But had he done a better job withthe resources he had we would of had even more money AND those players worth 20m!!!
You've lost me a little there.Do you mean if he had got us promoted? if he had we would have had Paul Allen as well of course and Ronaldo etc.It didnt happen and we are where we are now.He did what he said he would, but failed the fans expectations.

I think you will find that you are supposed to go out and win whatever league you are in.Obviously I know you know we all know that is not possible.Gb stated he would get us to the playoffs, not to win the league. You oviously thought we would win the league.Overrating our squad and underrating the opposition.

I like to see fans being positive about our chances as i always downplay it myself. I do hope you give AP more time than you are stating by the way.

I did not care if we won the league nick...I could not have given a crap..I dont care if we dont win league 1 next season...PROMOTION is what it is about..that is why pardew is here..that was why burley was here...he failed and you (with very few) cant see it..

IF pardew FAILS to get us up NEXT season then he will probably walk himself...

Exactly...that is my whole point...nothing to do with expectations just based purely on what we had available and how Burleys pathetic team selections and tactics cost us automatic promotion.

That has nothing to do with fans...its to do with Burley's half arsed approach to the job and abysmal management here.

maybe the lack of pace was down to burley not bringing in the right players..?

Pace? We were the second highest scorers of the league second only to WBA and we had four players who reached double figures in goals so we must of been doing something right.

Nothing wrong with the team going forward that season and with the amount of goals we scored we should have made automatic promotion, let alone the play-offs. Burley's failing was not sorting out the defence, which for an international defender himself, was criminal.

so... £20m worth of talent, then the £7-12m he spent...and could not get us up..

oh dear

Roy Keane has spent £8m on a team that are currently in a relegation position.

Perhaps it wasn't Burley who couldn't get us up, perhaps it was the players?

Burley bought, or made (Baird) that team. It was his team probably more than any other manager of Saints since Ian Branfoot (even Strachan was still working with a Dave Jones spine*) .

They didn't land on his lap. Burley's team.

*maybe I should have said since Dave Jones.

That is true but as soon as it was running and winning games it was taken apart in pre season.

You are like a dog with a bone, do you know that ?

Is Burley or the SFA paying you ?

As an aside, it seems he's managed to slime his way into keeping the Scottish job - for now.

Well as a Scotland supporter I am perfectly happy he is staying, he/the SFA dealt correctly with the Rangers players drinking incident, and considering the players he has at his disposal, we are playing as well as can be expected. The problem lies mainly in lack of youth development at Scottish club teams, relying on gash foreign imports. Funnily enough this is a situation that England may find themselves in in a few years with the over reliance on foreign imports in club teams.

Burley may not have lived up to expectations while our manager, but hardly worth banging on about the fact that he may have got sacked from the national job.

Posted

You could have given Burley £50m to spend and he still would have set out for a play off place.

Some would have still been happy with that, because he did as he said he would.

Others will say if you are targeting a play off place, then you are expecting to gain promotion, otherwise why say it ?

I bet he told Crouchy and Wilde that he would be targeting promotion.

What a pathetic post.Gb has slimed his way in keeping his job.Well surely they would have picked up on his drinking habits as he fell out of all the clubs up there. They , a professional football body who know less than Alpine decide to keep the manger when they could have easily got rid. Because it is not how you want it , he has slimed his way to keep the job. What a sad person you are at times

i liked your 50m bit, a good lol.Boyd threw his toys out of the pram, he may have thought he had a god given right to play but he had to wait his chance. Is he still scoring lots of goals up there?

Of course they are, they need to have a southerner defend their manager from people who are solid bone from the neck up.

Exactly like Boyd yes, players who think they can withdraw/retire from international call ups dependent on who is in charge, should never get the honour of playing for their country again.

At the time he was dropped by Burley he was scoring for fun for Rangers.

Almost as bad as the Venables/Hoddle, I wont pick Le Tiss for England episode.

But Burley knows best, doesn't he Mr Rasiak.

so has his goals dried up now then? I really dont know I promise. If they have surely he could be in the same bracket as saga.He scored 11 in 10 then got his contract and lost his touch to a degree. I would suspect that most football fans on here if given the privilage to play for their country would not refuse however long it takes to get picked.

Can you imagine what a bad influence he must have been in the dressing room?

