BadgerBadger Posted 20 August, 2009 Posted 20 August, 2009 Thinking about taking the missus somewhere for a 2 night city break in europe for our wedding anniversary, not paris, barcelona etc somewhere eastern or baltic - any recommendations?
Robsk II Posted 20 August, 2009 Posted 20 August, 2009 Prague is superb. More commercial than it once was, it's still a beautiful and interesting city with plenty to see and do. Bratislava is also good, less well known but still nice in the old parts. Krakow in Poland is lovely and cheap, too.
SO16_Saint Posted 20 August, 2009 Posted 20 August, 2009 Budapest is supposed to be pretty pictueresque. Also as Robsk II said, Prague. How about somewhere like lapland or the Northern Lights ?
BadgerBadger Posted 22 August, 2009 Author Posted 22 August, 2009 Krakow looks good, wot about Rome heard it's the marmite city, some people love it others would rather chew their arm off than go again
red and white saint Posted 23 August, 2009 Posted 23 August, 2009 I no its not what you had in mind but lisbon is brillant for a city break
saints_is_the_south Posted 23 August, 2009 Posted 23 August, 2009 Rome is absolutely amazing. +1. Been many times, never get bored of it.
Robsk II Posted 30 August, 2009 Posted 30 August, 2009 Just got back from a bit of a tour - Prague is still lovely, more commercial than it was last time I was there 7 years back, but still awesome. A bit of a curve ball - Hamburg is very nice, really cosmipolitan, pretty. Also Brugges, gorgeous place. Some less well known places I went on my grand tour include Breda, which was not bad, though smaller than the others (but I reckon a decent night out and quite pretty) and Munich, which was big, and probably deserves more of a reputation as a destination than it has.
View From The Top Posted 30 August, 2009 Posted 30 August, 2009 I travel a lot and prefer cities away from the commercial mainstream. I would recommend Parma in Italy. University city with a wonderful history and at the heart of Italian cooking excellence. Fly direct from Stansted, cheap as chips.
sotonjoe Posted 30 August, 2009 Posted 30 August, 2009 I no its not what you had in mind but lisbon is brillant for a city break It's interesting you should say that since Lisbon is my most disliked city I've ever visited; after Portsmouth. I thought it was a real dive, full of freaks and hawkers. It's the only place that two separate blokes have openly offered me cannabis at 10am in a central pedestrian area. Not 'brilliant' at all in my experience. The cakes and pastries on the other hand, were just about the only part of it which could be deemed brilliant.
FarehamRed Posted 30 August, 2009 Posted 30 August, 2009 Tallinn is quality, just don't take the Mrs.
Colinjb Posted 30 August, 2009 Posted 30 August, 2009 Tallinn is quality, just don't take the Mrs. Even if she swings both ways?
BadgerBadger Posted 30 August, 2009 Author Posted 30 August, 2009 Wanna do Scandanavia but beer is too expensive - on a bit of a budget trip Budapest and Prague both high on the list as is Slovenia but I'm drawn to Italy and thought Rome maybe too expensive, Parma sounds interesting. The more I look into this the more I wanna get in a car a bugger off for 3 months and do the lot
Mase Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 Vienna. Pretty expensive but you get what you pay for in this situation!
LVSaint Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 It's interesting you should say that since Lisbon is my most disliked city I've ever visited; after Portsmouth. Yes that happened to me too in a very touristy part of town but not exactly a deal killer. What else happened to you there that makes you hate the place? Just curious. IMO, a cracking place with tons of character and warmth but I did spend many summers of my childhood there.
LVSaint Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 I think Florence is nicer than Rome. Easily. I'd fly onto Pisa (Easyjet) and explore Tuscany than go south to Rome.
Saintandy666 Posted 1 September, 2009 Posted 1 September, 2009 I think Florence is nicer than Rome. Looks nicer, but Rome is a better experience.
Marsdinho Posted 2 September, 2009 Posted 2 September, 2009 Have you thought about taking her up the Windmill
Rattlehead Posted 3 September, 2009 Posted 3 September, 2009 I think Florence is nicer than Rome. Also agreed, although I do like Rome as well. As far as European cities go, I think Madrid is probably my favourite. Dubrovnik nice and also fairly cheap. If you could extend it to more than 2 nights, you could do a dual centre Helsinki-Tallinn weekend, flying into one and out of the other with a 2 hour ferry trip between them. When is said wedding anniversary? Can make a difference to recommendations.
