Huffton Posted 18 August, 2009 Posted 18 August, 2009 As hard as it may be. This team is at least a month behind where it should be, due to how late the takeover happened and then APs appointment. He has had no real pre-season to get the squad how he wants it. There are an awful lot of games left and a lot of points to be gained. Yes things look pretty bad at the moment, but lets hold off the big red panic buttons until xmas. The new owners have already said they have a five year plan in place. Thats 260 weeks, not 2. My personal view is that this season is all about survival, knocking out the -10 points and staying in the league, and stabilising the club. For me a mid table finish would be a real result. The owners are already showing they are backing the manager, and for once we have a boss with a proven track record, and hopefully now a board that will listen too him, but he needs time. Keep the faith people, it won't happen overnight, but it will happen. And to hose muppets who are already calling for APs head, **** off to stamford bridge or some other plastic football wonderland:mad:

trousers Posted 18 August, 2009 Posted 18 August, 2009 I dont think many are suggesting Pardew out just commenting on his team selections and tactics. Aye. Tactics are something a manager can, and should, get right from 'day 1'. Ok, the team might not gel immediately but one doesn't need time to bed in the simple mechanics of tactics.
CB Fry Posted 18 August, 2009 Posted 18 August, 2009 It is absolutely the right time to panic. Pardew talked about chalking off the ten points by the start of September which as an objective was neither unrealistic or unachievable by organising (and selecting) the right personnel. We are now way off track. Yes it is three games in but we are p155ing the collective anticipation hope and goodwill up the wall very quickly. Charlton have made a cracking start under Pardew's deputy. Leeds used -15 to charge up the league. I'm sick of people saying how impossible our task is. Pardew is being paid hansomely for a job his CV says he can do. He does need to start doing it quick. And no, I am not calling for his head, but I am sick of season after season of lame give them until Christmas, no give them until March, no point sacking him now etc etc. Pardew is the big name manager in this division, there is no one bigger. He has to deliver.
team-saint Posted 18 August, 2009 Posted 18 August, 2009 I think as fans we have a right to ask why he didn't make any subs until the last 10 minutes and why we have played awful for two games in a row. That doesn't mean we want him sacked. Only a complete moron would say that.
dellish Posted 18 August, 2009 Posted 18 August, 2009 not to sure just got back, should have lost 4 0 .way off the pace very very poor no one came out with any credit

CB Fry Posted 18 August, 2009 Posted 18 August, 2009 Reminds me of post-match discussions on here when Burley was in charge....he being the master of unfathomable substitutions of course Pardew was always going to be a Burley or a Strachan - big-ish name with success and failure behind him, who could go either way. Lets hope his Burley period is a soon-forgotten blip and we get the full Strachan by the end of the year.

You can't carry on blaming it on lack of preseason, or it being previous managers players. We looked absolutely appalling tonight and AP demonstrated tactical naivety and lack of ability to make subs (needed the crowd to tell him). Panic may be a bit over the top but I don't think I have ever seen such a bad game of football, sad thing is I thought we played quite well against Millwall, but we have regressed. Lack of confidence and it starts from the back.
.comsaint Posted 18 August, 2009 Posted 18 August, 2009 why oh why oh why oh why oh why do we keep getting done time & time & time again by set pieces? Until we learn to defend them - we're always gonna be on a hiding to nothing. Do we talk/discuss/learn to deal with defending set pieces over at Staplewood? Same old same old...
oggiee Posted 18 August, 2009 Posted 18 August, 2009 If we had won tonight everyone would of been saying we are promotion contenders now, new signing tommorow, new CB soon, but no. we lost one game and everyone grabs the pitchforks and runs for Pardews office, it really is sad. Its one bad result, and it is a bad result, but thats it, we have over 40 games left.

