Micky Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Look on the bright side and kid yourself for a little bit longer - just assume that our league is upside down right now. Go on - you'll feel a whole lot better...
RedArmy Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 I never want to see Patterson in the starting lineup again.
Verbal Kint Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Given that it didn't work I think we can criticise that one. He did it so he could bring on wingers WITHOUT sacrificing Lallana. It's not purely his fault of course, but Lallana is costing us dearly because the team gets unbalanced and he has to be accommodated. If Lallana has come off and Paterson stayed we could have effectively gone 4-2-4 and really gone for it. I'd have thought 2 big strikers were ideal for battering them long ball in the final 10 mins or so. But we'll never know will we. Someone please explain to me why we can't simply play Lallana as a central midfielder? He has a great engine on him so let's ask him to be the box to box midfielder that we need alongside Hammond. Forget playing him wide, or 'in the hole', just play him in the middle of the park for 2 or 3 games and let's see if he can start controlling games, because at the moment he's being wasted and it's to the detriment of the team.
.comsaint Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 I bet Charlton don't win by more than 1 goal. Wouldn't be surprised to see another draw either. You have to fathom in the 'Pardew' factor there though Adrian. I would imagine there will be a pretty hostile atmosphere at The Valley for Pardew next week. It's safe to say he isn't going to be their favourite returning manager! The terraces will therefore be very hostile - and this will transmit to the pitch where our delicate little flowers/jelly babies will be strutting their stuff. It won't affect the likes of Hammond, Lambert or Perry - but the rest? I'm not so sure. It's going to be a very tough game in a pretty hostile arena. Will we be up for it? Simple answer [imho]. No.
saint_stevo Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 I bet most of us, including me, are stupid enough that we wouldn't take 1 place above relegation right now. would snap ya hand off
VectisSaint Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Someone please explain to me why we can't simply play Lallana as a central midfielder? Better yet, forget playing him at all. He needs a spell in the reserves. No end product, no good having a box to box midfielder that cannot pass to a team mate. I would expect AL to be one of the causalties when we have our full team available.
hypochondriac Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Why remove a striker after 60 minutes and replace him with a midfielder if you're playing against 10 at home? Seems like a bizarre decision from my coucho potato position. Could anyone clarify? Because Patterson was f*cking terrible
corsacar saint Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Totally shambolic, were we really playing against ten men for nearly an hour. When Thomson took the ball of the head of Lambert, that just about put the lid on a wretched performance.
S-Clarke Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Woeful. we didn't have a clue, other than ''HOOF''. - by doing that we completely isolate the likes of Adam etc. Rubbish...didn't deserve to win IMO, draw was a fair result. Our lack of any agility and pace up front was frightening. Worst i've ever seen Patto play - he's not first choice for me. If that's the level of ''football'' we're going to see this year then our attendances could well drop into single figures. It was dross.

Can he not play on the right?
saint_stevo Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 2 big men up front is always gonna mean we play long ball. We suck
S-Clarke Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 2 big men up front is always gonna mean we play long ball. We suck Patto isn't even that sort of player though, he wins **** all in the air - way too lightweight. To sum this club up at the moment, a comment from a Colchester fan after the game to me... ''WTF have you done to Hammond?'' excellent, well done saints.
alpine_saint Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 To sum this club up at the moment, a comment from a Colchester fan after the game to me... ''WTF have you done to Hammond?'' excellent, well done saints. That is pretty damning....
Joesaint Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Gutted, and Patterson is not up to standard Feel that we really are getting better just need to put some power in shots and headers at goal.
saint_stevo Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Patto isn't even that sort of player though, he wins **** all in the air - way too lightweight. To sum this club up at the moment, a comment from a Colchester fan after the game to me... ''WTF have you done to Hammond?'' excellent, well done saints. Yeah but the defence/midfield look up and see 2 tall men and HOOOOOOOOF We ruin careers, true story
S-Clarke Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 One thing i will say though, i thought Mills really improved us once he came on (wouldn't have been hard tbf) but he ran at players, beat players kept wide and put a few dangerous deliveries into the box. Next game he HAS to start. No question. I'd have no qualms about sending Mellis back to Chelsea either tbf - not for this league, sooooooo lightweight it's untrue!

