Heres a few facts for you and alpine, when the Wilde bunch took over Burley was given £7million to spend which was a huge amount for a championship club but the Wilde bunch excepted his expectation of a play off place which we achieved. If you want to slag Burley of for not achieving more, perhaps you should aim your anger at the management at the time as Burley achieved what he set out to do. The following season we sold £20million worth of talent, how do yo replace that? We were also nearer to a playoff place than relegation when he left, Pearson was a whisker from relegation, remember alpine some of us were there through thick and thin and not behind a keyboard.

Wilde and co talked about "promotion". PROMOTION.

It was Burley who watered it down to "play offs" and it was Burley that s-c-r-aped into the Play-offs on the last day thanks to other teams.

And at the end of that season everyone said how we were going to build on this etc etc etc. We did worse the following season. Much worse. Which was obvious to anyone with a brain before a ball was kicked.

Including Burley who could see a cushy season of excuses on the horizon where nothing could ever be his fault again because he could bleat about losing "talent". But didn't he have the talent the previous season? And failed anyway?

That made promotion in the previous season absolutely essential (ie a concerted effort to get promoted, not a box-ticking "i got to the playoffs" exersise, a "will this do?" routine which is what Georgie served up).

That's why he failed. He did fail.

so... £20m worth of talent, then the £7-12m he spent...and could not get us up..

oh dear

DD GB turned 3 players into 20m worth of talent. How much would Spurs or Fulham get for the 10m worth we sold them now?

With a Midas touch like that it's no wonder he turned an average Scots team into one that's going to the World Cup finals.

Burley had trouble sorting out his defence just as Redknapp could sort out the goalscoring problem when we first went down. Why is the same level of grief not directed at him? Aferall, he said would go up f'sure?

Yes, Burley the ex-Scotland defender who played in a World Cup for his country had 'trouble sorting out the defence'.

That's sums it all up in a sentence.

Haven't seen anyone backing his decision to drop Rasiak though half-way through a purple patch...had he played him we may well have been promoted and George could have gained Saint-like status.

Decisions change lives and careers don't they? ;-)

To be fair if you dont have the players it is hard to sort out anything. To be a good manager you have to be lucky, he hasnt been that and so he cant be called a good manager. He did ok here.

Yeah, because this forum really is the Harry Redknapp appreciation society

We all knew Arry didn't want to be here, which is why the vast, vast majority of fans were excited and energised by the appointment of Burley. Me included, I thought then, and I think now it was the best appointment we could have made at the time. A brilliant appointment.

Except it turns out he wanted to be here as much as Redknapp did and he failed to deliver given the most beneficial circumstances any manager could ever dream of. All on a plate for him and he blew it.

He didn't drop Rasiak halfway through a purple patch. Ras had gone a few games without scoring. Saga came in played and (alongside either Jones or Best) showed the form that had most on here demanding we sign him permanently.

CB I dont agree with that. When we were relegated the team lost a lot of players.Palace and Norwich did not, we then had to rebuild a team to make a push for promotion. All happening at the time of rela boardroom unrest and politics. The club was divided, I think it was impossibl to manage a club in that position,I doubt there would have benn anyone who could. I hope we all have learnt from that expereince and this board and the club is now a much happier place with our new position.

I'm sure that someone more 'statistically aware' than me will correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Rasiak score 15 or more goals BEFORE XMAS? Then he was inexplicably dropped for pretty much the rest of the season?

The subject was covered pretty much in depth...if I remember rightly it was assumed that Messrs Rasiak and Skacel had a 'falling out' with Mr Burley over an 'issue'.

So if that was the case Ras got dropped not based on what he was producing, as you would expect, but because he opened his mouth - fine management.

BTW, I think that season, had Ras continued his form, that we wouldn't have needed the Derby Play off games - we would have got automatic promotion.

I thought that Saga arrived the season after?

History now though..

All that is true Nick, but we can't get away from the fact he spent £7M + on players and did next on nothing with them.