What we should be seeing is as hard working outfit, motivated and losing because they lack ability. Or preferably, winning. Not too much to ask?
HornseySaintsFan Posted 18 August, 2009 Posted 18 August, 2009 There is still much surgery to do on the team. We will get better and we will be one of the strongest teams in the league. Ap is the right manager. Believe. Reactionary message boards have got us nowhere for years. Ffs

Its one bad result, and it is a bad result, but thats it, we have over 40 games left. It's not just one bad result though is it? Saturday seems to have slipped your mind already - and that was a shocking performance too. If it hadn't been for Kelvin - Huddersfield would have chalked-up double figures! It's not just the results either. I can handle getting beat IF the lads had a gameplan, a purpose, and put the effort in. But they're not. We seem scared sh1tless to have a go - to give someone a game. It's as if they've all met up an hour before kick-off for the very first time & never met before! I'm sure Pardew will get us into some sort of shape eventually - but the players are going to have to do their bit too - and right now - they don't appear to be doing so.

Its one bad result, and it is a bad result, but thats it, we have over 40 games left. But it isn't just one bad result, is it? Even without the -10 points, this is the sort of form that if it continued would have us headed towards the fourth division. OK, it is still very early days and we have made some decent signings of fresh blood. But it is evident that several other new signings will have to be made, as somehow the current squad is behaving like a rabbit caught in the headlights. We entered a new dawn with new wealthy owners, a manager with a decent reputation of success in this division, some decent new signings. The fans are all on board. What a pity that some of the players don't seem to share the new mood of optimism and confidence.
Wes Tender Posted 18 August, 2009 Posted 18 August, 2009 You beat me to it .comsaint, with exactly the same opening line!

I think our biggest problem is that we are being asked for trust and faith from an organisation and group of people who have abused both in spades for far too long. That we have a short fuse now, is no more than could be expected.
Rebel Posted 18 August, 2009 Posted 18 August, 2009 its simple really we need to spend about £5 million (fees and wages) or so on another 5 or 6 genuine first team players if we are going to stay in this league that's not Pardews fault - or Cortese or Liebherrs - its Burley's and Lowe's

Tbh I have been panicking about the fate of saints for the last 4 or 5 years. I am fully behind pardew but if he continues in his stubborn, non tactical mode then I won't be for too much longer.
Gigersaint Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 I’m hoping things are not as bad as some fear so far and appear to be considering how much we have fallen in the last few seasons and how low the morale must be in the team that has seen a fair bit of disruption. Somewhere between each of the leagues there surely has to be a fair over lap of quality/skill that matches top half of league 2 to the lower half of league 1, and the same with the top half of league 1 to the lower half of the championship. Looking at some of the results of the promoted sides from league 2 who are a good match to lower teams in League 1 and quite high on confidence I would say they wouldn’t be too disappointed with the start they have made considering some of the opposition they have played so far. By the same token and taking us and Norwich as examples as teams relegated from the Championship should we really be expecting to beat some of the sides that have been strong at times at home and finishing in mid table in league 1 last season? I understand that Swindon were quite poor last season but looking at their first two games this season and the positions/morale of both teams they played would those teams not have been quite high in confidence whereas ours would be quite low? So far we have played Millwall taking a point and lost to Huddersfield who are high confidence teams challenging for promotion. Losing to Swindon away who are going to put in a fight for a home win no matter what the opposition (Maybe no worse than us losing to Palace/Derby away when back in the Prem as an equal?) and with a new manager in place trying to do the job of several people at once and probably (measured by several comments tonight) still has to learn a lot about our current squad and what they’re capable of without having much time in pre season to do so, I’m not too surprised with our current results so far. With our current team, with new players yet to settle in and with another signing or two apparently to strengthen further I believe we could still progress well in this league enough to turn over teams such as Swindon away and finish in a decent mid table position, hopefully not to far away from the play offs to give us the confidence for the big push to promotion/play offs next season. In my heart I would love to reach the play offs this season but I don’t want to raise my hopes and be disappointed if we don’t make it. We may not be strong enough after starting the rebuild this season but next season, my confidence and expectations and I hope, the players wearing the red and white stripes will also be that much higher too.
Kadeem Hardison Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 I'd rather we hit our form come Christmas than start brightly then fade away. And let's face it, we haven't had the pre-season to keep us going all season. No reason to be worried yet, IMO.
Pancake Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 If we are not on 0 points by Sept 19th, I will panic.
John B Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 If we are not on 0 points by Sept 19th, I will panic. Does it not also depend how far we are from fifth from bottom
foghorn Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 I think I'm still on a high from the fact I still have a team to support at all!
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 That was a very worrying performance last night. I'm not looking for Pardew's head, but, money NEEDS to be spent ASAP on some defenders!!!