Crab Lungs Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 If Lee Holmes returns to the side, he will make a MASSIVE difference.

To sum this club up at the moment, a comment from a Colchester fan after the game to me... ''WTF have you done to Hammond?'' excellent, well done saints. To be fair. I thought Hammond was class today, one of a very few positives along with solid defence
70's Mike Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 back to the same old saints until today i thought we had improved in every game but today we were light weight and offered very little threat unless we got the fullbacks forward and crossed low in to the box. Defence is slowly getting sorted but we need a threat up front lets hope Papa whatever can do the business
S-Clarke Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 To be fair. I thought Hammond was class today, one of a very few positives along with solid defence I didn't think he was that bad, but i was just a bit downhearted by that comment from a Col U fan...i know he can play better than that too (saw him for brighton a few years back) I felt he was one of the players way too guilty at hoofing it too much, he's good on the deck...so bloody pass it!
saint_stevo Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 If Lee Holmes returns to the side, he will make a MASSIVE difference. Ol' glass legs? Agreed, or mills
S-Clarke Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 If Lee Holmes returns to the side, he will make a MASSIVE difference. He was going to be on the bench, but apparently picked up another injury in training (according to the talk in the ground). No idea what sort of injury though.

WATERSIDEIFASAINT Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Hope this rumour of another player arriving next week is a winger or striker as Patterson is nowhere near good enough for the 1st team squad yet. Assuming we lose at Charltom next week(although that would be typical Saints to win that one with Charlton having a 100% record and us not having won!!)then Yeovil is a total MUST WIN game to get this season moving. If we don't beat Yeovil things will start looking extremely bleak and could start the fans turning on Pardew!? I don't care how shi*e the performance is now,Win at all costs is needed as its a results business we're in.
jethro Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 I am not inspired after todays game, the B'ham game we started to play as a team until Murty went off ,today was no way as good as
Dog Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Give it time FFS, it isn't going to happen overnight.
Nexstar Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Defence was fine, central midfield did ok, couldn't seem to get a decent cross in from the wings. Desperately missed a proper striker today (no, not you Paterson). Trottman was unlucky with a header and we had a couple of tame shots on target. Should look brighter with Papa and Jaidi next week. Yes Colchester had 10 men, but that only means 1 upfront, still had 4 in midfield and at the back, the defence kept them out and Kelvin had basically nothing to do.
S-Clarke Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Give it time FFS, it isn't going to happen overnight. i know what you're saying, but our league position is getting more and more frightening. 11 off - possibly even more next weekend if we don't win at Charlton. I honestly don't believe time is on our side...results need to start now otherwise we are in serious ****.
madge Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Another terrible perfermance today. Absolutely no cohesion or leadership anywhere on the pitch and we really need an outfield captain. People have been raving about Hammond but did i miss something today or at the last few homes games i personally don't as yet he has improved our midfield. Patterson is not good enough yet..think thats about 5 missed chances in the last 2 home games. Lamberts head is dropping as he is simply getting no service whatsover. On a positive our defence looks better with trotman.
northam soul Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 So ****ing poor, when you hoof the ball so often it negates the fact you have an extra man. Why oh why did we not try to play around them more making them run out of legs. I am sorry but there can be no excuses now as this is Pardews team and Pardews tactics and with charlton next week things do not look good at the moment. We are certainly setting ourselves up for more dismay placing so much faith in a player we know nothing about anyone remember Skacel.