Even though we're bottom - Pards has only spent around £1.5M - and we look more of a unit now than we did then.

i hope that the experience of our impatience will put us in good stead for the upward but slow climb back to success. To me in the main Gb made some very good buys and made us more than we spent

Sorry, this is garbage. End of the Burley half-season saw Lowe gone and the biggest feel-good factor at the club in a decade. Like it or not the Wilde regime came in on a crest of a wave and spent a fortune. It was a positive not a negative atmosphere to work in that season. You're just rewriting history.

There was some bickering that season but not that much. That was the season after.

It's all history but with the bountiful resources of time* and money available there were managers we could have had that could have promoted us easily.

Burley had six months of zero pressure and then £8m and a full pre season to "rebuild". How long do you want?

*anyone that had grizzled about lack of pre season this time has to concede that Burley had all the time in the world, and then some. Too many like to moan about what they haven't got and conveniently ignore what they have got.

It may be garbage to you IYHO CB but not as i see it.We were far from united and whilst many were delighted and behind the Wilde bunch it was not all settled.Yes he did spend money but it does take time for a lot of new faces to gel.At no time did GB or the club say we would get auto promotion and realistically made the play offs our target. That was achieved, I never thought we were good enough to make the auto promotion places, did you? Pointing to the money spent is misleading IMO, we had to replace the quality sold or released and to do so you have to spend money.

The following season Gb had pointed to mid table after losing the top players, again realistic not head in the clouds that we will walk this league etc..

Absolutely right !

The stars of that 2006/2007 season were already at the club before he arrived - Jones, Bale, Baird !

I might add that Georgie boy's spending spree in the summer of 2006 delivered the square root of bugger all in terms of return. He bought badly !!

He was unsupervised by the idiot Wilde, so he had carte-blanche to spend more cash than any of our rivals that season ( other than perhaps Brum) and still managed to neglect our defence which was our achilles heel throughout the season. He also failed to bring in a leadership type player that might have made us more mentally tough on the field so we did'nt ship so many late points.

He was as inspiring as Clement Freud and really gave no indication he was happy to manage our club.

Quite why so many give him the benefit of the doubt is beyond me..

I dont agree he bought badly, there were some very good buys some average ones and some poor ones.Tell me a manager who has only bought well? I cant recall who we bought to be fair, Davis Rasiak the Columbian, Pele. There must be more.

As for Bale baird and Jones.Only jones was on the fringe when GB came and Bale was played at a young age, as for baird he had been cast aside and going nowhere. You must admit he trned him from a free transfer to a multi million pound transfer.

Purple patch? Rasiak went four games without scoring a goal so he brought in Saganowski who scored in his second and third games, he went on to score 10 goals in 11 games. Would of Rasiak scored three against Wolves at Molineux, as you say decisions.

So they played to the standard that made them worth £20m in the preceding season, correct?

You can't have it both ways - either we were crippled by the loss of £20m worth of talent or we didn't have the talent in the first place.

Not under George Burley, no. Multi million pounds of transfer funds and "£20m" of talent already at the club I would expect another manager to deliver, at very least a solid challenge to the top four, with a top two finish being on the cards all season. Solid, solid, solid play offs, top two contention.

Not bimbling around ninth with fingers crossed lets scrape sixth on the last day. Not for the millions and millions and millions he spent.

The season when these players made a name to be sold was in the play off season. The season started with them being fringe players. With his nous he turned them into saleable assets.I never rated Baird and still don't. Bale is a classic case of leaving a club too soon for the bright lights and Kenwynne has done well, and still will improve more.So they weren't worth 20m and still not but we made them look better than they were.At the start of tha season they were not must plays at the end they were so.Thier departure was massive to the clubs players and fans moral, i find it impossible for fans not to see that.

GB added players to the squad and in the main were a success. He delivered what he said he would, it is not his fault the fans expected more than was possible.

Question: who did GB buy who is now a lynchpin of our team?

By contrast did you know that Pardew bought Racon and Sam for Charlton - widely credited by Charlton fans as being behind their current success (both unavailable to Pards through injury while at Charlton).

Kelvin has been a star, hardly a lynchpin though. Many would say Rasiak and saga (not me)

Sorry Nick your re-writing history hear to suit your anti-Wilde agenda as we all know you questioned him from the start - rightly as it seemed. Burley is a different kettle of fish all together.

