Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 30 August, 2009 Posted 30 August, 2009 Has been all night on BBC2. You either love it or hate it. I, personally, LOVE IT It's up there with Only Fools as the only TV show to have me in pain from laughing so much...
Colinjb Posted 30 August, 2009 Posted 30 August, 2009 Erm, Hate it. Just don't get it.... Things that make me cringe don't make me laugh.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 30 August, 2009 Posted 30 August, 2009 LOVE IT. Just seen the bit with Gareth in the sidecar, remember the first time me and my Dad saw that we literally could not stop laughing it hurt so much.
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 30 August, 2009 Author Posted 30 August, 2009 LOVE IT. Just seen the bit with Gareth in the sidecar, remember the first time me and my Dad saw that we literally could not stop laughing it hurt so much. And then when he is reading the poem "Slough" "And they made him a Knight of the relm...over-rated! The look Gareth gives the camera, kills me every time!
RedAndWhite91 Posted 30 August, 2009 Posted 30 August, 2009 And then when he is reading the poem "Slough" "And they made him a Knight of the relm...over-rated! The look Gareth gives the camera, kills me every time! It's classic, timeless! Absolutely brilliant haha
Baj Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 Erm, Hate it. Just don't get it.... Things that make me cringe don't make me laugh. I find the office 'alright', but I'm totally with you, cringeworthyness is not comedy.
Thedelldays Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 I think it is brilliant...along with Extras, especially the Ben Stiller episode..
Mase Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT! I was in hysterics most of the night whilst my sister just looked bemused… Really weird how it splits peoples sense of humour.
revolution saint Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 I think it's brilliant. It does tend to divide opinion into extremes though. I thought the US version was slight worse than OK but not abysmal.
Ludwig Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 US version was far better than expected, though.
benjii Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 I think it is brilliant...along with Extras, especially the Ben Stiller episode.. Really? That's the weakest episode of Extras IMO.
forever a red and white Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 love it but last time i watched it i did cringe as much as i laughed but only at David Brent etc
Yate Saint Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 LOVE IT. Just seen the bit with Gareth in the sidecar, remember the first time me and my Dad saw that we literally could not stop laughing it hurt so much. Just thinking of it makes me laugh. Brilliant. Extras was just as good. Looking forward to their next project whatever that may be. I heard it was going to be more serious. I wouldn't mind that because the story behind the comedy in both The Office and Extras were very good.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 OK, but in a similar style, Curb Your Enthusiasm is a lot better.
jeff leopard Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 Has been all night on BBC2. You either love it or hate it. I, personally, LOVE IT It's up there with Only Fools as the only TV show to have me in pain from laughing so much... I'd agree if only fools and horses had run for 5 or 6 series and then called it a day, instead of going year after year until every drop of humour was wrung from it and it had gone seriously bad. as in unrefrigerated meat bad. the office is a much better show for numerous reasons, one of them being knowing when to stop. and its christmas special wasn't $hite, which is pretty much unheard of. series one of extra's was great, but by series two all the guests were trying to out do each other for playing themselves as total w@nkers, instead of actually exposing who they really were, as les dennis did so brilliantly. it was still funny though.
Verbal Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 It's utter ****. Gervais is not funny. That's settled then. Thanks.
RonManager Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 I strted off thinking it was brilliant, but very soon it became totally predictable so I trailed off. What I have thoroughly enjoyed watching, though, is Psychoville. Looking forward to series 2.
benjii Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 Maybe Bizzle could write a stunning critique of it for his Phd.
St Landrew Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 I find the office 'alright', but I'm totally with you, cringeworthyness is not comedy. Yeah, same here. I think its popularity was slightly overblown too. It was among a batch of comedies that you were supposed to like. A kind of emperor's new clothes feel that turned me off immediately. But I gave it a fair chance, and it did have some moments. Sadly, it was almost too squirmingly realistic to be funny though. Besides, I've always hated the office politic environment.
Verbal Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 Besides, I've always hated the office politic environment. Very Dave Brent.
SNSUN Posted 31 August, 2009 Posted 31 August, 2009 Love it. Thought Extras was forced, though Stephen Merchant made it good.
Kadeem Hardison Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 Yeah, same here. Characterisation was probably a bit too close to home.
Wade Garrett Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 I like the 'The Office', but it's no 'The Brittas Empire'.
Jillyanne Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 I like the 'The Office', but it's no 'The Brittas Empire'. Thank christ for that.
Wade Garrett Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 Thank christ for that. You're talking out of your backside. It doesn't even compare to the brilliant 'Keeping Up Appearances'.
skintsaint Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 You're talking out of your backside. It doesn't even compare to the brilliant 'Keeping Up Appearances'. which isnt half as good as 'waiting for god'
Wade Garrett Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 which isnt half as good as 'waiting for god' What about 'Hi-De-Hi', or the unparalleled 'On The Buses'. 'I'll have you Butler'.
OldNick Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 its superb, I loved the bit where he announces he has good news and bad news. The bad news is they were losing their jobs the good news he was getting promotion. 'every cloud and all that' lol
Mao Cap Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 I don't have an extreme opinion. Liked it for the way it skewered over-matey bosses, but didn't love it like a lot of my mates.
St Landrew Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 I'm desperately trying to think of ANY situation comedy show that I watch, let alone like anymore. I realise that, if anywhere on TV, I get my laughs from comedy quiz shows like QI, HIGNFY, etc...
St Landrew Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 Don't know why this popped into my head, but it did. This was a funny series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppazT5HlOo4
saint boggy Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 Don't know why this popped into my head, but it did. This was a funny series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppazT5HlOo4 yeh, i loved Game On, the guy (can't remember his name now) was such a d1ck!!! very funny!! i love The Office, it is hilarious. The first series of Extras was one of the funniest things i've seen (particularly the Kate Winslet phone sex scenes :smt005, and the Orlando Bloom "Willy Wonka?, Johnny w4nk3r more like!:smt043) but i too thought that series 2 really wasn't that funny........ the "sitcom" storyline just seemed to detract from the real comedy,i thought.
skintsaint Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 Don't know why this popped into my head, but it did. This was a funny series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppazT5HlOo4 I 'acquired' this the other month, was worth getting the 3 series...although the 1st series is by far the best. Also Spaced was worth downloading.
Greenridge Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 I'm in the 'love it' camp but it seems you have to have worked in an office to understand the subtlety of some of the jokes and the petty politics. I have a good friend who has never worked in an office and although we normally have the same sense of humour he really struggles with The Office.
Ponty Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 yeh, i loved Game On, the guy (can't remember his name now) was such a d1ck!!! very funny!! i love The Office, it is hilarious. Johnny Shearer Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 The US Office grew on me. I think that has more watchability than the original.
manji Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 It's utter ****. Gervais is not funny. Agreed. He is an unfunny smug git.
St Landrew Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 US version was far better than expected' date=' though.[/quote'] Only saw a couple of episodes. I did find it a lot funnier than the British version owing to actor Steve Carell. I've seen him in a few things now, and he was pretty much the best thing in all of them. He makes great comedy and great pathos too.
skintsaint Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 Steve Carell. I've seen him in a few things now, and he was pretty much the best thing in all of them. He makes great comedy and great pathos too. Eeek apart from his part in Anchorman I havent found anything he has done to be that funny.