Saints foreva Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Today we were good imo - everywhere apart from attack where we looked clueless and the wing. Atmosphere was terrible today aswell. Very depressing day. Paterson has got to go, he is by far the worst striker I have ever seen in a Saints shirt. Had 3 great chances today but failed to convert any of them. Lambert is has yet again been marked out of the game. I thought Thompson was awful when he came on - Mills done well but seemed lightweight. Morgan looked decent when he came on aswell, some idiots boo'ed him in the Northam stand. Highlight of the day was seeing Papa's dance.
altoniansaints Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 possitive ............. clean sheet ............. jaidi to add to the sqaud ............... wiago to come ............ i didn`t spend any money to watch it Things will get better COTR
kpturner Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Poor Paterson just proved to me yet again that he ain't up to it. Comedy moment when he strayed a yard offside with the whole back line in his field of vision, then complained bitterly when the lino gave it. You know you are dreadful when you get subbed against 10 men when there are no strikers on the bench. Mills had a bit of a mare too, but deserved some reward when he got his header across the goal being begged to be tapped in. Charlton next- no chance on this performance.
saint lard Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Excuses I don't want to hear. 1) Pardew hasn't been here long, 2) We had no pre-season, 3) The club nearly went out of existence, 4) The ref done it, 5) We were unlucky, 6) We've got better players coming in. Quite simply none of the above can possibly justify zero victories in 6 fixtures in this lowly league. Now we can't even beat a side down to ten men for most of the game. Forget the ten points deduction, even without that we would be sitting proudly second to bottom of the table just ahead of Tranmere on goal difference. Unacceptable! I could not have summed it up better. I have seen no substantial progress made.
kpturner Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 ....oh, and Thompson was shocking too. Wotton was good though :-)
St Marco Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Just back and once again must say our fans who were not there must be the most opinionated of any clubs fans. You have to laugh at them. Basically the game was one of those meh games. The away team come for the draw and hoof the ball at any chance they get. There was no rytham to the game at all. Every club see's a fair share of these types of games each season. We both could of been there all night and still would not of scored. While some have returned to their "everything is ****" mentality i still remain positive. We were the better team even before the sending off which was disgusting by the way. We tried to play football in the right way. They came for the draw and just tried to stiffle the play. That obviously does not make for a good spectacle. First half we had some decent play and created some ok chances. In a way the sending off ruined the game as made them go into super defense mode. Our problem is and will remain the creating of clear cut chances. People will whine and moan like a little girl etc but the reality is this problem has been deeply rooted in this club for sometime. It is not going to change in just 4 weeks and to expect it to again is just laughable. Patterson showed his inexperience today. I don't want to be harsh to the boy as he is young and learning and people expecting him to be premiership quality in like the 5 games he has played in his life are obviously mental. He will hopefully learn from the game especially in terms of his runs of which he was offside too many. The other interesting thing is that Pardew changed things mid way through the 2nd half after it had become very stale. A lot of people who moan talk about putting Mill's in etc and i think Pardew made the right decisions tacticly. The game improved after the changes in terms of us creating something. Although i felt Mills was very poor. All in all we have still yet to lose at home. We have yet to win either. But if you look at the history books your see last time we went three games without losing at home was from 28th feb to 14th march. A longtime ago. The reality is we have four players to come into this team (Saga,Jaidi,Papa,Holmes) and those 4 will add that creativty of which we are lacking. So while it is of course so easy to go over the top and ***** and moan about every little thing the facts are we are improving as a team but more importantly as a club. It is frustrating as we live in the era of expecting instant success. But i think really all we are seeing are those who expected promotion this year finally realising what everyone else already knew in that this was always going to be a hard season and regardless of who was in charge was going to have a hard job to do. A job of re-building a club up from the bottom up. So naturally those who have just realised that are going to be unhappy. It was a poor game and in truth we should have won. But sometimes football is like that.