How can you forget Watford at home with no less than 6 players playing on the wrong side in one game? 2-0 down with 20 minutes to go and makes a substitution in injury time when we had 3 subs available?

0-0 at home to S****horpe? and bringing Saga on in injury time!

A whole pre-season ignoring the central defence apart from bringing a trialist to Eastleigh that ended up at Bristol City because we rejected him.

I jumped for joy when we got Burley and cannot forgive him for his lack of effort here and pathetic team selections.

What manager lets your most inexeprienced forward take the first penalty when he has scored an own goal in the game and his confidence is low and pressure so intense?

We had a squad here that should of gone up automatically and IMO only Burleys weird tactics and substitutions caused us to scrape in the playoffs mainly due to Preston hitting the self destruct button as well.

indeed

we got to 6th (thanks to other teams letting it go in the end) DESPITE burley...we never got their with his brilliant managemant or tactics..just that we had better players than most in the league..

before anyone says it..that 6-0 at wolves was a one off..clearly..they created chances and we happened to score ours...a one off...much like our 6-3 win over man u etc

No doubt we all re write history to suit our agendas, but also we all se things through different eyes. Some of what you say is clearly correct. The defender you mention ,has he gone on to do well?

I do know that our medical teams had got it wrong about Killers return and that clouded our judgement.May i also say that Bennett played a game and was slaughtered by fans who said hewas the worst player ever to wear our shirt but he proved us wrong and I suspect many would take him back without a second thought.

Myself i dont get the played out of position stuff, they are footballers who have preferred positions but surely should be able to adapt. Many forget that WGS was prone to do the same ie Fernandes. We had too many who could play in lots of positions (some of this down to GB's signings and others before) but not be outstanding in 1 set area.

As for the play off semi final, there were lots of 'if only's' The way the ref allowed our star forward to be kicked out of the game and so was missing in the 2nd leg was appalling.Best would not have been on the pitch if not for that. He is so self confident that he would ask to take the penalty and if you have that it is foolish to turn it down. I have been a great fan of Kelvin but on that day he did nothing to increase the pressure on the penalty takers and was surprised he didnt try a bit of gamesmanship, i know they did. saga missed a few golden chances in the first leg and in the 2nd we went down in glorious defeat.

I cant recall the league games you mention and so go with it, I assume that the Watford game it was bad management, was it the one where we wre dominating until they got a scrambled goal in first half stoppage time? The Scunnygame is a fog to me. It does seem odd but he may have rated Saga at that stage as much as i do, very rarely does he come up with the goods.

It is something i worry about in the current team.

maybe the lack of pace was down to burley not bringing in the right players..?

NickH those were just some examples that stuck in my memory as really bad management - the defender did play a few games and did OK but not set the world alight admittedly but we didnt either with no cover and that wa the point!

Bennet should not of been in that position had Burley done his job and recruited - how can you rely on Killer coming back with the history he had.

All water under the bridge now but I hold Burley in just as much disain as I do for Redknapp .....Calum Davenport v Carlton Cole!!!

IMO it is time to consign Burley to the history books.

Possibly.

It is however, interesting to see that similar problems have come up in the job he moved onto. Maybe certain "oracles" on here shouldnt have rushed to blame our fans for running out of tolerance with him...

Well I suspect every manager is brought in to win the league but being realistic only 1 can do so. I wonder where the season after next came from.I do recall the fans saying we must be patient and give him 3-5 years. That of course didnt last long.

He definately failed to do so, that season ended and the team was stripped of its best players to try and plug some of the holes in our finances, due to the new board spinning the roulette wheel and getting it wrong.

As for AP only havung this season just shows how things have changed.LM our mist successful manager had us relegated first season and it was 2 years later before he got success.

what is the obsession with the past on here? I was excited about GB when he joined and supported him to the end but will admit that things fell well short of expectations and that it was best for all concerned that we parted company.

I think you will find that you are supposed to go out and win whatever league you are in.Obviously I know you know we all know that is not possible.Gb stated he would get us to the playoffs, not to win the league. You oviously thought we would win the league.Overrating our squad and underrating the opposition.

I like to see fans being positive about our chances as i always downplay it myself. I do hope you give AP more time than you are stating by the way.
