benjii Posted 4 September, 2009 Share Posted 4 September, 2009 true - but seems in past whenever we hear rumours of clubs interested or players wanting away, they have gone. We turned down bids for Lallana, Dyer (and possibly Surman) in January. Ironically that is probably why we had -10 this season.
shurlock Posted 4 September, 2009 Share Posted 4 September, 2009 Looked a bit of a scrappy finish, but then you realise who he just scored against! Gianluigi Buffon! Did he really need to take three touches:D

And we've turned down bids for plenty of players in the past as well Beattie, Pahars and Lundevam being pretty high profile examples but there have been others. Believe you me, a Leibherr owned CCC level Saints would not have stopped Kenwynne Jones leaving. The way some people think you'd think Saints kicked him out the door screaming and bawling his way up the A1 with a saints scarf round his neck. scotty Posted 4 September, 2009 Share Posted 4 September, 2009 What's this got to do with Lowe ffs? Did we never buy players under Lowe as well as sell? You need to get a life SaintRichmond as you are seriously obsessed, move on like we have. +1. Lowes old news. In fact, he's a c*nt and old news.

Professor Posted 4 September, 2009 Share Posted 4 September, 2009 If the bids for MS/MS were close to the window closing, it would have been too much of a weakening of the squad with no time to replace. If they still want to go, and offers come in Jan, they might still be off, but the difference in the club now, is that no player is irreplaceable. As things stand, most people would say they are both well worth their place in the squad, but they also give some stability at a time of change, since they are two of the few regulars from last season. This is shown by Murty, Trottman, Jadi, Harding, Hammond, Mellis, Lambert & Waggio Thats only 3 players short of a team, at this rate the old squad that got relegated are going to seriously struggle to get in the side, from the improvements to the squad. Saint Fen Posted 4 September, 2009 Share Posted 4 September, 2009 +1 i remember our half arsed attempts at rejecting Kenwyne's bids, only to accept an offer ''as it was too good to turn down'' a week or so later. Yeah and the fact Kenwyne went on strike!

CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 4 September, 2009 Share Posted 4 September, 2009 Well yeah, but only because he's since proven capable of better at a higher level - at the time he was a good CCC striker who had just started to show his potential - I was always a big fan of his ("KEN~!!!!") and thought he could get a regular game at a BorInG 4 club at some point, but we did well from that deal based on what he'd actually achieved at the time. With young players what they've achieved has very little to do with it - what had Walcott or Bale won before we transferred them for big money ? The real question is 'what could they achieve' ? - with Kenwyne the likelihood that he could play successfully in the EPL seemed pretty obvious to some on here (but one doesn't like to brag obviously) and I shall continue to maintain Sunderland got him on the cheap . Ain't player power a bit*h . The problem with KJ is that he's not a true natural striker , for all his pace , formidable strength and outstanding aerial ability I doubt he'll get the 20+ goals a season he should really based on his potential . Just a bit of fun and purely a hypothetical scenario but if Kenwyne were English I think he could fulfill exactly the same kind of role England currently employ Emile Heskey for - except Jones could probably do it better . captainchris Posted 4 September, 2009 Share Posted 4 September, 2009 And he had also refused to play for us if he didn't leave... If someone said to you here's £6m in return for your relegation is that too good to turn down ?
JibMcdo Posted 4 September, 2009 Share Posted 4 September, 2009 If someone said to you here's £6m in return for your relegation is that too good to turn down ? Obviously not, what a silly question. And also I think selling Kenwyne Jones had nothing to do with getting relegated in the end. That was the return of Rupert and his Dutch friends. Let me put one to you. If you have a player in your team who refuses to play for you and you are offered £6m plus Stern John, who is going to score 20 goals and keep you up that season, would you accept? I think I know the answer.

If you are weak in your reaction to transfer requests you will encourage the perpatrator to persist in his selfish wishes - he smelt blood in other words and RL as we all know was a selling chairman. Eventually this strategy took us down. Our current managment/owners appear far more resiliant ,unless it suites them to sell which it did with Rasiak by the looks of it. By the way, because you disagree with my opinion I would not throw cheap jibes at you by saying your arguments are 'silly'. Keep to the argument and resist the tempataion to condemn people for their opinion.

This misses the point: the fact is that it has been shown that £6m for Kenwyne Jones was a bargain for Sunderland. What would it cost to replace him? You can argue that they took a risk at £6M + Stern, but they were proved right. Bargain, real bargain.

In retrospect. £6m for Jones on the day we did the deal was a fantastic bit of business for Saints. It is immaterial whether he scores 500 goals for Sunderland including a hat-trick in the FA Cup Final for them and they tear down Bob Stokoe and put a twelve foot Kenwynne up in its place. On the day it was excellent business for us. Not least because the mardy t*at was on strike.

paulwantsapint Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 In all fairness Lowe would have done a better deal in selling Jones he would have pushed hard for £6m+, Stern & sell on clause when Lowe sold the best players he would get the best price Was just a shame that he didn't stick to what he was good at selling for a profit & financing football stadiums On MS & MS if they want to sit & sulk in reserves that is fine by me because we only need to sell on Saints terms for proper fees What is Saga worth circa 1M ? Spiderman Circa 2.5M + sell on clause ?

sadoldgit Posted 5 September, 2009 Share Posted 5 September, 2009 Quite refreshing that we can actually turn bids down now, ( for whatever reason ) ... don't you think ???? ...... In the past, Lowe would have been rushing round to the Buying Club with a tin to put the cash in ......... Yep, because it was not as if we were desperate for the money was it? I seem to remember those who followed him doing the same thing with Baird, Bale and Jones.
