Professor Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 On a crucial day such as today, the absence of news, except the Poke loan-out is appalling (imho). It isn't necessary to give details if there are uncertainties, but just to say negotiations are happening, or have fallen through, either inwards or outwards, would not have breached any confidences. Finally a statement at 5pm to sum up and an update on the Jaidi position. If the OS can't be properly used to inform fans on this day, what is it for?
St Will Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 It's fuel for negative and impatient people to fret over. HTH
Channon's Sideburns Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 No news means there is...well, no news. I suspect there may be some 'loans until January with a view to permanent move' - in and out that we find out about shortly. When you look at the amount of paperwork involved in a transfer (they did a good piece on this on SSN earlier) its amazing ANY deals get done before 5pm. From the info they showed, all the agreements between clubs, players and agents all amounted to about a ream of paper. Crazy. Still, if we get a couple of loanees in until January it can tide us over until the cheque book comes out....haha ;-) (Shouldn't laugh - I'm actually really annoyed we haven't signed anyone...REALLY ANNOYED)...
Pancake Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 There is no news to report so the OS reports nothing. I cant see the problem myself....
SO16_Saint Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 it's better to have accurate no news, than utter piffle spouted on other news agencies building up false hope, that further annoys people at the lack of no news
Professor Posted 1 September, 2009 Author Posted 1 September, 2009 There is no news to report so the OS reports nothing. I cant see the problem myself.... Dear Pancake, without wishing to state the obvious, today was not a normal day. Any other day, I would agree with you, but if today was not special, why were fans logging on to this site all day, and why are several people expressing frustration and even anger? No signings on this day surely are news.

Langleysaint Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 OS is a waste of space , if you want saints news its the last place to look , you would think they would come out and say what the situation was we`ve certian transfers as AP has been quite open in the Echo saying he was looking to bring in one or two players building expectations amongst the fans. As a season ticket holder I exspect more.

Any other day, I would agree with you, but if today was not special, why were fans logging on to this site all day, and why are several people expressing frustration and even anger? No signings on this day surely are news. Today wasn't special. It's just the last available day to make permanent transfers until the next opportunity. It's not as if all signings made today are half price. It's the same as any other day which has past over the last month or so, except that it's the last day of the window. Fans and media outlets make it out to be special and over-hype it, but it's not. As Saints fans we should be used to and expect this disappointment better than anybody! I'm also a little disappointed that upon returning home from work (something most posters on here should consider going to ) it appears that we haven't signed anyone, but I don't think we can blame the OS for this. If we'd made a signing, they'd have announced it.

Langleysaint Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 Wrong. If you want Saints speculation, it is the last place to look. If you want Saints news it is one of the first places. The news on Poke was out with the general public way before it was annouced on OS, BUT my point is today with everybodys anticipation of new signings including even on the OS who had its own peice on the last day transfer activity it would have been good of them to inform there customers of the state of play or of the frustrations involved , as I said before it was AP who has raised the expectations .
SO16_Saint Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 I'll give you this one: Poke Rejoins Torquay United Southampton FC - The Official Site 16:25 Poke’s off to Torquay Daily Echo - Southampton FC 10:54 Poke deal in pipeline Yahoo! Eurosport - Sport 11:11 31-Aug-09 not great, if being honest

Any other day, I would agree with you, but if today was not special, why were fans logging on to this site all day, and why are several people expressing frustration and even anger? No signings on this day surely are news. Today is only special if you are taken in by the Sky hype. It is only a big deal for Premiership clubs. Signing out of contract players can continue at any time, and it would seem there are plenty in that situation, and signing loans can start again next Monday for FL clubs. On the positive side apart from Poke going on loan (whcih is good for him and good for Torquay), at least no-one left. So we still have Spiderman, Saga, Gillett and Holmes (and Lallana but I was trying to be positive) all of whom were rumoured to be on their way out.

I'm with you on this one Prof, if the OS did not consider it in some way special why did they publish a ' Deadline Day Update' article in the morning (suggesting that there would be some activity) and then not give a proper update when the window actually closed ? http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10280~1783822,00.html

That being the classic footballer's cliche, yours is almost grammatically correct !!!
CB Fry Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 but if nothing happens, there is nothing to report  Sorry, today nothing happening is something happening. Pardew was quoted at the start of the day (and last week) talking about three signings and at the end of that day (and the transfer window) we have no additional signings. I think a couple of lines from someone at 6pm would have been a courteous thing to do - the club knows there are lots of fans scratching their heads. Disappointing.

If we'd made a signing, they'd have announced it. Media outlets like the OS overhyped it with a "deadline day update" article. I think we would all have been happy if the three additional players Pardew has been talking about for a week had arrived last Thursday, but they didn't. No one asked Pardew to "wait until Tuesday" in my recollection. Pardew certainly talked about things in terms of the window, he didn't say "all the players I want are currently out of contract so I don't care about the window". If anyone has over hyped anything then the OS and our manager has. PS - no one is blaming the OS for not signing players, just not providing something to explain why what the manager told us was going to happen didn't happen.
The boy done well Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 Shouldn't your name be "The Boy Done Good" ?? That being the classic footballer's cliche, yours is almost grammatically correct !!! Nearly-but not quite. Must say I'm a bit under-whelmed by today's non-developments too. Perhaps they are hoping to let us down gently by announcing Jaidi's signing tomorrow-with fingers crossed tonight that he gets a positive response to his application for a work permit presumably after the relevant government office opens. See Craddock scored for Luton tonight so assume he's not been in AP's sights.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 I am hoping that the club are able to notify the FA of intent and then get on and finalise a deal with the player(s) later than 5pm, ready for a next day (Weds) announcement. Straws.
Gigersaint Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 Just noticed there is Pompey pin badge taking centre stage at the header of our OS site too on the 92.co.uk Sky Sports banner. Couldn't those responsible for the OS site at least edit it with a smudge or something?
John B Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 There is no news to report so the OS reports nothing. I cant see the problem myself.... I agree and with Jaidi and a couple of loans the squad we will have is surely good enough to get towards mid table
torsaint Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 The purpose is to tell you Jaidi has signed!

A classic East End grammatical c*ck-up which seems to have been around for ages. I can recall the legendary heavyweight boxing champion Henry Cooper using the " East End version " when commenting on his opponent, in an after-match interview ... in the late 1950's !
bungle Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 Why the hell would the club give away potentially delicate transfer information? No news, no story. The OS is there for official news, not spurious rumour.
trousers Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 (edited) Why the hell would the club give away potentially delicate transfer information? No news, no story. The OS is there for official news, not spurious rumour. Agreed. Which is why people are highlighting the 'speculation' laden OS article earlier the same day as somewhat inconsistent with their 'news only' brief. The words 'cake', 'and', 'eat' and 'it' spring to mind :-) Edited 2 September, 2009 by trousers
