It was designed so you can add a tier on each of the Kingsland, Northam and Chapel stands taking capactiy to between 52k and 54k.

And leaving Itchen (the so called main stand) looking pretty pathetic.

Although I suppose it would be better for players coming out to see the three stands in front of them towering into the sky.

The corporate boxes and the lack of room behind the Itchen Stand make it difficult to put an extra tier on that stand.

Of course. Silly me.

Well, let's hope it comes about then.

Usually I'd agree with you but they have so many projects currently in mothballs, awaiting for an economic upturn, including proposed hotels and leisure facilities. They should see this as being a way of guaranteeing some inward investment to get some of these off the drawing board and into construction.

You'll have to forgive me about not being optimistic but SCC has failed to deliver on almost every single project in the last few years since West Quay. Draw it, present it to the Echo and then scrap it ... over and over and over again...

Still at least we probably have the largest concentration of young professional's flats in the UK - that's definitely a flagship tourist attraction.

I think it's nothing to do with that - it's that the foundations underneath the stand are not able to take a heavier structure than is there already.

IIRC, the ground there is softer as it sweeps down to the river than it is on the rest of the site, so they couldn't build the same type of foundations as they could with the other three stands.

There used to be a great website when SMS was being built called saintsnewstadium.co.uk - anyone know who ran it? It had loads of info about the construction. Whoever it was would still have all the details - and the web archive only shows small bits of the site!

It would slope in the same way Middlesbro and Sunderland do. The foundations were put down for a tier to be 'slotted' on on all sides but because of the executive boxes, it wouldn't be cost affective to build above the Itchen (reconfiguration required).

If they build on the other 3 sides I think the maximum they can achieve is 48,000. I suspect that they would only end up adding another 10k to the current capacity taking up to c42,000.

So that would be us, Bristol City and Plymouth all competing for it. I expect only one would get it.

I'd think we'd be a natural choice on the South Coast, due to the transport links and the fact we already have infrastructure for the ground (i.e. just a few Liebherr cranes needed to add a few thousand seats on, rather than P*mpey who don't have a new ground yet, and look increasingly unlikely to get one).

Posted

An expansion of the ground would be amazing, would definately love another tier.

Can't see why Plymouth wouldn't be choosen, fifa and uefa have a history of supporting far flung locations. Its well located to serve the south west.

Why would anyone want to expand St Mary's?

We can't fill it now.

Of course.....when we get back into the Prem, all those 'missing' supporters will come flooding back.

Yeah, and we easily could build a train station/stop right next to the ground with that bit of railway which already goes past it.

But I do completely agree with this.

Sury it would be cheaper for the FA than funding Portsmouth's new stadium?

All Tories are ****s : FACT.

I'll take a guess at the censored word. Tories lack the depth and sensitivity to be called that.

On a more serious note, Tories are people with differing opinions from those of other political persuasions. Some extreme, others mid stream and others are New Labour.

I don't necessarily agree with their views but in this democracy (something I strongly support) they are entitled to their views.

That didn't make sense, well, after a load of beer it did at the time!

when the bidding was in progress it was not certain that there would be a football club and so that is why the council could not put us forward at that time.Portsmouth did.

Therefore trying to blame the Tories is a nonsense as any council would be foolish to put forward a plan

hmmmm, gaffer, was that when the city council were busting their collective gonads to save this great club??? Helpeng Saints Aid by vetoing some of the red tape that prevented the communicative organisers(;) from using the pitch to host a never to be forgotton day of fun and music??? The same council that let the QE2 float off to some third world city at the end of her glittering career(;)(home to fly by night shady football managers;).... the same council that still has n't sorted out an iconc way to attract visitors to the city and not just let them drift through it. The same council that keeps priceless works of art stuffed in some cellar, whilst loosing key sporting events to our neighbours. A council that fails to build ice rinks, and shuts swimming pools, a council that has no clear blue print to catipult this great city back to where it belongs....

It does n;t matter if it is tory, labour, SDP, liberal or whatever - they are all a clueless bunch of ****s that need shipping out and replacing with some dynamic new councilors that can lead us with a new vision for Southampton.

you wont habe me argueing with oyu about that. For decades we have had too many councillors more worried about workers rights and traffic lights than thinking about making the city commercially wealthy aqnd the rest follows bewhind. While we were srgueing Portsmouth took a large slice of the cities trade and is years ahead IMO

SCC failure to deliver started when the Ice Rink at Top Rank went and we lost not only a place to pick up girls (of the ice) but one of the better ice hockey teams at the time.

Where is the rink we have been promised for nearly 25 years?????

these questions must be asked at the next council meeting.

"Fifteen English cities have been short-listed as prospective venues for matches.

They comprise Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield and Sunderland in the north, Birmingham, Derby, Leicester and Nottingham in the Midlands, and Bristol, London, Milton Keynes and Portsmouth in the south."

Southampton's training facilities would be excellent with the wellington sports ground & eastleigh football club, and also marchwood for the other team. If we were to bid, it should really be ahead of milton keynes, as well as portsmouth.

I particularly resent the fact that mk have bid, as they have no footballing hertiage, and not much else to offer either.

although we might not be able to fill a bigger stadium, evidence would suggest that we would do a far better job than bristol city, portsmouth, multon keynes, plymouth, etc

Perhaps now is the time to let them know.......

...... and remember their response and action when it's time to vote.

The notion of Notts, Leicester and Derby all being host cities seems a bit far fetched.

Not just because two of them are utter **** holes, but also their proximity.

Rather them than P*rtsmouth. Imagine the idea of England travelling foreign supporters would have if they went to P*rtsmouth.
