We often hear people shouting either for their lost dog or kids messing about and so you become immune ot the shouts. jeff leopard Posted 28 August, 2009 Share Posted 28 August, 2009 I know what you mean. Its on a lesser scale, but at Uni, especially on campus, you get lots of screaming and shouting at around 2/3am but you learn to shut it out. One night there was screaming that went on for ages and looking back I guess I should have had a look. Its turns out a guy had impalled his hand trying to climb over a fence and spent the longest night of his life screaming in agony and passing out through blood loss. ouch. scott_saints Posted 28 August, 2009 Share Posted 28 August, 2009 Shouldn't blame yourself, although it is easy to do so. It's similar to the bystander effect really, but not noticing something abnormal in what seems to be normal is quite hard to do....
Smirking_Saint Posted 28 August, 2009 Share Posted 28 August, 2009 Say you did go to help however ?? Knowing this day and age you could have been beaten up or stabbed yourself ?? That is a sick sick way of thinking and i know most of us would still try to help if we could, but unfortunately it is the way of this world

Friend of mine tells a good story about a mate of his moonying someone from a first floor window and then falling out and spearing himself on railings. It's wrong to laugh i know but he tells it so well. And a valuable lesson for the youth of today showing off. Just imagine slowly bleeding to death with your kecks around your ankles... Manuel Posted 28 August, 2009 Share Posted 28 August, 2009 Say you did go to help however ?? Knowing this day and age you could have been beaten up or stabbed yourself ?? That is a sick sick way of thinking and i know most of us would still try to help if we could, but unfortunately it is the way of this world Not necessarily this world. Hasn't the world has always been that way? If you help someone who's being attacked, you risk being attacked yourself. Usually though, especially in the circumstances described above, I imagine most people would see it as a risk worth taking, or wouldn't even properly consider the risk. Thank goodness people have a strong desire to assist each other when they really need it. Don't feel upset nickh, if you'd known what was going on you'd have been out there is a flash, of that I feel sure. You mustn't feel responsible for stuff that goes on that you know nothing about, you can't be everywhere, you can't hear everything.
OldNick Posted 28 August, 2009 Author Share Posted 28 August, 2009 thanks for the replies.i know that it wasn't my fault but to know some poor young girl has been attacked by a creep so close and i wasnt there to help frustrates me.im sure like most men Id be there like a shot and those type of people would run and not risk confrontation with a man. They are only brave against helpless young girls. St Landrew Posted 28 August, 2009 Share Posted 28 August, 2009 Yeah nickh, don't be hard on yourself. If, in the future, there is another regrettable occasion, and you do hear the screams of someone needing help, I'm sure you won't ignore them. Nobody can be blamed for not having the hearing of Superman.
Minsk Posted 28 August, 2009 Share Posted 28 August, 2009 Don't beat yourself up over this Nick, and I empathise with your situation. A couple of years ago I was went swimming with my wife and daughter at a local lake. As we were leaving an ambulance went screaming past us towards the area we had come from. it turns out that there was a 10 year old boy who had been swimming about 500 yards from where we were who had got into difficulty. I discovered the folowing day that he was declared doa at the hospital. As a fully qualified lifeguard, and having been the medical officer onboard my last Royal Navy ship, I am certain (in my own mind) that had I been aware of the situation I could have saved his life. But, as you know, when there is lots of screaming and shouting going on (and especially in a foriegn language) we tend to not look for something being amiss. I found it very hard to realise that I was not at fault for what occurred, and thinking back on it has reawakened my belief that I could have helped - IF ONLY I KNEW AT THE TIME WHAT WAS HAPPENING. And therein lies the answer. We cannot always know what is happening, even when it is very close to where we are. I am certain that you are a good man and that you would do anything you could to help someone in distress or peril. This time your help was not to be, maybe another time it will be. I know it sounds hard right now but keep your chin up mate.
Saint in Paradise Posted 28 August, 2009 Share Posted 28 August, 2009 A friend of mine went to "help" a female who was screaming and he was then beat up by 4 thugs. He ended up with broken ribs and jaw, oh yes the female was part of that gang so was the bait in a trap. This kind of event happened again in the same town a short time ago

OldNick Posted 29 August, 2009 Author Share Posted 29 August, 2009 We have found a news-clip on the Wiltshire Police website. At 21.14hrs on Friday 28 August Wiltshire Police issued a statement to say that the young woman had withdrawn her previous allegation of a serious sexual assault. The police state that the public can be reassured that no such assault took place. They will issue no further statements on the matter. Just an update further to this so called incident. I look forward to Dog's apology

It's peculiar how you become immune to strange noises if you hear them on a regular basis. Slightly off topic, but I live under the Heathrow flightpath, very close to the airport, and don't bat an eyelid when a plane goes over. Yet kids screaming outside get noticed every time. One day a plane is going to crash into my house and I won't have heard it coming. Incidentally when I was at boarding school, a disgruntled, expelled ex-student came back and set fire to the staff room. My bedroom was two flights above it, and I heard commotion, but with it being a boarding school, noise was common and I didn't think anything of it. 5 minutes later the fire alarm went off, we were all evacuated and the staff room was burned to a crisp. Being young, we were all quite excited at this, despite having to sit in a freezing cold chapel in the middle of the night for 3 hours with nothing but our duvets for warmth.
