Swindon 1 v Saints 0 Post-Match Reaction

I believe we need to raid a team for a centre back pairing , who already know each others game. We do not have the time to fanny about. There must be a pair of c/b's at a club that are competant and a club in need of money.

Swindon's centre back partnership were solid, physical, and bloody massive between them. We couldn't get hardly anything past them and they certainly stopped Lambert from working his goal scoring magic.

We need a proper midfield. Anyone who thought that last season's engine room could have been tuned up and provide a service in League one was very deluded. All four need replacing urgently. Oh well, one down, 3 to go and 12 days to get them.

Ah ha revenge!

Technically two down in the midfield stakes...

Hammond & Mellis (who would have been brought in for a reason)

Mind you, even when I played in Salisbury & District Div 7, I had enough time to "upset the CF" when the ball was pumped up to him from 60 yards away

But boy did I look slow when the ball was passed short to him......

"We looked nervous once we conceded the goal but we got better as the half went on and started to dominate.

"The second half I felt we kind of bossed the second half a little bit and we had some good chances and once you get the goal you think you can go on and win the game, that's how I see it but we just couldn't get the goal."

Think he was at a different game to me.

Despite the fairly positive feedback from Pardew, I thought we were totally ****e defensively and lacked any cutting edge up front.

So many players didn't perform and it was like slicing a knife through butter, each time Swindon attacked.

Kelvin saved us from another heavy defeat and there needs to be some serious words from Pardew to some of the players.

Olly was terrible and to be honest, so were the rest of them. Swindon were not a good side, depsite the talented wingers they had, I am staggered that we gave such an inept performance.

1 point from 9 says it all, it's not bad luck, it's just that we are not good enough. I expect thing's to improve dramatically or I fear we could get left behind.

As I said after the Millwall fiasco. 'Head Tennis' does not win games. Where was the 'on the floor' passing last night? AP really does have a very serious problem here. I'm not looking forward to yet another 'who can kick it the highest' match against Brentford on Saturday. Either try and play to feet or don't. Hoofing the ball forward achieves nothing. Watch some of the Prem teams and see how often 'head tennis' prevails. Come on AP. wake up and smell the coffee. He has to get this through to the inept shower that currently wear a Saints shirt.

And where was the width? On the floor to the wide players would have worked last night, but unfortunately, this just was not done. Down the middle almost every time.

The team is full of weak links from top to bottom, but this is where we need to start.

We need two centre halfs asap.

I'm hopeful that the lad we've signed from Colchester (their ex captain) will marshall the midfield and sort that out.

We also need a replacement for Rasiak who is too lazy to play alongside Ricky Lambert. Someone like an Ormerod or a Crouch.

A lot of our failures last night stemmed from 2 things:

The midfield formation and the lack of ball retention within it.

If Morgan is playing then he needs to be dropping deep to take 5 or 10 yard passes from the CB's and orchestrating play from there. This takes the pressure of the CB's having to try and play passes they aren't capable of.

Morgan is clearly capable of putting accurate balls into the channels and threading them into gaps for players to be running on to. There were a couple of isolated moments when him, Melis and Lallana put together some neat incisive moves which got the team moving forwards purposefully. Sadly, due to the players respective positions and our lack of possession these were extremely few and far between.

Last night we had Wotton playing in front of the CB's with Morgan ahead of him. This meant that when our defence had the ball it was just being lofted aimlessly either by Wotton, or the CB's in the general direction of the criminally isolated and tightly marked Lambert or Patterson.

There's no point having Morgan in the team if he's being by passed by the play, and there's no point walloping balls to a centre forward if he has no support.

The problem with Wotton is that he's now become painfully slow. Injuries and age have caught up with him to the point that he now doesn't often get near enough to a player to get in a decent challenge, or even a foul! I lost count of the number of times he desperately tried to keep up with a player last night but couldn't. It's not that he doesn't know what to do, just that he's no longer able. If he can't fly into tackles and win possession there's no point playing him.

This lack of speed also impacts on his passing as due to his lack of pace he often finds himself in situations where he ends up with no option but to wallop it aimlessly.

As far as I'm concerned midfield is the major problem in the team. Yes, we need another strong centre back but they and the whole team will be helped a properly functioning midfield.

Last night both full backs were isolated and worried about getting forward and helping the attacks due to the fact they had no confidence a midfielder (be it a winger or central) could cover. We need to get more crosses in to Lambert. In fact when we did get a few decent ones in Swindon were clearly panicking.

I've never known a team so short of confidence. We've carried the mentality & mind-set over from last season. We are literally toothless - no bite or edge whatsoever.

Did you see us last season??

Pardew signings bedded in, we'll be fine. As they used to say in Dad's Army - "Don't Panic!".

Actually, Ormerod would be a good shout in this Division - is he still getting a game for Preston?

AP, Saturday is a must must must must win, if we don't win then it'll be, to me, the biggest let down of all season.

No pressure.

Please

Dear A Pardew and players,

You don't have to worry too much about winning on Saturday now, my cousin was hoping for a win, but alas, the last Saints game he witnessed, via radio, was a 1-0 defeat.

Sleep well, another Saints fan at peace.

At last, someone who really understands football, keep it comng my friend.

First of all AP needs to sort out his tactics out, use the wings put crosses into the box and we'll get goals there is no daught in that. He needs to stop playing lallana (sad to say) he isnt a winger and i really cant see him fitting into a 442 formation. Ok looks like we got Hammond for sat to replace the useless wotton but we really need a new right mid with pace and able to beat defenders. Down the left he should play mills or holmes, even goborn wouldnt be a bad idea with his pace. He should also play a passing game, we played the passing game ok last season but because we didnt use the wings we didnt get the chances, too many ppl tell me we play too many long balls, this really doesnt suit us. It's all simple football which i dont understand he isnt doing...oh and 2 new CB's would be nice!

Great summing up. Pardew doesn't seem to be picking up on the problems at all. It is he who is insisting on playing so narrow, he who is playing no natural wingers, he who is telling the players to hoof it, he who is picking Wotten.

This isn't about 'time', it's about organisation, tactics and the correct guys picked. None of which Pardew is managing!

Oh boy, a slight over reaction by a few I suggest. 3 league games gone and looks like we are already doomed to relegation and as for Pardew why give him any more time to turn things around, let us just sack him now! :smt102

One of the more bizarre suggestions I have read on here and that is saying something.

Not surprised at all by the 1st three games but we have already signed Hammond and Trotman since the Swindon game to add to the signings of Harding, Lambert, Mellis and Murty so clearly I suggest Pardew is fully aware of our problems and is trying to sort them out within a very limited time scale.

Sorry to use cliches but Rome truly was not built in a day and even after the last 2 results and reading this thread ( which is actually downbeat even for this forum ) I'm still happier now than I was a few months back.

6 signings in 5 weeks is no mean effort and good players at that.We clearly need more width in the team and especially to provide the service for Lambert but that sort of problem takes time to sort out and that is one thing Pardew has not had.

Edit Oh and in many ways you could think that keeping Davis was effectively a new signing as I was certain he was going to leave, I wonder who/what made him change his mind ?
