The off-the-field appointments and the rumours about a DoF post, possibly sometime this season, make the club look very much like a top-tier club in waiting. An ex-Prem manager, very experienced coaches, a proper scouting network and possibly another big name as DoF still to come suggest that Leibherr and Cortese were quite serious when they talked about the five-year plan. Add those personnel to the infrastructure of a premiership stadium, first-class training facilities and a potential fan base of 30,000 and there is every reason to expect a rosie future.

All that matters this year is not going down another level, and the new signings, plus returning players should be enough. I was very pessimistic when no signings were announced on the day the transfer window closed, but the subsequent news, in the squad and in the backroom team has changed my view. There is now a potential first 11 that does not have to rely on reserves who are not yet quite ready for the step up, or at least, not too many at once.

Why would they lie about the "5 year-plan"? This is not a dig at you personally, but even for someone of the wealth of Markus Libherr, the moeny spent in purchasing the club and subsequently on the team and staff (it seems to be forgetten that he is a big name in himself and probably hasnt come cheap) will represent a significant outlay.

Whatever ML's intentions are, it is in his interest for us to be successful, if we are just a billionaire's plaything he's not going to want to see us suffer more relegations costing him millions, or if he see's the clubs as an investment, we will be of significantly more value in the Prem (or at least on the brink of it).

I think also, this club was in serious trouble, in terms of finance, boardroom and on the field matters. The rot of poor management and poor decisions over a number of years may not have been known to its full extent, it is probably only coming to the fore now.

The new regime deserve plaudits for they way they have gone about everything they have done thus far, from the purchase of the club, the staff they have bought in, and they manner in which they have gone about it.

This season was always going to be about consolidation, steadying the ship and building the foundations for a future which will hopefully see us move back up the leagues with the infastructure mentioned above. Posters on here are at times hysterical or delusional, it would appear many seem to think we will be a League One equivalent of Man City, but surely our beloved neighbours down the road show what happens when you try and buy success to quickly without the proper structures in place.

Is that really what people want?

I agree with both the first posts. The professionalism of the operation so far has been exemplary. ML and Cortese just get on with things quietly and with dignity, IMO not having put a foot wrong so far. Just when one thinks that the transfer window has slammed shut, leaving us a little short still, along comes the terrific news on Waigo. Just when it seems that the backroom staff had been sorted, along comes the additional welcome news about Wally Downes. When that seemed to be the end for now, along comes the rumour that it is intended to add a Director of football too.

Looking at the calibre of the backroom staff, they have all had experience as managers at one time or another. Looking at the players, again, several have been captains of their teams. We are not just appointing ability, but also experience and leadership qualities.

It all bodes very well.

WE all just need to be patient.

strange when i first starting watching in the very early 60's the club had NEVER been in the top flight but Ted build slowly, as the city itself grew, and we got there.

the parallels are there now although i not sure if the city is still growing but WE WILL get back within 5 years

I do a bit of work with the MoD and they have this phrase 'sustainment' which I personally don't believe is a real word.

But if it is, that's what we have to build - sustainment.

Not a get back quick and then yo yo around the leagues approach, but an infrastructure and squad that is capable of mounting a challenge this year, next year and beyond.

Yes, the players may change, but ideally the manager and coaching staff won't.

everyone please be patient - please

as long as we JUST SURVIVE it will be a great achievement..i mean, it matters not that we have an England U21, The leagues top scorer who cost a million quid, a polish international, a million pound keeper who is the best in the league, a million pound defender, a rival captain, players like jaidi and harding, top ten prem facilities, large revenue coming in from nig crowds, premiership proven manager, ex league 1 managers as back room staff...

I mean, what else could we possibly expect other than JUST survival...

And to think the majority on here were saying a mere 6 months ago that nothing good would ever come out of going into administration. I bet my son's pocket money that in 5 years time we'll be better off than if we'd managed to avoid administration in April.

Delldays....we have AP (who I trust by the way) and ML (who I ****ing love) we also have other people (all of which are like family to me) what we dont have is a pre season.....be realistic PLEASE we will come good just be patient and trust. It will take years and years and years to clean out the evil times. 6 years and we can compete for CCC in 50 we can talk about the prem.

At the moment we are worse off. If we had folded we would have 0 points right now....as it stands we have -6.

We should have folded.

if it is 50 years i might as well pack up now as i will be 105, i really believe we can be back in 5 years because this club is all about momentum once we start winning, the crowds go up , money rolls in, better players come in, we keep winning.

we have done it before why not now, yeah there are some moaners , there always have been, only difference is now they moan on the net whereas it used to be in the pubs.

one thing stays the same though a bit of success and they will alll want cup tickets etc

I believe the original post was underlining the 5 year plan, in no way denigrating the proposal. As for being in serious trouble, we were that close to not even being awarded a place in the Blue Square.

But what we are seeing now, I really doubt will be good enough for the Premier, with big changes being required if we aspire that high. Take someone like Mick Macarthy and co, have done an excellent job to this point. But I would not hesitate in getting rid of them if I was serious about staying in the Premier and advancing. Liebherr may have a different attitude to life, but I am not so sure about Cortese who is pulling all the strings.

....I wish I had had an excuse to miss colchester at home!!!!..... but by Tuesday the gloom of the frustration at not being able to defeat colchester has lifted somewhat, and I am looking forward to us turning Charlton over on Saturday to get our first win and inflict their first defeat!!!.... hows that for being positive!![-o

Ha.Thats exactly how i feel.

Im always fed up and moody after a defeat or sometimes a draw(such as Saturday),but give it a day or two and im suddenly feeling positive about our next game.

Thats part of being a Saints fan i suppose!

