Rickie Lambert is a big signing for a League 1 club I guess - as we paid a big fee for him and people expected him to move to the CCC

but I was talking about big signings in general really. In players like Hammond and Lambert we have made good signings for league 1 but they dont exactly stir the blood do they

Hirst was already past it and injury prone when we signed him - and didn't actually play that much for us

Palmer did work out better than we expected - I still remember seeing him score from what looked like the corner post from the Milton End and not really believing it had gone in or what I'd seen

but both players were past their best and on their way down and that was my point - just like Ripley and Beresford

we have never really signed players at their peak have we - well not since the 80's anyway - we have always signed young players who haven't quite made it at another club (Shipperley, Beattie, etc) or veterans on their way out

our largest ever transfer fee is still the £4 million we paid for Delap - QED!!!!

I'd love to see Southampton spend £8 million, or £10 million or maybe even £12 million on one fantastic player

course I'm not expecting it now in League 1 or even if we were in the CCC - but it would be nice to experience that feeling just once more if we ever make it back to the premiership!

mind you its not seemed to have done Boro or Newcastle much good over the last couple of years has it!

as for now a young fast pacey striker like Craddock, a decent right winger with pace like Chris Hackett from Millwall, a big centre half like Jaidi and a good right back like Ifil would make me happy

oh and perhaps a few loan signings from the big boys in the premiership's reserves or academies would be nice!

I can just about remember Saints signing Keegan and even for a young'un like me at the time it felt great!

I have to say, given what we have been through lately, the thought of spending such sums on one player mades me feel extremely nauseous even if we were to be in the PM backed by a billionaire. Seems obscene doesn't it?

On the flip side, spending £1m on a player in L1 could appear obscene to many other clubs so perhaps I am being a hypocrite.

Max Gradel hasn't even made the bench for Leicester tonight. I have no idea if he's injured or not but it could be because he's lined up for a move. Would be nice if it was to us.

Beat me to it.

I was hoping to see him in action but on the other hand if we are interested then it could be good for us that he's not involved tonight. He's certainly the kind of player we should be after and from what I can tell he doesn't seem to be a 1st choice for Leicester. Strange considering he did so well last season.

They've signed n'guessan, Gallagher and also have Lloyd Dyer all ahead of him.

He wasn't ''first choice'' as such for them last year, he was very much used as an impact player who made alot of sub apps - and did v v well for it too.

Hope we can pull it off.

I have a sneaking feeling that Gradl will be a Saint by 5.00pm tomorrow.Rumour has it that he is one of our top targets and suddenly he is dropped from the leicester squad tonight.Lets hope it is a done deal and permanent not a loan

I think we will get Jaidi in sometime this week.I reckon we will be very busy tomorrow with as many as 3/4 signings depending if Jaidi is sorted out tomorrow and 1 leaving and 3 going out on loan.

It would not surprise me if we sign 2 strikers tomorrow. My predictions are Craddock and Bent as I think there will be a surprise signing tomorrow and someone like Bent,Eastwood or Sharpe will be it!?We shall see but it will be an interesting day

Got Talksport in on the background and an agent is a guest on the show, just heard him say 'Marek Saganowski' so I assume they were talking about him going elsewhere. Anyone hear it? I'm only half listening.

Hirst, Beresford and Palmer were all signed I believe by Dave Jones in 1997 and were a major factor is us finishing 12th after being favourites for relegation at the start of the season. I know from memory both Hirst and Palmer have been criticised on here though it is hard to understand why. Hirst scored some very good and important goals and despite his clumsy appearance Palmer actually did a good job in midfield with his non stop running style, certainly not the most graceful of players but not a reason to run him down. Beresford was also a decent left back. It's easy listing players who apparently were "let downs" but pointless when there is no justification for it.

And if wanted to be really argumentative I'd say Frank Worthington (1983) and Colin Clarke ( 1986) were at least 2 very good deadline signings post Keegan and I'm sure there are more.

Wasn't Pahars a deadline day signing? IIRC

I hate this transfer window thing anyway. I have ever since it came in. I was watching SSN earlier and some guy was saying it's a stupid system that causes panic buying and inflated prices.

He's right too, Man City knew they had until the end of August to sign their players so they splashed out on whoever they could. I remember back in 96 under Souness how much we struggled at the start of the season with a weak defence and little creativity aside from our Matt. We then went out and bought Lundekvam, Ostenstadt and Berkovic which turned our season around. With the transfer window as it is now, we'd have been up poo creek.

That said, the transfer window as it is now does benefit the smaller teams. A team like us doesn't get our players raided by Premiership teams that are close to the bottom of the table, well, until just after Christmas that is.

No Pahars joined us in March 1999 after scoring a hat trick ( a header and a goal with either foot) in a reserve team match in February but then work permit problems ( why always us!) delayed the transfer but not too long for him to make a vital impact of course. In fact you could say he was a deadline signing, just not the August deadline!

Google translation -

Transfer? At any time

- I'm behind two more phones, and to change the club, I am ready even now - he played the remainder still Saganowski trzecioligowego Southampton. On the mainland it will be difficult for me to return, but there is a chance that I'll find a new club in the Championship. In England, players can rent by the end of January - is optimistic about the issue of transfer of Saganowski. - Do not just write about me as a piłkarzu trzecioligowym! I played at this level only a few times - he stressed.

Would never say he was a piłkarzu trzecioligowym. would you?!

it does but football has gone mad!

£4 million for Delap was obscene!

the £3K a week players in the CCC earn is obscene (its not like we don't all have short careers or have to change career 2 or 3 times nowadays is it)

Chelksi & Man Shikh with the £150K a week wages are so far beyond obscene its a different world

still if we've got a billionaire we may as well gatecrash the party - even though we might regret it in the morning I bet we'd have fund whilst it lasted

I don't know too many Pompey fans that regret spending £80 million or whatever it was to win the FA Cup (and about a decade's worth of luck as well)

Why wait for the final day when it comes to Jaidi ? Is he waiting for other clubs as well to show interest?

Jaidi doesn't have to sign today as he is a free agent and from what people have been saying on here I think the hold up has purely been administrative

Posted (edited)

If Jaidi signs, I think we'll not see a RB sign as Thomas has shown he can cover that position, Jaidi will free up Perry who can play at RB and James can also drop back there in an emergency. It cannot be seen as a priority. A winger/striker or two will certainly be a priority.

We might also see a load of youngsters go out on loan to lower league clubs. Saga will secure a CCC loan - a loan because nobody will want to risk so much on a non-scoring striker - he really has not shown enough (i.e. score) to warrant his price tag/salary. We might see Scheiderlin go out on loan or even get sold, but something tells me he will still be around at the end of today. Unfortunately, we will still see the likes of Wotton and Pulis here at the end of the day also sucking up resources.

Hope whoever comes in today has the same impact as the 3 brought in by Ted Bates in a week (no transfer deadlines then) early part of 62/3 season.

Saints were bottom of Div 2 (now championship) and brought in Stuart Williams (a cultured ex Welsh International right back - still lives locally), Dave Burnside (a ball playing inside left) and George Kirby (the dirtiest Centre Forward you ever did see but a gent off the field)

These signings transformed our season and we got with a whisker of Wembley, only narrowly being beaten by Man utd in the FA Cup SF

great memories for all us oldies