Weston Saint Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 I saw enough today to suggest we will soon start winning games. Defence looked sound, central midfield needs to create more and get forward to support the forwards. Lallana had a good game out wide and showed he can play there effectively. Mills looked good when he came on. Paterson lacks confidence and needs to avoid getting caught offside. He is just not ready yet. We had enough of the game but just could not break down their defence. Very frustrating but not as bad as many early comments on here from those who did not attend (not having a go at their absence just that they cannot get perspective from verbal or written commentary)
bpsaint Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Well, what a waste of time and money that was. As soon as they were down to 10 men you knew we wouldn't win. Would like to see us try a 4-3-3 system, probably Perry Thomas Trotman Harding Spiderman Lallana Mills Papa Lambert Saga Lallana works best as an attacking midfielder, and Lambert needs someone to knock balls down to him espically as Pardew insists on us playing a long ball game,as its fair to say he won't create his own chances.
kpturner Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Second comedy moment: Thomas striding forward and deciding he had suddenly become a quality finisher, so he had a shot from 40 yards which my 5 year old would have saved. I say "comedy" but I wasn't laughing - nor was I laughing when Harding passed the ball straight off the pitch with no saints player within 30 yards. Woeful.
WATERSIDEIFASAINT Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 After reading all the comments from Charlton fans over the last few weeks on Pardew I am starting to get worried.I just have this nagging doubt but hope Pardew does work out as the last thing we need is to have to change managers again. That definately could put us at risk of dropping into Div 2. At least we will be able to bring in Papa and Saga and hopefully Mills will start in the next match. Charlton really really hate Pardew and are playing well.Pardew really needs to get this team hugely pumped up for this game or we could get hammered which really wouldn't do us any good in our current predicament. As we then need to win our next 3 matches aginst Yeovil,Carlisle & Bristol Rovers. The team will have had enough time to gel by then so there should be totally no excuses for those 3 games. If we can't win them we are in big big trouble imo Lets hope there are still 2 loans on the way so Patterson and Thompson can be sent out on loan and not be in our squad as neither of them are currently good enough for div 1. Charlton fans think they are going to beat us 4-0.It would be marvellous if we could shove it right down their throats. On paper we should be able to compete with anyone in this league so next week will be fascinating to see where this team really are.Other than Murty he should have his 1st choice team to chose from.
geoffnut Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 I don't think we would win against 8, 9 or 10 men. No wins all season will create yet another depressing record.
.comsaint Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Well, what a waste of time and money that was. As soon as they were down to 10 men you knew we wouldn't win. No offence BP but that midfield would be truly shocking! Far, far too lightweight. And what's Hammond done to be absent?
Nexstar Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Good players: Trotman, Lambert, Mills, Hammond Bad Players: Paterson, Mellis
Genk Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Paterson is awful! Honestly cannot see what Pardew see's in him.
S-Clarke Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 After reading all the comments from Charlton fans over the last few weeks on Pardew I am starting to get worried.I just have this nagging doubt but hope Pardew does work out as the last thing we need is to have to change managers again. That definately could put us at risk of dropping into Div 2. Pards time at Charlton was completely different - he was pretty much strangled in what he could do, everyone was being ''laid'' off around him as they were cost cutting and his best players being sold (A. Reid). He's shown enough for me at West Ham to convince me he's good enough for us. It just isn't working at the moment though, but once we get a fully fit/available side out there it should... but we can't keep going through weeks just saying ''don't worry, we're close to a win'' though - before you know it, we could be 15/16 points adrift.
badgerx16 Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 I saw enough today to suggest we will soon start winning games. How soon is soon ? This seems to have been a standard statement for the last three games. I am not doubting the opinions and observations of those lucky enough to get to SMS every week, but by next weekend we could be 12 points off safety. Would that then make Yeovil a 'must win' game ?
Baj Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Anyone fancy a whip around to pay patterson not to turn up any more...
bpsaint Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 No offence BP but that midfield would be truly shocking! Far, far too lightweight. And what's Hammond done to be absent? My bad, forgot about Hammond. I'd push Lallana out to Mills' position, and bring Hammond in.
scotty Posted 5 September, 2009 Posted 5 September, 2009 Glasgow Saint; "If we dont win today I will need to change my avatar" Im waiting with bated breath;)
