hypochondriac Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 What a great player. Every cloud and all that...
S-Clarke Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Class player, wins everything and reads the game so well. Def. the high point for me today, alongside harding who i thought played well again! I think defensively today we were completely spot on - no issues there, it's just what happened further up the pitch...! i.e nothing. Jaidi and Trotman at the back should mean we don't concede too many goals. now we need to learn how to create chances for lambo...
L1Minus10 Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 By no stretch of the imagination is Trotman a class player. He's ok in a limited way and he does a job in this league. he'd be shocking against a mobile attack.
kpturner Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 I would say he looks solid and reliable, which is good enough ATM "class" - dunno about that really. John Terry is class.
S-Clarke Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 I would say he looks solid and reliable, which is good enough ATM "class" - dunno about that really. John Terry is class. ok maybe i overdid it with ''class'' but i still think he's a very talented defensive player - hope we can keep him for the season.
70's Mike Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 By no stretch of the imagination is Trotman a class player. He's ok in a limited way and he does a job in this league. he'd be shocking against a mobile attack. but we are in this division
Rebel Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 I thought he looked quite cultured today - didn't put a foot wrong really and played the ball out from the back. We should buy him if we can Thomas played well too - with Harding, Murty, Perry and Jaidi we are looking good at the back still feel we could do with a proper 20 something right back to give us a bit more going forward
hamster Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 I thought that the defence communicated and moved to cover each other really well today. I particularly enjoyed seeing Thomas pushing up in the first half, although it proved fruitless.
Hopkins Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Not at all confident with him at the back. Looks completely unsafe with the ball at his feet and trys to be to clever, for example leaving the ball thinking the lino was going to give offside only for the striker to walk the other way and Trotman leaves it to run out. Thought he was average at best today. How can you say he won everything in the air? Seriously? Clive Platt beat him and Perry time and time again. Can't wait for Jaidi and Thomas to be at the back instead.
niceandfriendly Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Certainly an over-reaction to call him class and great. He is neither of those, but he is doing okay at the moment and I'm pleased with him in the team. However, whenever we're in a sticky position and need someone to pass to, he looks or runs away. He never wants the ball played to him which just shows that he can't play football - all he wants to do is head it or hoof it away. At times that's fine but I'd prefer it if he at least had some ability with the ball at his feet.

I left the ground not feeling very positive at all, but am now starting to see that our defence did pretty well, a few wayward passes out of defence, but don't think Colchester troubled them as much as you'd expect from a 'top' team in this league. We let ourselves down imo, a golden opportunity to get an easy peasy win today, made easier with the red card, but only 2 points lost due to Colchester being rubbish (as I predicted earlier this week I might add). Still reckon we are an improving squad and predict that Colchester will struggle from what I saw today. Nice supporters though. btw my 4-0 prediction was tfic
Genk Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Thomas/Murty---Jaidi--Trotman---Harding Our defence is now sorted. Trotman does a job very well for us. I expect Jaidi to do the same, if not better.
Saint_clark Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Really? I thought he looked a lot shakier today than he normally has. Missed a few headers and let his man get past him a fair few times. (I think he is great by the way, just giving my opinion on this one individual performance).
oxfordshire_saint Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Neal Trotman is Titus Bramble. A big lad who can put it about and win some headers, but prone to clumsiness and a lack of awareness. Even on the physical side he was second best against Clive Platt in the first half. He will give away a few penalties this season.
Block 5 Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Not at all confident with him at the back. Can't wait for Jaidi and Thomas to be at the back instead. I still maintain that Thomas is gash, even though today's performance was better than usual. Mind you, he nearly made one of his trademark passes straight to an opposing striker......... If you rate Thomas over Trotman then you clearly know nothing. Wait a minute, I've just noticed your location is Jermaine Wright's fan bus. Well that's cleared that up: you are obviously mental.
musesaint Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 What a great player. Every cloud and all that... Brilliant today We need to keep him for as long as we can ...and buy him if possible (though unlikely) ...shows maturity and class
Legod Third Coming Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 I would say he looks solid and reliable, which is good enough ATM "class" - dunno about that really. John Terry is class. John Terry is slightly worse than Terry Butcher. The trouble with today is that kids wouldn't know class if it bit then on the ass! Class centre backs were players like Bobby Moore who could tackle with amazing grace and then lay the ball to someone on a platter. John Terry is just a typical modern-day footballer - chucks himself into everything and slaps his club crest every ten minutes.
Rasiak-9- Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Yeah the defence is pretty much sorted, in as much as Davis Thomas - Jaidi - Trotman - Harding is a good enough defence for a promotion-chasing team in this league. We just need to sort out our wingers and strikers really. If PWN'd (lol at his abbreviation) is decent then really all we need are two decent wingers and we're pretty much sorted. The wins will come and whilst the results are disappointing I really don't feel we're threatened by relegation at all.
Bailey Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Trotman is by no means a footballing centre-half, but he certainly wins his fair share of headers. He's a good player to have in the side, especially in this division. If he continues to play as he did today, then I'd like to see him stay here until the end of the season at the very least.

