Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 18 August, 2009 Share Posted 18 August, 2009 I go up the stairs fairly regularly and am quite fat (especially on a monday after ****ing up at the weekend) and today I was offered some stair rods.... None of those runners, just some mild steel grips.. for the first time I thought about it... has anyone got any...or willing to admit it..? St Landrew Posted 19 August, 2009 Share Posted 19 August, 2009 (edited) I've fitted stair rods. Look quite good too afterwards. No substitute for a properly fitted carpet with gripper though. EDIT: Next week I'm fitting the first Axminster carpet I've done in years. Not really looking forward to it actually, as it's a bugger to stretch/tension properly. But it is nice quality. Robsk II Posted 19 August, 2009 Share Posted 19 August, 2009 Nothing like gripper for bloody standing on in socks, though. maybe I DO like stair rods. Not sure I've EVER seen any, though. I suppose I must have.

You a carpet fitter SL, I didn't know that. Not an easy job, a lot of people are going back to good old floorboards at the mo. I just did our front room, wooden floors are lovely. Wood is a living thing, sorry but carpet is a thing for 'things' to live in. So much healthier too, a nice cool room never causes asthma.

All name's are lame until the artist is famous, would you say that naming a band after an insect is lame? What about including the word 'carpets'in a band's name? That would be inspiral to some. fyi, 'raining stair rods' is an older persons term where I come from for heavy rain "Bloomin 'eck mate, it's rainin' stair rods out there, I'd take a brolly if I were you". "Cheer chav-mate, I think I will, although I probally wait a while for to see if it don't ease off a bit first. No point getting me brolly wet if it be gonna stop in foive minutes is there"? Toilet mats are a necessity but unless kept clean...and as for bathroom carpets, now you have a perfect place to get a disease. I like the look of the moderen wooden floor but if you have them throughout it is like living in a church hall.Noisy.

Is their purpose to keep your bare feet warm when sat, or is it to act as a mop for men who splash, which is probably about 99% of us. As soon as they perform their function they should be chucked in the wash. Much better to just mop up as you go imo.

Jeepers, I understand now - as I'm about to hit 40 I hope you'll accept my youthful ignorance. Having digested the full extent of the word play, I'm afraid to say the name is still pretty lame: "Stairs", "Rods", "Rodstairs", "Sitar Roid" are probably better. It's the raining reference which draws one's mind to The Weather Girls and cocomittant lameness which lets the band name down. Nevertheless, I appreciate the unextinguished drive within you which makes you think of names for bands, no doubt fronted by yourself, that will never exist. As such, I salute you. My own personal imaginary band is Teapot 2000 - a band that never existed in 1990.

hamster Posted 21 August, 2009 Share Posted 21 August, 2009 so do these assist in any way for the upward assent of the stairs or are they just meant to 'look nice' Their functional purpose is to hold the carpet into the recessed part of the steps. The real attraction is that they combine practicality (and conform to modern H&S regs) with elegant beuaty. I really like the actual brass rod ones, like these: Although technically they may be considered brass bars not rods. Due to the ones I grew up with being the side hinged two piece affairs, I would have to put them at number one of my stair rod chart. Obviously I accept that others have their own favourite styles for their own personal reason, but as I say for me it is the hinged type. I can't find a picture of any, that is how rare they are, what more can I say, that is how rare they are.

hamster Posted 21 August, 2009 Share Posted 21 August, 2009 I believe these very articles feature on the cover of the August edition of Stair-Rod Monthly (now incorporating Balustrade Enthusiast). I very much doubt it, as the ones that I speak of getting me going, were de rigeuer on army estates. I would not be surprised to find that they were a meld of captured German stormtroopers helmets. On a serious note, one of our future projects is to do up the hall, stairs and landing, maybe the study area too. Brass stair rods are now top of my shopping list. Have you ever come across the type/design that we had in our army house? hamster Posted 21 August, 2009 Share Posted 21 August, 2009 Don't worry SL, I found some just like the ones I grew up with, these but darker: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/stair-rods-copper_W0QQitemZ160356919091QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Antiques_Architecural_RL?hash=item2556046733&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 Actually, if you have a look on E-Bay, there are loads, and the old ones are very good value. There is one set made of oak. Oak ffs, I would love some oak stair rods. If I had a house with two staircases, I would deffo have a set of oak ones on one of them. Gorgeous. St Landrew Posted 21 August, 2009 Share Posted 21 August, 2009 Hamster, you do realise that the ones you see nowadays are playacting versions of the ones from the dim distant past. They don't actually hold the carpet in place, and are much more of a showpiece than anything else. It's all tacked or grippered down, with the rods screwed into place as a bit of icing. Nice looking, but if they tried to do the job for real, people would be slipping down the stairs like Lord Greystoke on a tea tray. By the way, only proper stair carpet for stair rods, or edge bound good quality carpet. It's cheaper to just go full width, if less appealing.
