7 goals conceded makes us a top 6 defence. 3 of those at huddersfield with perry and thomas and now with Trotman and jaihidi (sp.) at the back things will get even tighter.

the key now is goals. we have no pace up front. The opposition defence can push right up and squeeze the space in midfield. As i see it Papa and his pace will give defenders something to think about, they will need to play deeper and thus creating more space in midfield. Im hoping the extra space created will give the likes of lallana morgan and hammond who are generally composed on the ball the time to dictate the play.

I was massively frustrated yesterday but I can see the bigger pictuer and the ship is turning.

Two things that give me hope with Pardew is his track record and his signings here. His track record is pretty good, certainly for a League 1 Club and despite what happened at Charlton. However, it is his signings that have really given me hope. Trottman, Lambert, Hammond, Harding, have been excellant additions. It is the guys who were at the Club who benefitted from Jan and Wotte's revolutionary coaching set up, who are letting us down. When the chips are down, they appear to be clueless. Surely he could expect an International striker to contribute a little bit more than Saga has, and the great French white hope Morgan has hardly set the third flight alight.

This Club was rotten to the core and if anyone thinks it can be turned around after half a dozen games then they're deluded.

It's a good thing that Pardew is the new guy's man, after the start he's made. Had Wotte remained there would be speculation about him constantly and he'd proberly have been moved on by now, starting the whole "after you Claude" managerial roundabout all over again.

We've tried the other approach, now let's give this guy time and get behind him............

spot on we are looking more solid and hopefully with papa and lee holmes due back will give us the firepower we are lacking at the moment.

I think people, me included are starting to get impatient. I saw us play against Swindon a few weeks ago and I'm sorry to say we haven't really improved at all. Although we now seem to have a competent back four, we are totally clueless going forward.

The only difference between the game at Swindon and yesterday against Colchester was that Swindon gave us much MUCH less space all game. After Col U went down to 10 men they gave us acres. But even so at half time I said to my old man that the second half will see us huff and puff and not get anywhere. Same predictable Saints, and just like last year. As far as I can see, not many things have changed any we are still turning out way way to many lightweight youngsters.

I'm sick and tired of being able to predict what is going to happen in our games. It was so painful watching us desperately trying to mount an attack yesterday, and why Pardew brought on Jake Thompson is beyond me, as he added nothing to our "threat". I've never seen anything so clueless and pointless. Mellis is embarrasing.

So many things need to change in our game, and as the weeks and games pass, the words on the Charlton forums when we got Pardew are ringing louder and louder in my ears. Is he really up to it?

God I hope so, and things better happen soon. Rome was built eventually after all...

Please tell me this is a joke

Just to confirm, I am still behind Pardew, I think with a full squad, our new additions and a tad more time I can see no reason why we cant drastically improve.

I'd like to see a smaller squad, some of the kids out on loan and a stable 11 played every week barring injury! But I think managers don't play like that any more sadly...

The OP is totally nuts. Markus bought a club that could hardly be called a club anymore, where there were no good players left, where there was distrust amongst the remaining staff and players, where there weare no coaches, where there was one of the lousiest managers in our history.

He then pumps in serious money to make the club debt free, gets the services of a well respected and proven English manager, provides serious money to buy 7 or 8 players, and now the OP expects everything to magically work well together? I for one am just grateful to even HAVE a club, to see the improvements (however slow you may think they are), and to know that we have a future again.

I have accepted the obvious pleas of mitigation ie three weeks late start after the Pinnacle fiasco, needing time to bring players in etc and find his own team. However AP now has brought players in and assembled a squad that would be the envy of most, if not all, L1. CLUBS.

So no more excuses, time to deliver. We need points this month.

Sadly, yesterdays result brought home comments on here after Stockport, that there is an uneasy feeling of deja vu about the start of AP's reign, reminiscent of Burley's tenure.

We shouldn't even be setting our sights on survival this season but it looks like thats what it will be and if we do go down - Pardew has to go.