As I have said numeous times GB walked out on us like many others, hoping to get a better job he is no better than any of them

Every striker has a bad patch nick, but when they are on fire you put them in the team. Boyd had a good scoring record for Scotland also, but Burley decided to pee him off by dropping him. What Boyd did after that was a disgrace but he was dropped mysteriously in much the same way Rasiak was.

I get your point and do understand, but it is a team game and you have to be patient. To me Boyds attitude shows to me why perhaps he was not in the team in the first place.I have always been a team player and whilst of course I was the star and must play i always considered my teammates first.Team spirit often is more important than having individual talent.A mixture is vest of course.

Goodluck to him. I think in a way it is a good move because now he has 4 years to prepare. If after that time they still have not done anythin after having him for almost 7 years then all excuses are laughable.

Atually, what he has is two yerars to prepare for and achieve qualification for Euro 2012; if that fails he'll likely be out ... pretty certainly in fact. But it still won't necessarily be his fault. Any Scoland manager is going to struggle to get results with the current dearth of talent. Scotland is a small country; it has no reason to expect to get to major championships ahead of countries like Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, and so on : the list of small European countries with footballing traditions is a long one. Even more than having a good manager, it's about having four or five very good players who can carry the team, and Scotland just don't have that now. Compare Ireland, which in the likes of Given, Dunne, Keane, and two or three others (especially if they can get Stephen Ireland back in the fold) does have the talent to do well and -- surprise, surprise -- is pretty certain to qualify for SA. Football is a team game, and if your team doesn't have talented players, it's never likely to go far no matter who is managing/coaching it.

The first thing he should do in my book is speak to those who he fell out with and clear the air. It is like Cappello having a fall out with Rooney. We would be a better team with him then without him. Burley needs to sort that side of him out.

They don't play another competative game for a year now. Plenty of time to look at players who will have potential to be apart of that team etc.. It will be a hard job to do but he has the time to do it. I hope he does it because i would rather be seeing a tournement with all the home nations in it. It makes for better atmospheres.

The season after he needed to deliver promotion (or at least a genuine promotional challenge), you mean.

Selling players happens to all clubs post-parachute payments and was always going to happen to us. That's why he wasn't there to "build" for some maybe-promotion in years to come. He had one season, he blew it.

The fact that we had to sell players is more evidence of why Burley blew it, not some lame-ass excuse for why Burley had it tough and was a roaring success after all. Southampton FC had to sell because Burley failed.

Amazing how few people grasp this. Wilde, Hone and co put the money on red, whilst Burley caused black to come up.

Looking back, it is CRIMINAL that he was allowed to set the lottery of the playoffs as his target, considering the money he had to spend. And then he gives the first peno to Leon Best......

I thought you would have understood my wording,I accept it was not explained correctly.

If you recall after the cup final and we sold Bridgey (the start of our decline IMO) WGS moaned that it is impossible to get to the top clubs because as you start to near them they just come and buy your best players. That is when the penny dropped for him that he had gone as far as he could. The same happened in the summer after the play offs.We had then some players who were the nucleus for us to make the top again but they were sold.

Very few managers can put a side together in 6 months and turn them into a promotion team.Keane did it at Sunderland, he hasnt had the same luck at present at Ipswich.

If we had not had the boardroom politics and the club had felt good about itself then perhaps we would have cracked it, his signings were OK but we ultimately failed in that season, the god given right for us to be in the top flight had not worked.

The fans now are probably in the best mindset now for our climb. The majority I believe accept that we have to worjk to get back to the top and most are patient and can see the building blocks being ut into place.

It does worry me seeing some on here thinking we should be beating all comers, they are misguided and if thety expect anything better than safety them they are only going to be disappointed.

Well i can look back and say i did warn about spinning the roulette wheel at the time, and questioned how we could afford it. sadly the fools in charge went headlong into the abyss. We certainly had our club back.

George Burley is clearly a befuddled alcoholic - you can see it in him.

Towards the end of his time with us it really affected his ability to mange in my opinion and if he'd been allowed to continue with us we would have been relegated.

Scotland should sack him because he's not capable of doing the job there, just like he wasn't capable of managing us.

That said i appreciate he was a very good manager before his drinking got out of control.

The reason we had to sell was because the Wilde bunch came in running and threw the kitchen sink at everything without thinking about the consequences if we didn't get promoted. Once that sank in we had to sell to survive, the rest is history.
