Mr X Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 According to IMDB it has just made the top spot http://www.imdb.com/chart/top agree/disagree?
Rory Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 Do you take the IMDb list as mustard? The Dark Knight is third, FFS.
Mr X Posted 7 September, 2008 Author Posted 7 September, 2008 (edited) it's a good overall consensus though and IMDB is considered the best reference, all those top 100 action films etc etc......... shows on channel four are all done from these results Were you implying that dark knight is good or bad? Edited 7 September, 2008 by Mr X
Sheaf Saint Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 No such thing as a 'best film of all time' - it's totally subjective. While I agree that Shawshank is an excellent film, and I appreciate why it has global appeal, I couldn't go so far as to say it's the best ever. I couldn't even say it is my personal favourite; no film can claim that title as there are so many films that I like for completely different reasons that I couldn't possibly place one above the other. It would have to be a 'top ten in no particular order'.
Mr X Posted 7 September, 2008 Author Posted 7 September, 2008 Goodfellas by a mile. Good film but full of cliches
Ponty Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 Is there really that much of a difference between Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi to justify 100 places between them on that chart?
Mr X Posted 7 September, 2008 Author Posted 7 September, 2008 Is there really that much of a difference between Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi to justify 100 places between them on that chart? It would appear so
norwaysaint Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 I like Shawshank but it's not my favourite, that's It's a Wonderful Life. The ridiculous thing is that Shawshank and Pulp Fiction were released in the same year, but what film won the oscar that year? Forest ****ing Gump!
Nexstar Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 Shawshank is an excellent film, couldn't say what my favourite is. But gladiator should definatly make the top 60, and enemy at the gates doesn't make the top 250?!
St Landrew Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 Shawshank is an excellent film IMO. But these things are all relative, and these lists are only useful as a guide. Saint Stevo prefers Pulp Fiction, which I don't like as it glorifies callous violence, and Dog loves Goodfellas, which I think is an ok'ish film. Horses for courses really. Obviously, enough people thought Shawshank was better than other films. It still doesn't make it the best. It is one of my favourites though, and often these things can change with one's mood anyway. I was fixing a computer the other day, and A Matter Of Life And Death was on the TV. I stopped to watch a bit, and stayed until the end because it is another superb film. The best..? Well, no doubt some people would think so.
Saints1980 Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 Finding Nemo better than Scarface? What a silly list.
Rory Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 My top 5: 1. Taxi Driver 2. Dog Day Afternoon 3. 25th Hour 4. Amores Perros 5. Les Quatre Cent Coups (The 400 Blows)
Ash Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 and enemy at the gates doesn't make the top 250?! Why would it? I have nothing against it but, with the exception of Bob Hoskin's Russian accent I there was nothing remarkable about it. The best film ever is the Big Lebowski, anyone who disagrees is a dork. 1. Big Lebowski 2. Barton Fink 3. Lilya 4Ever 4. Carne trémula 5. Little Shop Of Horrors
SuperMikey Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 My top five: 1. Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed 2. Scooby Doo on Zombie Island 3. Scooby Doo and the Legend of the Vampire 4. Scooby Doo and the Cyber Chase 5. The Shawshank Redemption It was a toss-up between Shawshank and Scooby Doo meets the Harlem Globetrotters for fifth tbh.
Deppo Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 Why would it? I have nothing against it but, with the exception of Bob Hoskin's Russian accent I there was nothing remarkable about it. The best film ever is the Big Lebowski, anyone who disagrees is a dork. 1. Big Lebowski 2. Barton Fink 3. Lilya 4Ever 4. Carne trémula 5. Little Shop Of Horrors Sheesh.
Kadeem Hardison Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 Sister Act II: Back in the Habit is the best film of all time, and I'll deck anyone who says otherwise.