Pathetic and totally inaccurate comments.

Indeed. Who could possibly criticise a manager with a stronger squad, playing against 10 men for over an hour, at home and failing to win.

But yesterday's squad was actually weaker than the previous weeks. No Saga. No Murty and neither of the deadline signings. If we are to believe that they will drastically improve the side, why are people getting so worked up before they have kicked a ball in anger.

We were carp last weekend and (surprise, surprise) we still are.

I must be in a minoroty as I didn't think we were crap. By comparison to Chelsea, yes we aren't good. By comparison to 2003, nowhere near. But crap?

Ineffective in the final third, yes. Lacking pace, yes, but crap no.

Back four solid and never looked in danger. Midfield, lacking width and creativity until Morgan and Mills came on, then ineffective because of poor delivery into the box. Front, ineffective because of previous statement.

I think I agree with your sentiment though. Once we have a wholly new team from last season (Davis, Perry, and possibly James/Lallana aside) I think we could win a lot of matches!

As I said yesterday on another thread,if turnover of managers is the reason/excuse for failure why aren't spurs or man city down with us?,spurs being the prime example......

Since our promotion together in 78 spurs have had 24 managers to our 18,they have won 7 major trophies and been runners up 4 times (all before redknapp),they have been in the top flight for 30+ years......24 different managers hasn't shackled their consistent progress.

So bollix it ain't,changing managers is the norm for 99% of the football league and it is also a myth that changing managers = failure.

You need to find a more credible excuse for our sh1tty little, run of the mill club.like the majority of the league we cannot afford the luxury of stability.

Cause its easy to compare Saints against Spurs the same spurs side that up until this season was the biggest spender in the Prem over the previous 3 seasons. When exactly have we had silly money to spend. What is our transfer spend record for a player now compare that against Spurs no where bloodly near each other.

And as for the negative So called supporters, try being a little more positive for a change. Yes we haven't won a league game yet this season but we 3 games without defeat.

As for not beating 10 Man Team yesterday what did you expect. They got a new manager so they will be doing there best to make sure they are in the new managers thoughts..they lose a player early on so its then backs against the walls most teams will struggle to get past a team like that.

Posted
I would suggest some of the players have been poor. Pardew doesn't control them all with remote control. There's only so much he, or any manager, can do. Who are we to say whether he's been doing the right things or not? He might well be doing a brilliant job behind the scenes and the players just aren't doing it on matchday.

Will, did you say the same about Wotte?

I very much doubt it, so what's the difference between last season under Wotte and this season under Pardew?

Kelvin said on more than one occasion, that Wotte had prepared the team really well, but that the team hadn't put it into practice on the pitch.

If Pardew is not having an effect on the players through his words, actions or tactics, why shouldn't he take the same stick that Wotte did?

What makes one under performing team different from the other?

As for those asking what others would have done with the team yesterday, well I wouldn't have gotten into that position, as i'd have signed the players we needed when they were more readily available, and would have worked on strengthening the defence and our attack a lot sooner.

Pardew made a rod for his own back by not acting more swiftly in the transfer market. We still have a squad which is lacking any quality in depth, if Waigo does have pace, and gets injured we'll be back in the same situation of being a one dimensional team again.

How exactly was Pardew slow in making signings. would you rather he came in and just brought 11 random players regardless of what he may have available at the club already.

Pard's needed time to assess what players he was..which players he thinks will do the job now and those that should improve and those that he feels are just not up to it. Then needs to take this to the owner with his assessment of the team stating what areas need improving the most and what areas he thinks that we might be able to get away with for the time being.

And he's had to do all the above while taking the training as well as looking at the bigger picture of the club to see what needs to be improve to enable him to do his job to the best of his ability...Things like a scouting network and an assistant maybe.

This thread deeply saddens me to call myself a saints fan with so much negativity in one place.

