The Saturday Boy Posted 27 August, 2009 Share Posted 27 August, 2009 Hampshire have won the toss and elected to bat. Team - Adams, Dawson, Lumb, Vince, Ervine, Pothas (w), Mascarenhas ©, Cork, Tahir, Griffiths, Briggs.
Lets B Avenue Posted 27 August, 2009 Share Posted 27 August, 2009 91-0 at lunch. Dawson 48* Adams 43*. Obviously expecting the wicket to turn like Tuesday night's, as they are playing Briggs as a 3rd spinner. Somerset have a good young leggie, Waller, who plays for Bashley in the Southern League. chrisobee Posted 27 August, 2009 Share Posted 27 August, 2009 286/4 at close of play. Slow going at just under 3 an over which suggests it's not a quick batting track. Adams 113 not and good to see Pothas back, he is 27 not out. Ervine was out "hit wicket" which is quite unusual. 350-400 might be a good score and should be well within our scope with Dimi, Cork and the 3 bowlers to come. Banks who bowls right arm offbreaks took 3/79 which is encouraging for our spinners.
chrisobee Posted 27 August, 2009 Share Posted 27 August, 2009 Yorks are struggling at Scrarborough, 99/7 in reply to Warwickshire's 320 who have Sreesanth playing for them. Has taken 4/39.

NI76 Posted 27 August, 2009 Share Posted 27 August, 2009 Ervine's wicket was bizarre, he pulled the ball for four, I followed the ball and watched it cross the rope and when I looked back to the middle the Somerset players were crowding round in celebration and Eddie was walking off! Good stuff from Adams in what has been an excellent season for him although he didn't half spend a long time in the nervous nineties.
bungle Posted 27 August, 2009 Share Posted 27 August, 2009 Yes, Ervine's wicket was very strange, although I missed the shot as I was leaning over to fold up my copy of the Guardian, I glanced up in time to see him tread on his stump. Very unfortunate. Comedy moment was Lumb launching one straight into the sky, only for bowler and fielder to both sprint for the catch and then bail out, leaving the ball to drop about 5 yards from Lumb! Spinners in the morning session, so obviously a turning wicket, which will hopefully suit Tahir. Going again tomorrow.
chrisobee Posted 28 August, 2009 Share Posted 28 August, 2009 Looking at the Table, now is the time for a win (isn't always?)! It would certainly be a very good time to win and with the pitch taking spin already and with a decent weather forecast for Friday and Saturday though possibly showers on Sunday we must have a good chance with 286/4 looking good in view of the pitch report. It is very tight from 2-8 with the only reasonable certainties being that Durham will finish top and Worcester bottom. Worcs are very probably going to beat Notts and Warwicks are well on top v Yorks. 1 Durham 12 186 2 Nottinghamshire 12 149 3 Somerset 12 146 4 Lancashire 13 138 5 Sussex 12 120 6 Warwickshire 12 119 7 Yorkshire 12 117 8 Hampshire 12 2 116 9 Worcestershire 11
chrisobee Posted 28 August, 2009 Share Posted 28 August, 2009 Still going well on 331/5. Adams 140 odd not out, Pothas just out for a useful 41. Dimi in at 7, we SHOULD get 400 now !

chrisobee Posted 28 August, 2009 Share Posted 28 August, 2009 548 all out, Tahir 77 not out ( off 77 balls) and Briggs 36 put on 90 for the last wicket ! Cork made 52 as well. Rather suggests though the pitch isn't as bad as I had hoped though I guess we'll find out when our spinners bowl.

niceandfriendly Posted 28 August, 2009 Share Posted 28 August, 2009 Magic, we took 3 wickets before close of play to leave Somerset on 98/3. Tahir with all three wickets. Good to see Langer came and went without scoring. If we can get Trescothick out early tomorrow we'll be in a great position.

I wonder why Dimi didn't give Briggs a few overs given tahir's success?? :smt017 T'is a bit strange to be honest though Tahir only picked up his wickets late in the day and maybe Hants thought their seamers like Cork and Dimi could make a breakthrough. As it was Cork bowled 9 overs for 10 runs and Dimi 5 overs for 11 runs, both very economical. It was only the pacier Griffiths who conceded a few and that still only 24 off 6 overs. So it would seem that the slower the bowling the greater the threat to Somerset. Spin will be to the forefront tomorrow I suspect unless there is something in the pitch for the medium pacers. Very windy there yesterday, so Dimi opened up bowling ito it and was then replaced by Tahir. Griffiths and Cork bowling downwind whilst the ball is relatively new. Griffiths was bowling quick again, on a slow track and had a ring of 6 slips and gulleys, but Trescothick kept hitting fours through, over and past them. Ok, thanks for that info, shame Trecothick could not hit one straight to a fielder! Anyway, if the weather mirrors that here it will be dry and bright and far less windier. Pressure is certainly on Somerset who realistically can only hope for a draw at best. But oh for the win we need !
Evil Monkey Posted 29 August, 2009 Share Posted 29 August, 2009 Who is this Briggs lad? Never heard of him before yesterday. Looked solid with the bat (for a number 11 at least), but I dont think he bowled.

chrisobee Posted 29 August, 2009 Share Posted 29 August, 2009 Worryingly that would be the only reason I could think of unless one of them was warned 3 times for running on the pitch and unable to bowl in the rest of the innings ? Briggs and Dawson were bowling just before lunch, might suggest Tahir cannot bowl for some reason. We really do need to get rid of Trescothick, he's got his century now. Leicestersaint Posted 29 August, 2009 Share Posted 29 August, 2009 We have finally got Trescothick out and they are 313 for 7 so we might yet manage to enforce the follow on. We really do need to win this game if at all possible.

chrisobee Posted 29 August, 2009 Share Posted 29 August, 2009 Not just yet, Somerset 393 all out ! Tahir finished with 7/140. Dimi did not bowl again so I guess he must be injured. chrisobee Posted 29 August, 2009 Share Posted 29 August, 2009 Well if we can get a couple of wickets before stumps we are in with a chance! Which we didn't and the day ended with Dimi not bowling and Ervine and Tahir (again) bowling incomplete overs so I suspect another injury. But nothing on Cricinfo mentioning any injuries in their report which is pretty abject.
chrisobee Posted 30 August, 2009 Share Posted 30 August, 2009 Well an early breakthrough but unfortunately it was not Trescothick. At least Ervine is no longer shown as bowling an incomplete over!
Leicestersaint Posted 30 August, 2009 Share Posted 30 August, 2009 Any further news on Dimi? Perhaps if we can get another couple of wickets by lunch we can go on to win. chrisobee Posted 30 August, 2009 Share Posted 30 August, 2009 (edited) Yes, looks like Trescothick is going to be their saviour, 144/3 at lunch. No idea what is wrong with Dimi Edit: Hopefully does not seem too serious... But former England opener Trescothick compiled his seventh Championship century of the season...... kept a Hampshire attack lacking captain Dimitri Mascarenhas - who limped off with a bruised heel - at bay long into the afternoon. http://www.rosebowlplc.com/news/lvcc_vs_somerset_day_3/ Edited 30 August, 2009 by chrisobee

stevegrant Posted 30 August, 2009 Share Posted 30 August, 2009 Well now bad light has stopped play - so the fates are against us but why would they come off for bad light when there is an outside chance of winning? I can only presume that they thought "if we can't see it, we're not going to be able to score any runs". Looking out the window here, it's pretty gloomy. Not sure how many overs were left, but probably barely enough with decent light (hence sending Lumb in to open), let alone with dodgy light.