I think you will find that the points deduction would have only been applied last season if we had gained enough points to avoid relegation. As we didn't, the points were carried over to this season.

It's all very well, but the fact of the matter is, even given the advantages outlined above:

We are the only League 1 club without a win

We have scored fewer, or just as few goals as any other team

So something has to change.

Do not play: Lallana, Paterson, Mills, Schneiderlin, James, Thomson, Mellis or Lancashire.

Do not continue the mistakes of last season (ie play the kids)

These players have forgotten how to win - they are SCARED

Play the seasoned professionals, just like other teams in League do - we may just survive.

Posted
- we may just survive.

any team that spends like we have in this league, has the players we have, has the manager we have, has the facilities we have and...has the money we have, should NOT be thinking about "just surviving"..

that is like asking villa or spurs to just stay up in the premiership...

OK, Theoretically I agree with you,

BUT, this is reality.

Villa or Spurs don't have a minus 10 deduction to contend with though...

It's true. -10 points or not -10 points...we should be well clear at the end of the season. (IMO)

If we do just survive then it'll just have been another season regularly loosing and failing to win football matches.

How is that supposed to aid us in really going forward next year? We need to build momentum this season and then take that through to next year.

''Just'' avoiding relegation, IMO, just continues this unambitious losing rot we have at this club.

but reality is...we have all that..we ARE the biggest spenders in the league, we DO generate the alot of money in this league, we DO have a rich owner, we have GOT some of, if not the best facilities in the league, we HAVE a million pound keeper, defender, midfielder and striker in the team, we have INTERNATIONALS at the club, we have the manager with PREMIERSHIP quality in charge, we HAVE ex league 1 managers in the backroom staff..

at least 20 teams would dream of anything like that...just dream

do you not think we should be beating teams with what we have regularly from now on..?

if you dont then I would say you are VERY unambitious and do not realise what we have compared to most clubs in this league..

-10 or not...we SHOULD be able to be well clear by the end with what we have to work with...well clear...not saying we can go up but really putting our mark come the run in ready for next season..

failure to gain promotion by any means next season will (imo) cost pardew his job...sorry but that is how football works

failure to do so will obviously there is something very wrong at the club...and it cant be blamed on a lack of pace or something simplistic like that.

Nothing to be sorry about. If we are not promoted by the end of next season, Pardew will have under-delivered and then some!!!!

I'm not happy with Markus Liebherr at all.

He needs to show real commitment by turning up for matches in a replica kit and Saints baseball cap. Perhaps grow a sleazy looking little goatee too.

Also, if he's really serious, he could become a doctor. I believe these are all the requirements to be a complete and utter joke, I mean competent and serious, chairman.

Posted

I'm firmly in the "It will take time and we must be patient camp". I also did not believe for one minute that we could be serious promotion contenders this season, we were too big a mess, yet it is right that the fans expect and the employees aim for promotion.

My only concern remains the same, we may be PL club in FL1, but we were a PL club in the CCC. The priority right now though IMHO is to be a bloody good FL1 club, as we won't ever get out the league with a PL attitude on the pitch...

Which is why I am confident the players we have signed are suitable for the job that needs to be done now. Just wish they'd start showing it in the resuts column!

Posted
What's this "Premiership" people keep talking about ? Is it a rugby thing ? I'm all for the Premier League myself...

Don't worry, it will be re-badged (yet again) by the time we get there!! 'Premiership", Premier League", "Super League", "League Division One" could be anything in 5 years time!!

Posted

The club probably does have promotion next year as a target, but fans should not see that as the difference between failure and success. People may have noticed that when we play matches, there is always another team on the field. Quite a few of those teams have promotion as a target as well! So its not just a matter of playing well, you have to do better than most of the rest. If there are a couple of other strong teams, you have to be even stronger, so there can be no guarantees. Top six next season should be the expectation, but for promotion it may need luck as well, and it may need all five years to get close to returning to the top flight.

Posted

I'm very happy with how the club is being run now, just shows L**e up for the small time charlie that he was.

If we could haul ourselves up to mid table by Xmas and have a good bash at the play offs by the season's end then I'd be really happy.

I don't think we're too far off getting a run of wins now and I have a sneaky suspicion that we might scrape a victory at Charlton.

Mid table should be a 'par for the course' expectation this season. If we spend the season flirting with relegation with the players we have then serious questions would have to be asked of AP.

Posted

Its definitely going to be a marathon and not a sprint.........in credit by mid November ........off the bottom by January should be the target in my view..... realistic in my view, but no doubt there will be many screaming for a management change every single week before then unless 3 points are on the board every Saturday..........so they just have to tolerated whilst the realists watch the slow turnaround

why do you say that when it has not been the case thus far this season...

it aint gunna happen

I am very happy at the way the club is being run I dont think anyone can argue it is less than professional, they are getting on with the changes needed to take us forward and I have no doubt we are on the right track.

I am happy with AP and his new signings all the players he has brought in are a level above what we had and will enhance the team.

The only disapointment is the start we have made I didnt have any dreams of promotion for this season but I did think we would have a lot more points on the board.I am not calling for any changes and believe the results will come in time.

We are a club that needs some stability and if it takes all this season to rebuild I dont care, finishing mid table would be success this term but I want promotion next season and if we can let the people in the job do the job I think we will get promotion next season the last thing we need is more change.

The hang up on the past that some of us Saints fans have is depressing. RL will still be blamed for poor results in 5 years….give it up guys.

Thankfully the players are not as obsessed by some on here.

The other bizarre thing for me is that those with the biggest hang-up on the past have the cheek to call themselves the ‘positive’ ones?