brmbrm Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Jeez. Some people slag the man off because he ain't the best in the world??? Course not! He's playing England division 3, and in context he is an exellent player.

Legod Third Coming Posted 6 September, 2009 Posted 6 September, 2009 So I am a kid then. Lmfao! You must be my friend if you think Terry is class. Frank Lampard is class. Terry is slow, can't pass, can't dribble. But he is stood in front of one of the best keepers in the world behind the best midfield in the world. Blimey, even I would look good...

But he is stood in front of one of the best keepers in the world behind the best midfield in the world. Blimey, even I would look good... How often does lampard play centre half, and why is dribbling a required attribute for a centre half? That aside, you contrived to entirely miss the point. A premier league centre half who is a shoe-in for his international team is more likely to be described as class than is a young CH playing in the 3rd tier - ala Mr Trotman (who I happen to think is a decent player). I agree with you, but just don't think Terry is class. Class is a quality that Terry doesn't have whereas Lampard does was kinda my point. If you wanted me to name a class centre-back, I would say Rio Ferdinand at his very best. Trotman is excellent and as good as we could hope for in this league.

Trotman is excellent and as good as we could hope for in this league. TBF, out of the two CH at chelsea, i would say that Dr Cavalho is the one with culture and prefigree, Terry is there as the ball winner and does his job very effectively. Football is a game of partnerships imo. And CH is one where you need a solid, ball winning brute, and another that is more of a footballer. That is Cavalho and Terry, Vidic and Ferdinand etc etc. I believe you have missed the point slightly, Terry is an excellent ball winner, one of the very best, he would probably tackle with his face if he had to. Every team in the world would take terry off of chelsea's hands, and in that respect i believe he is world class. Ferdinand is a fantastic player, but far too prone to disappear into world lala land, as we saw in the england game a month or so ago. Also, Lampard is over-rated
Greedyfly Posted 7 September, 2009 Posted 7 September, 2009 Slightly missing the point here but I am not in anyway a Terry fan. Would, for arguments sake, say that Vidic is by far and large the best CB in the English league. In fact I often feel that he carries Ferdinand at times as Ferdinand is prone to more than one brain snap. As far as other candidates go; that Hangeland looks the real deal at Fulham and I also like Carvalho. Would have had Carragher in there to but he seems to have lost a little something.

John B Posted 7 September, 2009 Posted 7 September, 2009 Big Jake now there was a centre half. Yes my favorite Saints Centre half sadly died young he took no prisoners http://wapedia.mobi/en/John_McGrath_(footballer_born_1938)
kpturner Posted 7 September, 2009 Posted 7 September, 2009 ....and who said football was all about opinions
Greedyfly Posted 9 September, 2009 Posted 9 September, 2009 Vidic is vastly over-rated. Against anyone with pace and guile, he looks lost (see Eto'o and Torres). Good against normal Prem players, but there is no way he is better than Rio. Could not disagree more. Commanding and strong with more pace than Rio...as for Eto'o he practically makes all CBs look average, including Rio. He's that sort of player. RF on the other hand is a lumbering buffoon who's lack of intelligence is slightly (though not completely) conteracted by a semblance of footballing experience. And that is about the only nice thing I could say about him. He's prone to at least one mistake a game, he's not overly commanding (though he likes to talk a lot of ****e on the pitch) or strong, whinges like a little *****, and really is the most stupid human being to have ever kicked a football. Not by any means the worst defender ever (not even close - that title easily goes to Bramble) but certainly wouldn't be in my top 5 prem defenders now or ever.

