paulwantsapint Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 What the hell do the players get up in training? Shouldn't they start putting in extra sessions: practicing set plays at both ends of team doing lots of fitness work learning what a football looks like & how it moves The best set play takers spend hours extra trying to perfect their skills MLT says in his book that he practiced shooting from corners

I've seen lots of progress. With one or two more signings and a couple of weeks the results will come and we'll finish mid table
kpturner Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 Sorry - but with an OP like that you are gonna get a lot of stick. I imagine the training sessions just involve them sitting around discussing what cars they like and stuff like that....stuff all that "learning what a football looks like" nonsense.
Saint_clark Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 We haven't conceded from a set play since the Swindon game, unless i'm much mistaken.
Saint Bones Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 Can you still go and watch training. I reckon that may be the best way to find out "what they do in training "
RedAndWhite91 Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 I'm pretty sure they know what a football looks like and how it moves...
benjii Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 Our attacking set plays have looked pretty good in the last couple of games.
saint_stevo Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 have we scored from a set piece this season? Also, when was our last league win?
benjii Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 have we scored from a set piece this season? Also, when was our last league win? Yeah, yesterday. Also Saga's "goal" came from a set piece and Thomas hit the bar from a set piece. Against Swindon we nearly scored twice from set pieces and against Brentford Trottman missed a sitter from a set piece.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 Are penalties set pieces? Oh, and on that topic, and sort of off the thread topic, it concerns me that we have conceded 3 penalties in 5 league games.
benjii Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 Are penalties set pieces? Oh, and on that topic, and sort of off the thread topic, it concerns me that we have conceded 3 penalties in 5 league games. Moot point, the penalty was won from a corner.

Against Swindon we nearly scored twice from set pieces and against Brentford Trottman missed a sitter from a set piece. Penalties don't count. Nor do dis-allowed goals Hitting the bar and missing sitters........ideal I was at swindon, don't recall nearly scoring at any point, other than Lambert when he should have lobbed the goaly. Oh and conceding from a corner.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 Moot point, the penalty was won from a corner. What on earth does 'moot' mean? I wasn't referring to your point anyway, I only saw that after posting mine... I was simply asking a question.

saint_stevo Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 its actually moo point, cows point of view, means nothing to anyone
RedAndWhite91 Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 If you don't understand the phrase "moot point" then you are displaying your own ignorance unfortunately. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/moot_point But my so-called moot point wasn't even a moot point, it was just a question!? I have never heard of a moot point before and I did A-Level English Language, I guess I am just an ignorant bastard really.

Oh and conceding from a corner. The penalty came from a corner. Obviously it's not ideal to miss chances but if set-pieces are creating easy chances (which they clearly are, whether penalties or sitters) then evidently there is nothing wrong with our attacking set pieces. As for our defending of set pieces, this has improved since we signed Trottman. Set pieces are not a weakness for us. Give it two or three weeks and you will start to see how much better we are than most of the teams in this division.

Channon's Sideburns Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 All I can say on this it's a shame such questions weren't being asked 4 games into the start of last season... Get with it, we're REBUILDING. It's not going to happen overnight - consolidate this season, walk the division next season...
eelpie Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 I think they should practice shooting at a smaller goalmouth. That should be enough for this week's match. If they can't hit it, sack'em!

If they can't hit it, sack'em!I guess we would have to do that without any goalkeepers, otherwise KD et al will get used to defending a smaller net and get caught out in the real match
eelpie Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 I guess we would have to do that without any goalkeepers, otherwise KD et al will get used to defending a smaller net and get caught out in the real match KD, Bart and Poke will need a larger goal mouth to practice penalty saves, but it will need the kicks to be taken by a machine, otherwise the squad will believe the goalmouths are bigger than they are in reality. Er, more they do already, lol.
Saint Bones Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 Juust out of interest - has anyone been to a training session ? Does anyone know if AP is a hands on coach that gets in and trains with the boys ? I recall Beattie praising Hoddle for training with him and personally helping him with his attacking play/goal scoring.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 That explains why it is so easy to get good grades these days ! Bl**dy New Labour !!!! Haha I'll have you know I'm not a complete div... You sound like my dad eurosaint... "Was more difficult in my day!" Back on topic, and sorry if it's already been mentioned, but doesn't Pilchards watch the training or something like that?
RedAndWhite91 Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 they are improving with every game, COYS Not strictly true, I thought we looked good at the Millwall match, despite the draw, I thought we played some good football and it was a good start on which we would build on and go from strength to strength. However, Swindon away (And Huddersfield away, which I did not attend but heard all about) we played well below average, so far below average in fact some might call it 'absolute sh!t'. Me included. This does not show us improving with every game, but instead shows inconsticency, and in this division, that will not do.