Pancake Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 Does it not also depend how far we are from fifth from bottom Maybe, but I think the -10 is a noose round our necks at the moment. Shift that and we can then push on up the league.
sotonianproud Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 The thing is for me it is not so much about the fact we lost, more so how we played and that was truly awful!

John B Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 Yeah. Glad to see having them in Sunday for extra training paid-off then... Well according to Pardew they were better last night
badgerx16 Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 As posted last night on the post-match thread. We have 43 matches left, and to attain the minimum number of points that over the last 4 seasons has kept teams in this division we need to win 15, draw 14, and therefore lose no more than 14. Every game we churn out a peformance like the last two, that equation gets worse.
red&white56 Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 Well according to Pardew they were better last night Yeah, we lost 1-0 rather than losing 3-1, that's better isn't it???????
Norm Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 No - that is not it. It is the manner of the performance which is the concern. Bad results can be stomached - performances like that cant. the team were booed of by a massive away following. 3000 people on a tuesday in league 1. I had a call from a pal that went to Swindon. He has been watching Saints for some 40 years now and in his opinion, we would fail to beat Eastleigh with this team and tactics. Seems that too many players are just not good enough (his opinion). Too early to panic? Hmm, I'm not sure.
RonManager Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 If we are going to panic, how do forum members feel we should go about this? My favoured method is to run naked and screaming around a field near me waving an axe and shouting obscenities at the cows (they find it amusing too I might add). Works for me. However, if the admin chaps would like to organise a forum mass panic I would be up for that too. Also, how long should we panic for?
revolution saint Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 The manner of last night's defeat is the big worry - I didn't go but a friend of mine did. She's normally pretty level headed but she was quite down about the game. However, we had a really, really poor team last year that got worse through lack of confidence, we've lost our so called better players (and still spent less than we've brought in), the team only won once in pre season, the new manager hasn't for whatever reason been able to plug the gaps yet and he hasn't had a lot of time to do that and coach the side - he didn't have his own assistant until just before the start of the season and our scouting network is apparently non-existent. There's a lot of reasons why it will probably take time. It's easier to type "we need to cut out goals from set pieces" than it is to actually do it, just as it's easier to say "we need a complete lump of a central defender" than actually sign one. Interestingly most people seem to highlight what we need but don't say how we get it - for instance who do we sign in central defence? There's a few candidates out there and perhaps we've gone for them but it hasn't come off? Perhaps the free agents available are the mercenary types we condemn Saga and Rasiak as being (and anyway do we really want unmotivated players on large wages hanging around)? Who knows? Unfortunately with the games coming thick and fast there's little time to actually coach the side now - it's about making the most of the little time available, improving fitness and hopefully confidence. And of course hoping we can get in the players that will improve the team. Before the start of the season we had people saying, "I'm just glad we have a club to support" and "it'll be tough but a midtable finish will do for me". Now however it's a critical time, I don't think it is yet. Apologies for rambling. I'm no apologist for Pardew - most of my family are Charlton fans and they hate him but it would seem that he does have a few excuses to draw upon at the moment. He did say that it would take time when he pointed out the teams deficiencies and as I recall most people applauded him saying he "was telling it like it is" - presumably that only lasts for 3 games into the season?