Just remember Pard's is having to re-build a squad as well as help re-build a club that has been asset stripped for years. Give the guy a chance ffs.

His tactics are ok in the way of subs what lets him down is his tactics on the pitch. We got one of the best strikers in this league in Lambert who is a goal scorer and not a target man and AP keeps playing insisting to keep punting the damn ball long towards him. Play down the wings get crosses into the box and we'll score goals, for that you need proper wingers not CM's playing there cause he wants to fit them into the team.

Im not saying he should be sacked but if we can all see the problem why cant he?

I listened to the game on solent so I did not have the advantage of actually seeing the game on saturday but I could not believe AP said we had enough chances to win two games of football! By my reckoning colchester nearly scrored 2 or 3 OG's which was the nearest we came to scoring other than that we were feeding on scraps. we lack creativity. we have thebest striker in the league with otu doubt but with out service what can he do? It seems that mellis is not up to the job yet nor is patterson IMO. Bring in Saga and Papa.

We have been out of the prem whilst spurs have been spending so yes there is no comparison, what you failed to read is that we started on the same course 30 years ago and I was proving a point to all those idiots who think that our problems are down to a high turnover of managers.....it isn't. Our problems are solely down to money, money not invested in the team, the unwillingness to pay decent players decent wages, not giving money to managers to spend in the transfer Market etc etc.........I'm a great believer in 'if you pay peanuts you get monkeys' .

Our unwillingness to compete led to our downfall,we didn't speculate to accumulate and our policy for the last 15 years has been to 'go cheap' .....wigley,gray,sturrock,dodd/gorman springs to mind and the list of cheap crap players is a lot lot longer and sadder.

Now to your last point......you say that the colchester players were trying to impress their new manager and this is the reason why we couldn't break them down,we have a new manager and I havnt seen any signs of our players trying to compete for his affections.

They are either crap players or they don't give a fook what he thinks.

Few managers are fortunate enough to manage a team that is consistently successful, and we constantly see a manager praised for winning promotion who is then sacked a year later for not doing the same again. Pardew is as good a manager as any other but he does have too many inadequate players in his squad. Its hard to say that is his fault when he's only been here for two months. Maybe he should have acted faster to persuade the owners of the need to recruit but if he'd come in demanding large sums of money, he may not have got the job.

The team is performing woefully but there are two or three players available, who did not play on Saturday, who may strengthen it. Pardew must know better than any of us on here what the weaknesses and he's bound to make changes within the scope of who he has in the squad. BUt ultimately, he does need to replace the reserve standard players who he is having to still use in the first team. I doubt that he can go public on that without making those players perform even worse, so we do have to wait and see what he does.

Using your poll criteria, Parkinson would have been sacked from Charlton last season. Yet now that he's winning games having had TIME to build his team, people on here seem to be holding him out to be a success that we should be aspiring to. Why not just go the whole hog and write it into his contract, 'at least 3 wins in the first 10 games or we'll get someone else in. We will ignore any signs of improvement during this period'

AP's substitutions were spot on IMO. Mellis had been largely ineffectual in the first half and was the key substitution Mills added some real threat down the left after 5 minutes when he looked a bit rusty. Schneiderlin also looked good too in the centre and Thomson added width to the right that was lacking. Paterson had huffed and puffed and achieved little and as there was not another striking option because Saga was away, the alternative was indeed to put Lallana up front to see whether he could either score himself, or provide the chances for Lambert. The trouble was that we attempted strikes too often from distance and should have put the ball into the box at every opportunity.

I reckon that Saga could have had two goals, if he was available. We are missing Murty. It is not that Thomas isn't doing OK at RB, moreover that he does not possess a threat going forward up the right wing. A fast player like Weigo would have been ideal in that match, either as a pacy striker running onto balls cleared quickly from defence, or as a winger. Jaidi would have further strengthened the defence, not that it was needed agianst Colchester, apart from their shot against the bar.

