England v Aussies 5th Test

Brilliant, just brilliant! Great bowling by Broady and Swann wonderfully making the most of the pitch and backs up Warne's dismay at Aussies not picking a spinner. North was a bit unlucky but then Strauss and Bell were out off no-balls yesterday. Aussies look ragged and if England polish this innings off quickly, we can turn the screw. What's the weather forecast like?

I see we have come to the decisive evening of the ashes.

England throwing it all away ;)

I think Australia would have a lot of difficulty getting a target of 250 on this wicket. Even if England fook this innings up they still have a decent chance of winning. In the end I think it will be the toss that decided this Test.

Not exactly a great day for either side (it would have been for England had it not been for those 3 wickets at the end), but I'm still bloody chuffed with the way things are going at the moment. Great stuff from Broad and Swann!

I rekon if we can scrape our way to 180 (or more) we'd be strong strong favourites to win it! :p[-o

Good analysis from Holding towards the end on Bell & Collingwoods dismissals. For the first 10 viewings they looked awful, but he showed how the ball had slowed up off the pitch and they were both forced to be a little out in their timing.

Cannot see them getting 250 in the 4th Innings but then it will be so tight one mistake could swing it so the further over 300 the better

So reckon we need over 130 and that we could struggle, but if we are going to win this then one of the bowlers has to be the hero in the 2nd innings. Or Trott will do it.

History says it won't be Freddie (in a Bradmanesque way) Broad has had his moment, COULD he do it again or is it time for the old Harmy to come back for one last hurrah?

Botham could yet get back home for his Sunday Lunch!

Edge of seat stuff, to quote the movie, "What a day to give up glue sniffing"

A lead of 230 on this pitch with 7 wickets in hand is a position I would have gladly have taken this morning. The pitch simply is not going to get any better though I'd be hoping we can get up to 160+ and leave Australia needing the highest score of the match to win.

Bookies odds are England 1/3, Aussies 7/2, Draw 20/1.

Actually regardless of the 3 wickets it was still a great day for England and given the Aussies strange decision not to field a specialist spinner that could well prove crucial though I wished we had fielded Panesar or Rashid instead of Harmison.

We've given ourselves a great chance of winning this...

There's even a tiny tiny part of me that wants to stay home tomorrow and watch instead of going to the match... luckily I can keep that part quiet with mobile internet updates...

Don't know why people can't see Aus getting 250 on this wicket, especially if they end up having 2 and a half days to nudge their way to victory... :o

This is still finely balanced. They will be all but beaten if we can bat most of the day tomorrow and we maybe smack another 220-250 to our existing 59... We need to make sure we are completely out of reach, regardless of the wicket IMO.

FWIW, Collingwood's dismissal was wrong wrong wrong... gah.... :-(

C'mon England!

No. I'm with you on the 250 worry mate. If WE were chasing I would say no chance, but that lot, I think we would crumble under the pressure and start to try and bowl them out instead of letting the ball do the work like Broad did today.

The positives I tale is that Broad Swann et al have seemed to manage to get us around 80+ runs per innings. In some ways Swann & Broad have looked better at the crease than Collingwood & Cook.

So if you add 80 to what we have already, then I think 300 IS a big ask, and if we can get past that by batting through until after lunch it would give us 150 overs and scoring at even 2 an over may not be easy in the 4th Innings.

Can Trott, Prior & Flintoff get those 80 more runs between them with the tail chipping an extra 20/30 runs?... THAT's the big question, allows Strauss to attack

At the end of the day, if Freddie can stay in for 90 minutes against the part time spinners...........

But he won't, it's fate

Meanwhile, wonder how the Aussie Press is reacting to Marcus North coming on first change....... he did well but thank heavens it wasn't Hauritz

Completely different situation and no relevance at all to this match other than it shows what we already know which is take nothing for granted. Hence I'm really hoping and optimistic we can get past the Aussies 1st innings score and hopefully they'll need to be chasing around 350. At the way the game is at present I don't think anyone would prefer to be in their position and I'm very confident we'll win.