Mr X Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 I dont think many are suggesting Pardew out just commenting on his team selections and tactics although his track record at Charlton was not very good Other clubs seem to change their manager to good affect with respect to results but not us which is very disappointing http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=422960&postcount=205 Who is keyser soze? Leicestersaint Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 Well we have heard the Corporal Jones don't panic call for the last five years - and look where that has got us! I am so far deeply unimpressed and very disappointed and i do not understand some of the team selections or tactics. So far so bad.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 19 August, 2009 Posted 19 August, 2009 Agreed - it's way too early to panic and I'm keeping the faith . Having said that the situation is pretty depressing to be honest and 3 points on Saturday would be very welcome and would go along way towards getting this points deficit 'monkey' off our backs .
david in sweden Posted 20 August, 2009 Posted 20 August, 2009 As hard as it may be. And to hose muppets who are already calling for APs head, **** off to stamford bridge or some other plastic football wonderland:mad: If you are a "nerd" for statistics (as I am ), you'd see that this is the biggest " make-over " the clubs playing staff has EVER undergone. It's going to take time to get the balance right, and I'm sure the -9 pts. is weighing on AP mind, too. So we have to give it time. Few people on this site have forecast promotion this season.(!)
positivepete Posted 20 August, 2009 Posted 20 August, 2009 My concern is also the manner in which we played on Tuesday. We created 3 clear scoring opportunities (Lambert 1 on 1, Patterson 1 on 1, Thomas free header) without any discernible pattern of play. Frankly we played a lot better under JP with the kids, at least you could see what they were doing and they tried to play football even if they lacked experience and made a few defensive errors. Compare the display at Reading last season with the one at Swindon Tuesday night! However, I like the first three signings he has made, they are all intelligent footballers, and if Hammond solves the CM issue, we then just need to sort out a CB and a wide player. So I am still backing AP to come up with the goods, I am sure he will have learned lessons from Tuesday, and especially from the last five minutes!
bungle Posted 20 August, 2009 Posted 20 August, 2009 (edited) It is difficult to know how to reply to this thread, especially as the vast majority of replies are really stupid. We lost over half our pre-season, our current manager had a little over 3 weeks with the side before the season AND had to have a look at the squad to see where we were weak, and what players we might need AND then see which players were left available to purchase AND then try and sign them AND remain within budget AND try and figure out who he should sell. Teams in admins for 3/4 of the summer, and who change manager 3 weeks before the season rarely (if ever) start well. We'd probably have started better with Wotte in charge, merely due to consitency, and the fact he probably had some transfer targets, but Pardew has to be judged in the long run. The most annoying thing at Swindon was that when a change was made, he brought on Saganowski, who is a pile of cr*p. But I can already see signs that Pardew knows what he has to do - he has signed a good striker, he has signed Hammond who appears to be the type of player we need in the middle of the park, and it is obvious he is looking for a centre-half. Until he has the time to address the weaknesses (some of which he won't have been able to spot until we played a competitve game), then it is unfair to judge. It is also very, very stupid to say he got the "tactics" wrong at Swindon. Most people on this board don't know a tactic other than the thicko British 4-4-2, and fail to appreciate there are other ways to play football. Edited 20 August, 2009 by bungle
Whitey Grandad Posted 20 August, 2009 Posted 20 August, 2009 Let's not panic yet, let's panic later. Halfway through next season perhaps.
SaintBobby Posted 20 August, 2009 Posted 20 August, 2009 I was there at Swindon and think it may be the worst Saints performance I've ever seen. But I'm not panicking yet. Not by a long way. I think we'e going to be cr@p for a little while yet. Lack of fitness, lack of cohesion, players who don't want to here, players with zero confidence. To be honest, if we show "relegation form" between now and Xmas, I wouldn't be surprised (i.e. about 25 points from our the first half of the season). If we're on +15 points by Christmas day, I'd expect us to survive comfortably. The second half of the season should see us showing promotion form (c. 2 points a game), which would leave us on about 61 points.
