Looking for some knee advice!!

I've read the forum before with other people talking about there knee problems, so hopefully at least one person will have an expert answer for me!

Basically according to the doctor I tweaked my ligament on the inside of my left knee playing footy. He did some basic tests on the knee, like sitting of my feet, bending the knee right into my chest etc. none of this caused any pain. He said it just needed rest. I left it for about 2 weeks and then tried to play again and although not painful immediately felt a small twinge. Again I've rested for a further couple of weeks and just wondered do I need to build the knee up?? As in lots of cycling, swimming?

Or would I be best seeing a Physio just incase its more serious or he can give me a better idea of what to do than a doctor??

Or will I be able to feel it and just need to play on it as it will be sore first time?

Any suggestions on where to go from here are appreciated!

Well mate, im in for a cruciate ligament reconstruction on Weds morning! If i were you i would be getting it checked out again before you do any more damage. Joe Cole's ACL injury started out as a tweak, 8months later still sidelined! I did mine in December, took a while to get through the consultations and scans etc but worth it i hope.

I would go back to the Dr's, they will send you to a specialist who will refer for an MRI i expect, safest way i reckon.

The hosiptal told me mine would be fine in 6weeks when i did it originally.....9months ago and not played a minute since!

Swimming kills mine, try some cycling, wont do any damage, 'in-line' activities wont do any damage, cross training is also ok

I think I had the same injury (ligament that holds knee cap in place).

I ended up doing physio where the idea was to build up the knee muscle so that it "held" the stretched ligament in place long enough for it to heal. I had originally left it for a fair few months... but it never got better on its own. Always felt uncomfortable.

In the end the physio (months of it) worked. Though my knee is not back to its original state (when are they ever!) it isn't uncomfortable anymore. Overall it took about 2 years, but probably because I was out of the country for several weeks of that and initially didn't get help.

Did my ligament about 20 years ago.

It caused all sorts of problems with the knee not locking into place and grating of the knee-cap and I had to have an Op to cut it and re-connect it.

My advice if it's something like that - do anything else you can to avoid it.

Has caused all sorts of other problems over time, keeping the knee bent for more than 15 minutes causes muscle spasms that take weeks to get rid of on anti-inflammatories.

Never played football again, but managed Cricket & Golf. Thought I was going in for a cartlidge and ended up on crutches for 8 weeks and physio for almost a year.

With mine they had no choice but take the rest and the advice

buggered my knee up a couple of times, now after surgery its pretty much as strong as its ever been

the only advice i'll give is see a specialist. see a physio at worst. seeing a doctor is about as much use as going to see your mum, he's only there to dole out general advice, and thats largely useless.

good luck

Sounds like you tweaked the medial collateral ligament, how did you sustain the injury originally ?? Was it a twisting motion ?? Studs get stuck ?? Knee collapsed ??

Problem is the doctor will just send you away and say to rest it for a set amount of time, you may want to see a physio to see whether they can diagnose it any clearer, or even go back to the GP and ask to see a specialist, though you will be waiting a while.

How much swelling was there in the knee at the time ?? Did it swell up like a balloon ?? From experience, and i ruptured my ACL at 18, had surgery to fix it. Don't mess about with the knee, if you have a weakness in any ligaments in the knee it can cause a weakness of the knee as a whole, open it up to much more serious injuries if you are not careful.

TBH, it doesn't sound like ACL, but if it was me do some cycling, swimming and lunges on the quads to build it up, or even buy a brace to wear for a month or so.

You will have to be very lucky to get a referral on the NHS as it doens't seem like you're in a lot of pain. You will have to be pretty firm with them to avoid being brushed off and told to rest it and take an anti-inflammatory.

I'd have thought you will then wait for ages for an appointment once you have your referral seeing as you will be low priority.

If you can go private, you could see somebody in about a couple of weeks probably. You could have an mri scan done almost at the same time and they can advise you. I can't see you needing surgery so they will probably advise physio which will again need to be paid for. Cost wise, you'll pay approx £100 for initial consultation, about £700 for a scan and something per session for your physio (I think mine was billed at about £40 per session last year but I may be wrong).

Thanks for the replies so far, with regards to your questions. I first hurt the knee playing 5-a-side at Goals, millbrook. I went in for a 50/50 tackle strongly but I am only 18, 5''7 and weigh 9 stone 10 and the guy I tackled was to put it simply older, taller and stronger! When I kicked the ball, we both seemed to connect at the same time and the ball just stayed between us as all my body weight went through the ball.

There wasn't really any swelling, I iced it as soon as I got home. I've been cycling for a couple of days now with no pain when walking.

I have had knee problems for years....caused by hit and run drunk driver and years of football!

Had 4 arthroscopies and finally 3 months ago had half a knee replaced.

If you need the name of a good private knee specialist PM me and will pass on the details of a very good one who has finally sorted mine out.

Private cost 10k though!!!