So all those calling for Pardew to take the blame for his tactics, are wide of the mark. Any calling for his head based on the team's performance ought to step back and debate whether or not the players brought in were bad buys or not. As far as I am concerned, the weakest player so far is Mellis, who came from Chelsea and who will probably develop into a fantastic player over time, but who is not the right player for us in this division and with those players around him right now. All those other signings are really far better than we could have expected under Lowe, even in the Fizzy Pop. For the third division, they are immense signings. With a fit Murty and with Jaidi and Wiego, I believe we have the best team in the division by far.

It is too early to make judgements when there were delays in signing the players because of circumstances beyond his control

Absolutely. Some talk of us as if we're a big club. We're not, and never have been. It might seem that way considering the size of the stadium and infrastructure.....but the only thing that truely matters is on the pitch, and we've always been underperforming minnows that occasionally punched above out weight (Strachen-era).

We're in League One because we're crap on the pitch, and its nothing new.

That doesn't mean we don't have ambition to better ourselves...its just not our style though. Apart from 1976 and 2003, we've not had a lot to shout about.

Where's this then? I haven't seen one single post from anyone "demanding" (or even asking) for anyone to be sacked. NOT ONE ANYWHERE.

Bet you can't find one either.

What is on this forum are a million dullard posts like this one ranting on and on at people for not dancing congas of gratitude in the streets for a team that is rock bottom of the league and would be even if we didn't have a points deduction.

No wins in six when Yeovil, Exeter, Bristol Rovers and Gillingham have managed to win games in this league. It isn't this incredibly difficult challenge that the management team need six months to work up to. John Barnes can win a game at this level for christ's sake. Stockport County can win games. Walsall, Oldham, Leyton Orient can win games.

It's not the holy grail of football and how dare we demand such unreasonable impossible things. It's winning games in League One.

People should be complaining. They'd be mad not to. Get over it.

Parkinson is now winning games in a division BELOW the one he was losing them in. Using this analogy we will start winning if we keep Pards and go down to L2 :(

The problem is that whilst people will agree that the squad and backroom setup needed time to gel, we started 10 points from safety, and are now 11 away after 6 games, that is a backwards step, regardless of how many 'green shoots of recovery' you might think you see. Not winning can become as much as a habit as winning, and somewhere else on this forum somebody posted that Saints have only won 8 of their last 38 games at SMS. and any success we might have must be built on solid home form.

And whilst it is possible to look at what our potential best starting 11 might be, ( including Papa, Saga, Holmes, a fit Murty, etc ), it is patently obvious that a line-up with only 7 of our "best" 11 struggles, particularly in front of goal.

Whilst there are sufficient points still to play for, none of the other teams in this league will look to give us an easy ride. A finish that sees us mathematically safe with 4 games to play, ( about 57 points from the next 36 games ), will do for me.

yeah and Parkindson came off last season with a good winning side. They did not have a summer of administration and losing some usefl players, and Pinnacle of course.I stated that Charlton would do well as they had stability and did look decent at the 3end of last season.it was obvious we needed to have a good start and I was like a few others wanting us to get some players in quicker so we could get the -10 gone.it hasnt happened and soon we could be 15 points away from safety. We are fortunate a lot of clubs are still withing striking distance. We need a goalscorer and get that first win, after that e wil then claw our way back.

nick........just a moote point...........we have just bought one of the leagues top goal scorers from last year..we have Saga, he who 'will score goals for fun' in this division..........we have the goal scorers....what we need is a White witch....then maybe we can rid our ground of this curse we seem to be under!!!!!!!!

Not in panic mode at the moment but remain concerned about no wins, now not so concerned about the defence, so, if our goal scorers can fulfill expectation should see that win sooner rather than later.

I understand frustration but not booing, some may suggest it is the only way to demonstrate frustration and if it was done at the end of the 90 it had no affect on the game, however, we are still in the period where events of pre season can be used as an excuse/reason for where we sit but that must come to an end soon.
