MLT betting on saints game

So, my hunch last week that Matt (or his publishers) "embellished" the story to get publicity for the book wasn't wide of the mark then?

Or he didn't check his facts very diligently, who knows but to the complacent / lazy tag do we add cynical and if it was just a way of beefing up the content of the book why do so by admitting an attempted fraud. Is this an auto-biograghy or a work of fiction based on real events like the Damned United.

Hopefully it will remove the need for Police to probe any further but begs the question why run the risk of ruining your his major asset his public persona / character by inventing or pretending to be involved in betting scams. Doesn't make sense especially as the books are not exactly flying off the shelves. Nonetheless Trousers a good call but I still would like to know why he made it up beyond the obvious answer - sales. Things don't stack up Mr Conspiracy Theory and we both know it.

Considering the dinlo's multiple identities, then I reckon he could claim both.

Um Pahars, unlikely to be appearing on Mock the Week anytime soon.

You're about as funny as undesirable middle-aged men who holiday on a regular basis in Thailand.

Chill out Steve only another 48 weeks until your next experience.

In the meantime if you continue to cast asperions on me just because you don't agree with my opinions then expect a little back. Time to play with the big boys.

It's for gems like these that I can forgive people for by-passing the ignore function:D

I can be whoever you want me to be isn't that the attraction?

No that certainly isn't the attraction. I went to see Quadrophienia on friday night ................... you should go and see it.

I recommend watching the film, before the play, but very entertaining.

How does a non story get to 9 pages?

With some gratuitous 19C baiting laced with a large dose of libellous comments because some people are unable to build their own defence.

Is it a non-story though Trousers? Its just a saga with a new plot - why did professional football player make up stories in his book about a betting scam he was involved in? Was his life that boring that he needed to spice it up with lies?

Are you expecting anytime soon for MLT to come out and say my publisher told me to do it or Graham Hiley made a load of stuff up because he got bored? Aaah, poor Matty and did you read it before signing it off or was that to much like 'hard work'? (To coin a quote of his )

It's a 'Tale of the Unexpected' if nothing else.

Disappointed MLT feels it is not necessary to explain himself to his adoring public just as he felt it was not necessary to give us an explanation into his decisions with regard to Pinnacle and why he supported the bid to the last minute and to the detriment of the start of the Swiss initiated rebuild . His responses so far could have been written by you and me based on our own limited knowledge and MLT has expressed his displeasure at Lowe for not owning up to his role in the demise of SFC, a view I agree with but one that works both ways and so MLT has still to explain his actions fully IMO and this is just another unanswered question about a strange confession.

I'm not so sure about that first bit...

He may be off the hook legally and with the FA as it is now said that the game wasn't covered/available for such actions.....

But if it could not have happened, then why oh why did he put it into the book?

That may have far more ramifications for him in the future than the fact he may have bent a football rule, instead of making a few extra quid (who if they could wouldn't try and beat a system?) suddenly he needs to explain a "tall tale".

Personally I don't give a damn about it, and it doesn't affect his standing as a legend for us in any way, but in oh so PC Corporate Britain these days, he may well have dealt himself a bad long term blow to his wallet in terms of future employment/income opportunities which IS stupid.

Like I said before - Matt you TWERP

Invitation is just an dysphemism, you act as though you have a vast arsenal of verbal weapons awaiting anyone who dares to 'take you on', but its plain for all to see you are just a very average billy no-mates bully wannabe.

Doesn't make any difference to me - can't wait to get the book (put off buying it myself as I have a birthday soon!) and the man will always be a hero to me. As a lad he always made watching the Saints worthwhile. You never knew when he'd do something the other 21 players just couldn't and even if we lost I went away talking about THAT pass, THAT shot.

I re-watched my "Taking Le Tiss" DVD last night and I recommend anyone who has anything less than total respect for him as a Saints legend do the same.

Any news if the police are taking the matter further? They were planning on meet the FA and then we had the news that the game wasn't live and so the betting scam with the spread firms could not have occured. So where are we now?

Are the police pursuing the issue?

Did MLT just quote the wrong game by mistake?

Did he deliberately invent the story to beef up book sales?

Did he make up anymore stories and if so does the book need to be reclassified in the fiction section?

Has MLT given a satisfactory explanation to the affair who do we expect some well rehearsed 'straight bat' response as per the answers he has given so far with regard to Pinnacle.

Finally, do we know the validity of those 40 pages of well-wisher emails and can we name any other books about the greatest stars living or dead who included 40 pages of ego massage from the general public under the premise of wanting 'to give them a voice'?

All in all a bizarre few months for MLT and to top it all his book has fallen out of the top 20 of the book sellers hot bed of sales - the hard back non fiction chart as at 12/09/09. Suffice to say it does not figure anywhere in the overall bestsellers charts. Another serious lack of misjudgement to boost sales of a dull book or a simple error lying about helping to execute a betting scam? In any event I am surprised it's gone quiet and trust that MLT isn't planning on laying low until it all goes away - he owes Saints fans more than that.

So please let share if you have any recent news or if you agree or disagree that MLT owes us an explanation if his book ia a work of fiction or non-fiction.

Just read his "explanation" re Pinnacle.

Not sure he was telling us everything.

He's either in denial or chosing to wallpaper over cracks.

His explantion to questions on Pinnacle in his recent radio interviews could have benn written by anyone of us and he was fortunate not to face a more inquisitive and knowledgeable interviewer as his answers were a statement of events we already knew but no explanation as to why decisions were made and the bid allowed to run well past its respectability date. Perhaps, the most telling response from MLT was in the Mayo interview when he gave a very audible sigh at the mention of Pinnacle and Mayo had to check it was ok to discuss - not that they did as Mayo simply accepted his paper thin response.

The betting scam is another can of worms altogether and based on recent twists, is this book a work of fact or fiction and is MLT's strategy to lay low until the dust settles? If so, not good enough and we deserve an explanation minus the paste and scissors this time.

Who gives a flying f*ck about matty failing to whack a ball out of play. Now if we were talking about roy keanes admission of assault in his crappy book, "Oi went in haard, oi tink de baall was dere somewhair" we'd be in business.

Allegedly his current employers may have an issue with it assuming he is not ill or is allowed to take two Saturdays off during the season. Of course if MLT or his representatives made an official and detailed statement explaining his actions then all the speculation could be buried. Perhaps he is still happy to carry on taking le tiss out of all of us. His silence IMO is deafening.

hmmmm dont like that hes not on SSN..worrying. :(

Who for? MLT has to reap what he sow's just like the rest of us. IMO what ever the outcome he stretched his 'easy going and hugely popular personality' to a point that things become less easy to forgive and forget. In short he thought he was above the normal rules without a thought to what people may actually think. Poor poor judgement but that is just my opinion but some frank answers and an apology would be a start.

Im not ganna have a go at you like everyone else NC but you really are going over the top on your MLT betting reaction, imo. I'd have done the same in his posistion, the 90's were a different time (this is OBVIOUS if you read his book).

Jonny but hasn't it been proven that the game in question was not televised live and so the spread firms would not have offered that bet as they only did it at the time on live televised games.

So why lie about a betting scam? To ramp up sales? Failed IMO. To make the book more 'interesting'? Failed IMO. To play up the whole Taking Le Tiss' angle? Probably achieved but not as intended IMO.

I'm as over the top as MLT has gone to ground about the whole affair and I think a frank explanation and apology in either event truth or lie is required. An auto-biography is not supposed to be a work of fiction whereas events can be embellished with the mists of time this you must admit is some embellishment if not true as alleged by the fact the game was not live on TV.