Mr X Posted 7 September, 2008 Author Posted 7 September, 2008 I can now confirm that disaster movie is the no 1 film ever, just absolutely breathtakingly good, staggering, and clearly deserves the oscar nod coming its way
Saint_clark Posted 7 September, 2008 Posted 7 September, 2008 Sister Act II: Back in the Habit is the best film of all time, and I'll deck anyone who says otherwise. I say otherwise. :supz:
oldskoolsi Posted 8 September, 2008 Posted 8 September, 2008 As someone who made the effort to see every film on thr top 250 I would say that it's a good indication of what 20-30 year old americans think are the best films of all time. Once you get your head around the fact that's imdb is full of trolls and old/foreign films hardly get a look in it's a pretty good way to find good films. the best lists to look at are the genre/decades lists. The more interesting films trun up there. On the other hand theres no way Shawshank the is the best films of all time. Good, maybe even very good but not the best.
CabbageFace Posted 8 September, 2008 Posted 8 September, 2008 1. Commando 2. Aeon Flux 3. Waterworld 4. Hulk 5. Fantastic Four
saintmorley Posted 8 September, 2008 Posted 8 September, 2008 in no particular order... Ernest Goes to Camp Ernest Saves Christmas Ernest Goes to Jail Ernest Scared Stupid Ernest Rides Again Ernest Goes to School Slam Dunk Ernest Ernest Goes to Africa Ernest in the Army I hope someone here agrees
LVSaint Posted 9 September, 2008 Posted 9 September, 2008 Is there really that much of a difference between Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi to justify 100 places between them on that chart? Yes. Different (and superior) director. Return of the Jedi ended up a bit like the muppet show in space.
NorthamSteve Posted 10 September, 2010 Posted 10 September, 2010 Police Academy 1 Police Academy 2 Police Academy 3 Police Academy 4 Police Academy 5
ecuk268 Posted 10 September, 2010 Posted 10 September, 2010 Goodfellas by a mile. Possibly but Godfather II runs it close

angelman Posted 10 September, 2010 Posted 10 September, 2010 Not in any particular order: Kind Hearts and Coronets The Killing Fields The Good, The Bad & The Ugly Blade Runner Aliens
saint lard Posted 10 September, 2010 Posted 10 September, 2010 What,no Cheech and Chong? disgraceful.
Johnny Shearer Posted 10 September, 2010 Posted 10 September, 2010 IMO there can never be a greatest film of all time due to the varying tastes everyone has. However I am dismayed that The Warriors is not in the top 20 at least.
bridge too far Posted 10 September, 2010 Posted 10 September, 2010 See - I'd probably have a list of musicals Chicago West Side Story Oliver Moulin Rouge you get my drift?
dune Posted 10 September, 2010 Posted 10 September, 2010 Treasure Island 1990 staring Charlton Heston
Block 5 Posted 12 September, 2010 Posted 12 September, 2010 In no particular order....... The Godfather Yojimbo The Maltese Falcon Pulp Fiction Spirited Away Citizen Kane
percy windham Posted 13 September, 2010 Posted 13 September, 2010 Seeing as everyone is else is doing it: no order... The Wicker Man Suspiria Time Bandits Slaughter House 5
Saint_Jonny Posted 13 September, 2010 Posted 13 September, 2010 I like Shawshank but it's not my favourite, that's It's a Wonderful Life. The ridiculous thing is that Shawshank and Pulp Fiction were released in the same year, but what film won the oscar that year? Forest ****ing Gump! Ah but IMO forest gump is a better film than shawshank. Shawshank is a brilliant film obviously, but as has already been said, its totally subjective. I enjoyed TRON more than I did shawshank, see? You cant look at a list and take it as red.
Saint-scooby Posted 13 September, 2010 Posted 13 September, 2010 What was the Cheech & Chong film with space coke

chrisobee Posted 14 September, 2010 Posted 14 September, 2010 An excellent film helped by the fact I like both Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. My favourite films going back a way are : The Life of Brian The Great Escape Marathon Man Dead Poet's Society Enemy Mine War of The Worlds ( 1953 version and not the very disappointing 2005 remake) Point Break Solaris The Andromeda Strain The Omega Man
Block 5 Posted 14 September, 2010 Posted 14 September, 2010 hehe! Ah the days watching this film cained. Great days... Indeed!
angelman Posted 14 September, 2010 Posted 14 September, 2010 Cheech and Chongs 'the next movie' Personally, 'up in smoke' is superb imo. The 'ajax woman' always makes me grin... I have some Cheech and Chong videos (but no longer a video player) if anyone wants them.