Terry is not as good at Vidic for my money. He is painfully slow and not a great footballer but compensates be being an 'all action' ball winner by humping and heading, sticking himself in anywhere. This is not 'class' in my terms. I would say he is about the same standard as Terry Butcher and just a bit better than Terry Fenwick. By contrast, I agree with you about Carvalho. And he doesn't need to be all action because of his ability to read the game and respond/predict accordingly. His tackles look less committed maybe because he simply got to the right place quicker. He has 'class'. I am sure everyone who could afford Terry would have him because the world has a shortage of good Centre Halves and don't get me wrong, he is very good. But class? What about his play lifts him above workmanlike??

What about his play lifts him above workmanlike?? This all comes down to how you define class i suppose. I agree, Terry is not a footballer in the sense that he is not as composed on the ball as many players etc etc. However simply for the job he does, and does so effectively, i believe makes him a class above many other players. Vidic is a fantastic player but i think i would still prefer Terry, and TBH out of all the defensive partnerships in the Prem, i would still rather have Terry/Cavalho. You cannot say that Terry is not a fantastic ball winner, plays with his heart, plays with passion. He is not, and never will be a technically gifted player, but for the job he does he does not need to be, that is what his defensive partner brings, and what makes them so effective. Terry to be the bruiser, and RC to mop up behind him basically.

Terry, Carvalho, Vidic, Ferdinand etc all play in the same position at the top level, and all have their own attributes that make them stand out from the crowd - especially when compared to a decent CB in L1. This point came about just because somebody described Trotman as class (bet he wishes he hadn't bothered). In the context of SFC or even L1, he probably is class (whatever that means), but in the context of football as a whole (i.e. including the top level) he has a long way to go before he can warrant such an accolade.

Aye, and Trotman is good in this league, no doubt. Maybe even Championship level.
Hopkins Posted 9 September, 2009 Posted 9 September, 2009 The fact that there is a genuine debate on a saints forum about whether John Terry and Frank Lampard are any good just goes to prove how retarded most of our fans actually are. John Terry and Frank Lampard are two of the best players in the world. The England captain and the best goal scoring centre midfielder in the world. Idiots. Just lock this thread its gone beyond absurd. Seriously, the people debating this subject should just go sit in the corner and think about what they have done. You should be ashamed of yourselfs.
Saints67 Posted 9 September, 2009 Posted 9 September, 2009 I don't know what the recall clause is in Trotmans loan (if there is one) but there are rumours going round here up north that St. Ledger will be loaned out to 'Boro (with an option to buy). This means Preston will be a centre half short. They have brought a bloke in from Wolves but they'll have no cover should anything happen to him.

I'm sorry but that's just completely wrong. As previously mentioned the centreback position is about partnerships and these two complement each other perfectly. Rio does occasionally switch off (not very often anymore) but has plenty of ability and Man Utd always look more solid with him in the team. Without him their defence is slow in the middle and, because of their lack of pace, Vidic, Evans, Brown and O'Shea don't have the same ability to cover. That said I am a massive fan of Vidic and given the choice of any two centrebacks in the league I would take both of them.

''The loan extends until the transfer window opens at the start of January and with North End unable to recall the player, Trotman is likely to get a good run of games under his belt.''

I can now tell these PNE wind-up merchants to wind their necks in.
CougarSaint Posted 9 September, 2009 Posted 9 September, 2009 Meanwhile, on the subject of Saints centre-halves, if you're talking about class, i.e. the ability to defend and the ability to bring the ball forward, my vote is firmly for Mark Wright. But we're not in that division now and I would welcome a centre back eho could defend and play
Greedyfly Posted 10 September, 2009 Posted 10 September, 2009 Fair play to Bramble though who under Steve Bruce sorted his game out MASSIVELY.
