deano6 Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 I don't think we should be making excuses like "there was a downbeat feeling" to cover up poor performances. It's for the players to lift the mood, not be dictated by it. Every relegated team is sad for a while, but take a look at who's top of the Championship (3 of the top 4) and even our own league!

If we're now comparing us to other relegated teams, then it's easy to prove why we've started so poorly. They had all pre-season to start rebuilding. We did not.

They had all pre-season to start rebuilding. We did not. pre season excuse is well and truely over.......we have played what..8 games in league and cup..all competitive... so, we should start winning regularly now then....? right..?
Crowds Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 One of the most expensive but look at Leeds snodgrass, Delphi left, bechio, beckford and charlton with jonjo, racon, sodje etc
Legod Third Coming Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 Beckford must be worth what 4 or 5 million on his own!
oxfordshire_saint Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 Beckford must be worth what 4 or 5 million on his own! He is worth that, but he was purchased from Wealdstone for absolute peanuts. I think the original post was based on the amount they were brough to the club for, as Thomas is no longer a £1m player!
SaintBobby Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 pre season excuse is well and truely over.......we have played what..8 games in league and cup..all competitive... so, we should start winning regularly now then....? right..? I don't think it's just pre season, its the players gelling. Our ideal starting eleven would now probably include 5 or 6 players who have signed in the last few weeks (2 of whom have yet to play at all). This - combined with the turmoil and fiasco of pre season - means we're likely to be much better in, say, December than we are now. I'm expecting us to average about 1.5 point a game over the next six or seven games, but to be displaying top two/three form from Xmas onwards.
Deano6 Posted 8 September, 2009 Posted 8 September, 2009 If we're now comparing us to other relegated teams, then it's easy to prove why we've started so poorly. They had all pre-season to start rebuilding. We did not. You're arguing a point I never made. I was saying you can't use "there was a downbeat feeling" for why players are not performing well.
Pilchards Posted 9 September, 2009 Posted 9 September, 2009 You could clearly say we have the highest wage bill too! Please just give us our first win so the players can earn it.
shurlock Posted 9 September, 2009 Posted 9 September, 2009 Throw in the legendary Saints depreciation rate -that big time charlies go horribly off the boil after arriving here- and I doubt the value of our team is that high. When was the last time we bought player who performed better with us than at any previous or future club, whom we got the best out of relative to their potential?
CB Fry Posted 9 September, 2009 Posted 9 September, 2009 If we're now comparing us to other relegated teams, then it's easy to prove why we've started so poorly. They had all pre-season to start rebuilding. We did not. I wonder how many of the multi-million pound members of our squad you would sacrifice for your precious "pre-season" before you then starting complaining about how weak the squad is. Would you rather have Walsall's squad and a full wonderful pre-season? And How much pre season did Paul Lambert have at Norwich? And, last question, how many bloody weeks into the season are we going to be using "lack of pre-season" as an excuse? Can we agree to stop bloody going on about it by the end of February?
david in sweden Posted 9 September, 2009 Posted 9 September, 2009 Can anyone beat the mighty Saints? Davis £1m Thomas £1m (A Burley joke!!) Schneiderlin £1m (Where did Rupes find the money?) Interested if anyone can compare with other L1 or, indeed, Championship clubs You're forgetting that we " inherited " some of these players from CCC days. when the economy was on another level. Davis Thomas Saga and Bart were all bought when in a higher league. The present side bought this season cost about +\- £2 mill. - not so much.

I think the time at which we could expect to see an improvement is about now. Although, obviously our next game is a tough one. I wouldn't want to praise our performances against Colchester, Brentford or Stockport - but I think they were a step up from the dire stuff on show at Huddersfield and Swindon. I'm only saying we've gone from a 2/10 to a 4/10, but that at least counts as progress! In my darker moments, I fear another relegation battle this season. But more realistically, while I think we'll still be in the bottom three at Xmas, we should pull away in the New Year. Scrapping to stay up would constitute a miserable under-performance (again) and relegation would eb disastrous. I think we'll end up somewhere around 12th-14th.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 9 September, 2009 Posted 9 September, 2009 If it's true that we have the most expensive squad in L1 then by definition we also have the least value for money squad as well , because this 'expensive' squad (it's worth remembering we made a profit on player trading this summer) just hasn't delivered the goods as yet . Tick-tock tick-tock tick-tock................

Theory Players come to Saints, like the area, get in a comfort zone, switch off Other players go somewhere cold, miserable and north of Newbury. Cant wait to get away, play out of their skin.

sidthesquid Posted 9 September, 2009 Posted 9 September, 2009 ..... as Thomas is no longer a £1m player! Was he ever!?
david in sweden Posted 9 September, 2009 Posted 9 September, 2009 But Thomas etc are playing I thought the point was... that we had an expensive squad for L1..? but the only players we've bought since August are the three named and then for less than £2 millionin total. No ..SO... much for L1. The " prices " of those who remained are nothing to do with Marcus Liebherrs expenditure as they were bought by the previous administration(s).

Interested if anyone can compare with other L1 or, indeed, Championship clubs Sorry to break the news - but believe it or not, Thomas cost £1.2m. That's quite the ''panic'' signing. IMO we'd be lucky to get 150k for him now. Questions have to be asked as to why GB was allowed to spend that kind of fee on 1 player? but nm...it's in the past now.

Apparently Thomas was interesting Stoke at the time but they weren't prepared to pay Burnley more than £400k. Imagine Steve Cotterell's delight when our dear departed Mr Burley offered £1m+. Grasp the cheque, bank the £600k+ before someone changes their mind and get Clarke Carlisle in for £400k who helped Burnley get up to the Prem. 'In George we trust'!!!

Of the current crop Harding on a 'free' is looking like a good signing.
sotonjoe Posted 9 September, 2009 Posted 9 September, 2009 Most 'people' can beat the Saints where it matters; we still haven't won a game.