Tomorrow is only day 3 so unless weather intervenes then the number of overs left is going to be around 270 and not the 180 I think you are working on.

I was sort of hoping we could bat for 90 overs

Yeah ok right you got me!

Well spotted, luckily the Sky Commentary Team (yep we get them here) make the same mistake!

Thin the only people I know who could bat on that pitch for 270 overs are me & Chris Tavare, the difference is that in that time I could rocket to wow almost 40 runs

WTF? Today has been the best day for England for four years! I think we're already close to having enough, but even worst case scenario that we only get 100 more will surely be enough on this pitch. I see that all the main Aussie papers are having a right whinge about it.

Agree that it would be nice if we had Monty or Rashid but am sure we'll be alright. LOL at the Aussies for not picking a spinner on this pitch - I think it's fair to say that Ponting and the Aussie selectors wont be on Warne's Christmas card list!

The fact that the Aussies conveniently seem to overlook is that not playing a front line spinner was an horrendous mistake, no team should ever go in to a Test match and have to rely on part time spin. As for the pitch well if I were the groundsman I wouldn't be looking to produce a belter of a pitch in a game which England needed to win. I just hope we ram home our advantage today and listen to even more whingeing !

329 lead at Lunch with six wickets in hand. 400 is the min lead, 450 acceptable and 500 the declaration / get slogging total. Batting has looked ok today, although we have a spinner!

Assuming we don't get bowled out I'd like to see us bowl at sometime today.

What a great day for England, even watching Jimmy Anderson taking the p*ss at the end.

Well done Trott.

The heavy roller seems to take the life out the pitch for a couple of hours so would expect to see fun and games starting around lunchtime tomorrow. Strauss almost acknowledged that with his field settings.

Had a load of work to do today but just sat and enjoyed, the tension and the nurdling in the morning and the splatting at the end.

Can't believe we got a lead over 500, if you'd told us that at the beginning we'd have called for men with white suits. But after their start, damned glad we DO have that lead.

Let tomorrow be Freddie's day though, c'mon on Big Man upstairs, just this once, PLEASE can we have a happy ending and a perfect send off to tell our grandkids about?

PLEASE?

TBF, if it was me, i would have kept batting, at the very least till this morning (sunday), give them as little time as poss, and as bigger score as possible.

That said however, i think if the ozzies get anywhere near the 546 total on this pitch then they deserve it.

We have one hand on the ashes, it is for us to throw away.

Australia were 70 odd for 0 in the 1st innings and only managed 160. Whilst I'm sure they'll show more resolve this time round I'll be surprised if they manage above 300.The pitch will get even worse and especially with the very warm weather forecast for today.

If by some miracle they did get the runs required I'd rate it as the finest achievement by a team chasing a total I have ever seen. However, it simply isn't going to happen !

Don't worry about that, the Sky crew pointed out it would be the biggest score EVER achieved in first class cricket, let alone Tests!

They were having great fun commenting about Gentlemen v Players being something like 497 back in 1900. One of the scores at the top of the list was posted in 189something. You can't be THAT old?

Mind you we may all age a bit in the next 8 hours without a breaktrhough before lunch!

its going to be interesting for sure, but as long as we don't panic, or try too hard to break through, we should get there.

but however it turns out we can all take pride in how England have come back after the 4th test, and how, slowly but surely, Strauss has started to resemble a world-class captain/opening batsman. It really wasn't that long ago he was on the verge of being dropped, and then the only big scores he could make were through grabbing ones and twos. And now against the Aussies he's playing some beautiful, aggressive cricket.

Whilst Trott, Broad and (hopefully) Swann can spend the rest of their lives claiming that they were the one who really won the game and the Ashes for England, let us not forget little put-upon Bell, who's unconvincing 72 played a massive role in getting the team past the horror of the forth test.

Good luck England!

Randall & Hopkirk?

I've got a ticket for tomorrow. Will I be going or not? Well now there's two out, maybe not.
